Yeah, for me that was actually the highlight of the closing ceremony. Gave me the chills.

Also liked The Who at the end and a few other bits (Pinball Wizard, Wish You Were Here, I Am The Walrus covers, Brian May...).

Pinball Wizard is probably going to be the theme song of the paralympic games

this closing ceremony is stupid as hell. of course I might be a little biased because I just flipped the channel on the boy band part. still waiting for any DW or top Gear references.

He didn't sound brilliant I'll be honest. It wasn't classic 90s Oasis of course, his voice has gone a bit. Still one of the better performances imo, especially with the crowds singing along.

I haven't seen much of the closing ceremony, but what I have seen was rubbish. "A house in the middle of a street", followed by the Pet Shop Boys (seriously?) followed by some shitty boygroup shit no one cares about... I am disappoint!

Putting her feet up - the Mirror's cartoon was the best, with Her Majesty in a cannon, with the caption "So Mr. Bond is going to catch me, is he?"

Philistine! That was Our House, by Madness. One of the greatest songs, by one of the greatest ska bands of all time. Suggs was brilliant, though the sound mixing was poor, as you couldn't hear the horns over the rest of the band, but it may have sounded differently live.

Okay, I wasn't that much of a fan of either of those two, nor Russell Brand's cover shitstorm. I did like Bohemian Rhapsody and the bit with Freddy singing, before Brian May came in with the guitar solo. And the flower blooming to a phoenix and going out, I was nearly in tears at the end of it all.

I hate that song.

I turned off the TV after the shitty boygroup shit, because I already had enough of bad music. I feared it would get worse after that.

Each to his own, I guess.

Go online and search for video of it. They did it really well, with the cauldron blooming to a flower, from which the phoenix flew, before the bloom died.

I really hope that the copper pieces that made the cauldron all get auctioned off for charity - they would make a really strange looking water feature, or planter in someone's garden, or something similar indoors, for a conversation piece.

I believe there was 1 copper piece for every country that competed and that each country will receive one as a gift. That's what they said on the News here anyway.

For some reason, the Pet Shop Boys looked a bit like the Klu Klux Klan.

Overall, I really like the closing, didn't see all of it but I did see a lot of the good parts. The one part I didn't like other than those boy groups was the Imagine song. I love the Beatles and John Lennon's singing but I hate his fucking Socialist Idealism and "Imagine" is the epitome of his Idealist spewing. It's just a hippy sentiment from a long gone era for me, conflict is deeply imbued in the human nature, it will never die and neither will war. Getting rid of religion, unifying, none of that will stop conflict from rising, and then greater conflict, and then dividing and then more conflict. It will never end Lennon, ever. Leave that stuff to God and Heaven.

but you were atheist but hey, at least you know now.

Besides, world would be dead boring if there was no conflict anyways. People need something to feel passionate about, to fight for. Here's a song that's actually like a call out to "Imagine":

Thrice- Lullaby

Even as I walk through the shadow of the Valley of Death, I shall fear no Evil. Semper Fidelis

It's funny, because my folks actually watch this a few days after it happens when my dad tapes it. We didn't see the final live ceremony (well, live as in to the American audience) as we were too busy watching the Comedy Central roast of Roseanne. Speaking of which, I'm surprised no one's made a thread of that. I guess you can really "win" the Olympics, just get the most medals...with the USA did and an American did.

Oh, ok. That would be nice to reflect that it's giving something to everyone. Now to see if that works the world over.

Some shot put news - Belarussian, Nadzeya Ostapchuk has been stripped of her (yes, apparently she is a woman, who knew?) gold medal for testing positive for banned substance, metenolone, which is apparently a banned anabolic agent. All I know about that is it's a steroid, so she's out. New Zealander, Valerie Adams is promoted to the Gold medal in her stead.

It could have been worse - she could have tested positive for Methadone. Can you imagine that - a heroin junkie shot putter?
