And at the moment 6th in the women's quadruple sculls final.

Lets not get cocky like the Americans Chinny.

Aaaaand we're back, and GB have another gold with (Sir) Wiggins taking time trial gold. Nailed on for sports personality of the year and a knighthood if he wasn't already, and as someone who has watched the tour for 15 years with not a sniff of British joy, one of my absolute sporting heroes. About time he got the recognition he deserved as a six time Olympic medalist before today (now 7 and the most any Brit has ever won, until Sir Chris Hoy matches him later this week...)

Not so fast 'Great' Britain!

I could have cheated by going with China an the U.S. although I have some HK roots which is in China so it counts. I'm more of a U.S. person so...yeah.

Also, damn.

Absolutely gutted for Kristen Thomas of GB in the gymnastic individual final today. If he just landed his vault he most likely would have gone on to get himself a medal.

Yes yes hooray for Bradley Wiggins (annoyed I didn't back him for sports personality of the year BEFORE todays race - that price has dropped dramatically I bet now!), but I now have a new favourite sport in gymnastic and I can't get over such a blow imo.

Anyone else hear about the 8 Chinese Badminton players getting the boot for intentionally tanking their games? Seriously, What the Fuck China? The Olympics is all about FAIR competition and athletes. Tanking matches to get into an easier bracket is an insult to everyone who watched the matches and yourselves. Shame Shame.

News Link

In other news, bravo to Wiggins for his win in Cycling Time Trials. When the US is weak in an area, my cheers go in such order USA=>England=>Mexico=>Who ever is more likely to win, if I'm still watching at all.

It was one Chinese team, two South Korean teams, and one Indonesian team tanking the team to avoid a top ranked Chinese team.

Learn to pay attention next time.

Shame, shame, shame HP.

Note to self: We have 2012 already. So it's the first gold in 24 years!

I was just discussing this with a friend: It seems that World Records -especially in swimming- completly lost their value. There where SO many records in the past few years that everybody stopped caring. So what if you saw Swimmer X swim a world record the other day? You can bet that this record is beaten in the next few weeks, or at least during the next big event like a World Cup, so it really doesn't matter.

Just take Long Jump as a "positive" example: Bob Beamon's record of 8,90m in 1968 is STILL olympic record, and I have seen Mike Powells world record jump back in 1991 live (as in: Live on television, not live in the stadium). That was big news back then, and this record is still unbeaten to this day! Now this is a world record I value much higher than any swimming record.

Anyway, another good day for the german team medals wise. 13 in total now, but only 3 gold medals. That means we are behind South and North Korea, since both countries have more gold medals, heh.

Also: Angelique Kerber beat Venus Williams. WOW! But Lisicki lost against Sharapova. I'm happy for Sharapova, but at the same time I feel sorry for Lisicki.

There were 2 Chinese players.. where do you all get this information from?! It was 4 players from South Korea two from Indonesia.

Anyway so glad that they've all been disqualified. Not trying to defend drug cheats but at least they do it to aid their performance. Trying to lose to get an advantage in the draw is insulting to the game and beyond insulting to the public who paid to see them play to the BEST of their ability. Right decision to boot them all out there.

Sorry, I'm just a bit annoyed about all this misinformed shitstorm the media are putting out over all this stuff. And in the case of his link, it wasn't even misinformed - just purely worded, so I can understand why he got the wrong end of the stick. What's bothering me more is how long the Chinese whispers (see what I did there) linger for days after the events. Get on with it and enjoy the rest of the events.

I'm with you here, I actually thought about insulting him.

It seems that whenever the Chinese wins a gold medal, all of a sudden it's "They can't have succeeded, they must be cheating, it's the only explanation!"

It's really lame and stupid as hell.

Granted, the whole thing might have started four years ago when the Chinese women gymnastic team were accused of being underaged.

Actually, I first heard it from CNN, 8 Chinese players booted, was the title of the discussion. Then the article seemed to confirm that. Sorry about the confusion, still though, Tanking ain't cool. Shame on the ones who did it then. Those players, more like the coaches who told them to do it, must feel mortified and rightfully so.

The problem was the 'round robin' system that event is using, which is open to cheating. But like people say, just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should.

Or something which basically says YOU SHOULDN'T DO SOMETHING NAUGHTY JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO.

Very unsporting and the worse story of these Olympics for me.

Sorry for the DP, but now for new I KNOW is factual, I just heard it on NBC, apparently, a cyclist (not an Olympian, from what I know), was struck by a bus carrying Olympic journalists. As far as I know, the Cyclist has was killed on impact (well, duh, he was it with a bus). This is a real shame though. But it's also what makes cycling in such a busy city so dangerous, so if you live in London and cycle often. Just watch out, there's simply too much traffic to be careless on a busy road.

Saying all this the football match between Japan and Honduras was equally as rigged this evening, both sides playing out a 0-0 draw to progress, but I would bet that they will go unpunished. Unsporting behaviour is acceptable in football, but not in other sports it seems. At least badminton officials have the integrity to disqualify them.

Okay maybe it is and they got what they deserved being booted out from the Olympics.

I can't wait for all the track events to start up (100m 200m, etc.) . I not much a fan for all the swimming and gymnastics that's been going on.

That's generally the problem with a round-robin format is that it opens itself to match tanking to get an easier opponent in the knockout rounds. Really, it's not much different than the NBA where bad teams tank games {intentional or not is up for debate.} to get a better chance at the number 1 pick, or get a certain playoff spot to get a favorable matchup, a la Memphis Grizzles 2 years ago against the Spurs. The logical solution is to go to a single-elimination format like they do with the NFL playoffs and March Madness.

While it may not be illegal, I don't think it makes any sense at all tanking a game in the Olympics, not while the whole world is watching.

I can't wait for all the track events to start up (100m 200m, etc.) . I not much a fan for all the swimming and gymnastics that's been going on.

I might take a gander at the track events, because I don't think that anyone can challenge the U.S. Basketball team with the probable gold-medal game against Spain. {if they get that far, that is.}

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

I really don't think that North Koreans are exiled from their country. North Koreans aren't allowed to travel anywhere (only to save them from the ugly capitalistic world, of course), so why should they be exiled if they didn't win a gold medal?

Also: Why did both "olympic channels" show gymnastics yesterday? I had to watch the table tennis finals on a live stream, which sucked a lot. Also: DAMN! I never knew you could hit the ball so fast! Sometimes I lost track of where the ball was... also, Ding Ning not only had to fight her opponent, but the referee as well. Apparantly she didn't throw the ball high enough when she served it. I learned that there's a rule: You have to throw the ball at least 16cm high. ZOMG!
Well, she had some discussions with the ref, asking why she called her services, then she went to the umpire to complain, which didn't help either. It just sucks if you can't concentrate on the game.

On CCTV, I've heard that the Chinese value Gold only; Silver and Bronze don't matter. Therefore, they view themselves as Champions of the Olympics since they're 1st on the rankings.

Not only do they have the most gold medals, they also have the most medals in total.

no wonder they called themselves China.

You know, I'm pretty sure they called themselves "Zhonghua".
