I usually hire people to do custom art and music for my games, so I'm all about original content :D

I have an idea: a Newgrounds equivalent of Wikimedia Commons. That is, we should have a repository where users can share original content that other users are allowed to use. Of course, we'll probably need a lot of mods to make sure that users don't upload copyrighted sutff, but I think it will benefit NG in the long run.

I do not think Tom his saying no more copyrighted content period, just if you want any spotlight on Newgrounds, you are going to have to be more original, because that puts a serious damper on "just for fun" projects, or new animators who always wanted to make a music video/parody.

Ever since I came to college, Newgrounds has been my source for music since more non-techno/DNB/trance stuff has gotten more popular.

However, I still find myself going for sound effects ripped from video games, movies, etc. I do not mean things like light sabers or DBZ Super Saiyan sounds, but punches, kicks, glass breaks, etc. because I did not have to pay, they are high quality, and I BELIEVE if they are not that distinct they are fine to use, unless I am mistaken?

I have seriously thought about buying royalty free sfx though...

The hell with mainstream music, I'll be an indie biatch from now on.

I'll just keep doing what I'm doing though, doesn't really effect me, since I never hardly ever make anything anymore.

We generally get the vibe that video game companies are cool with sprite movies - there isn't going to be a sprite movie crack-down unless it does become an issue, but at the same time, the bar for making front page with sprite movies is a lot higher than it used to be. Unlicensed photography is a much more pressing issue.

Even cover songs are problematic, unless the original composition has entered the public domain.

Good decision? I think NG's is the first collaboration website that going to discourage using copyrighted material.

There are some big-shot music groups or composers that totally dig fan material. Could it be possible to get featured if it had the approval from the band the content's music is based off of?

So, for example, if I were to pay tribute to Devin Townsend, I animated a music video to a Devin Townsend song. I email him, he emails back, likes it, totally gives permission for me to post it on Newgrounds. Could it be featured then?

So Tom, if we use copyrighted music, even if they are covers, we don't have any chance to get featured at all?

I can't ever understand why someone would want to take legal action against independent Flash artists just for using music. In fact, all it does is promote the song and increase awareness, which in turn leads to more sales. And here are a truckload of good examples just from my perspective alone:

This movie, which features Pink Maggit by Deftones, encouraged me to buy more Deftones albums after I really enjoyed hearing the full version of this song. I now own five of them, including Adrenaline, White Pony, Deftones, Saturday Night Wrist, and B Sides & Rarities. Would this have happened if I never heard Pink Maggit from this movie? Probably not. I didn't know squat about the band prior to this movie.

And then there's this movie, which features First Breath After Coma by Explosions in the Sky. Thanks to this movie, I brought four of their albums, which includes How Strange, Innocence, The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever, and All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. Would this have happened if I never heard First Breath After Coma from this movie? Not a chance.

Thanks to taking part in this collab, I went out and brought three of Distrubed's albums, including The Sickness, Believe, and Ten Thousand Fists. Again, I probably wouldn't have come across this band if it weren't for this collab.

Case in point, I'm all for promoting original material and flash artists using Audio Portal submissions, but I think its downright stupid for anyone to press legal charges for the use of copyrighted music when there's absolutely no intention to make money off of it. These are just three cases where the use of copyrighted music actually HELPED the band promote the music and increase sales that ordinarily wouldn't have happened. Seriously, what the hell is the big deal?

Still though, if this is the way its gotta be, then that's a real shame. Nobody wins. Not the flash artists, and neither the music artists who are missing out on gaining future fans and future album sales from awareness-creating flash movies.

Don't pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men.

Did something happen? Also, what about things already in the public domain, or under creative commons licenses?

I used to be relevant.

I take it Newgrounds has gotten into a spot of bother over copyrighted material? It's a shame if that is the case but I suppose that is the world we live in.

At least if it encourages more users to use audio from the portal here and stop with the annoying overly done and rarely funny sprites then that's a bonus.

Just a bit of a shame because one of my favourite Collections is 'Music Videos', and it was actually this flash here which got me into Newgrounds in the first place. If it wasn't for Auf Achse then I likely wouldn't be on here now.

And although I don't animate I always thought that if I would it would be me attempting to create a 'music video'.

Will these flash disappear from Newgrounds? I certainly hope not, but if its a legal issue then what can you do.

:(

Download that pixel tool and draw them yourselves. Not that hard, you've got no excuse.

great, instead of sonic the hedgehog movies we'll get custom sonic the hedgehog movies. which is even worse.

lol such is the way of the righteous.

it wasn't the fact that he didn't have a condom, but the fact that it broke and he went ahead and fucked her when she didn't want to have unprotected sex. it really doesn't even fucking matter, because either way the media is just calling it straight up "rape" which is the most disingenuous manipulative bullshit ever. it's like they want him for stealing a tootsie pop but then turn around and tell the media to go ahead and report it as grand theft auto of a bhudda statue as well as holding a high-profile figure in custody through the phantom hand of the US government on trumped up charges in a misguided attempt to stop damaging truths that the public has every right to know from coming out.

Smooooooth moooooove.

My question is, if copyright is such a big issue, why doesn't Youtube have any issues?

Youtube is the epitome of copyright infringement and theft....
