The new layout is fantastic. I didn't have any trouble finding anything, but I did notice a few glitches naturally.
I was hoping playlists would have been added to the audio portal, but there's always next time.

I MISS OLD NG! I agree with the post above on the level icons. Now there all small and lame. I think flash descriptions would be good too because getting a LITTLE bit of info of what something is gonna be about is useful. One thing I HATE about the new redesign. THE LOGO IS GONE. I mean, yeah, the name and tank are there but the classic old yellow lights and black building are gone... I mean Really? That was like the basis for Newgrounds, it was the color and was in all the backs of the now-gone level icons.
There needs to be a "Classic" option on the main page for people that liked the older version better.
New design is alright looking but I loved the older look and i always will...

Images, sound bites, bits of code, etc. I understand that there's the ability to do those things already, with the PM system and DumpingGrounds, but I'd be much more streamlined if it was ALL in the projects page.
Is that feasible?
You know what? I'm an imbecile. I just found the fileshare thing in Projects. So ignore part two of my request. But I'd still like a multi-person communication option.
At 4 hours ago, Luwano wrote: I also have a suggestion. When a thread in the BBS has multiple pages the numbers below show like "1 2 3 4....251... 489". But many times you will want to check the second or third to last page, e.g when you have been away or the thread just reached the next page. So it would be better if it would show like "1 2 3 4... 251... 487 488 489". I think basically like it was before. I know it's just one more click to get to the desired page, but still.
Yeah... I agree with this! Things are moving pretty quick around here. I leave for a bit then check back only to find 1-4 more pages added (on this thread and others) ...would be nice to have more than the last page showing at the end, like Luw said!
Please and thank you!
dude what happened with the audio player!? i remember that not matter what happens it always keeps the song playing normally now it loops the same microsec if my PC gets slow a little bit please fix this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >^<
Whoever complains about movies and games being separated should remember when the TIME magazine listed NG as one of the top 50 websites and focused solely on games. It was a bit disappointing, wasn't it? (even though it was great that the site was on that list in the first place, of course)
Congratulations with the new design!
I was a little sceptic at first. Usually it takes a lot of getting used to when your favourite sites get a new design, but its been completely painless to navigate, very user friendly. Which means newcomers will feel the same way.
Tom, I've read a bunch of suggestions to add descriptions and titles to the front pagers, which I agree with too, is that a possibility?
At A few seconds ago, COOPERsPLANET wrote: Tom, I've read a bunch of suggestions to add descriptions and titles to the front pagers, which I agree with too, is that a possibility?
Reading this, I agree. It beats having to scroll over to get the title, description on mouseover would be good though.
I'm sure someone has mentioned these things, but here's my two cents.
Does everything need a glossy filter on it? It looks like a bag of hard candy and glass. There's also a lot of textures and photoshop layers on everything. Maybe tone it down a bit. This site has a lot of navigation and a lot of content and pages to go through, so visually, it's kinda busy.
I like the color changing depending on the page. I like the background art. I think the level icons are awesome and different and just take some getting used to. I like how the icons are organized on the front page.
In fact, if you are considering any visual changes at this point, a good example would be all the icons up top by the username. I love the simple patterns and mouse over highlights, good design, and the iconic color scheme. Also things like the arrow buttons on the featured content.
Of course, this all may just be shock of the new and I'm just talking out my ass. It was a big step and I'm just critiquing it because it was a bold move and I feel like you guys are looking for some feed back. I miss the portal chicken banner.
I absolutely love this redesign. It looks so much better, and I am already flipping out on the improved functionality (despite the hiccups when it launched).
The only thing I was really hoping for was that the audio portal be split between "Voice Acting" and "Music" in the same way the Flash portal was split between "Movies" and "Games"
Is there any way at all to make this happen? Not having it wouldn't be the end of the world, but holy shit it'd be nice.
Firs I'd like to give you the congratulations for the redesign, I've been a member since 2007 and the site looks amazing. not that I didn't like the previous looks but the new looks and functions are really something special.
But there is an important feature missing, on the previous version whenever we hovered the mouse arrow over a submission in the portal page we'd get a small box with basic information like file size, age rating, submission icon and author's name, now we just get the age ratting instead.
This was extremely useful for not only knowing beforehand how big the files are but also to know who is the author behind it, for example we could see if certain submissions are from well known artists like Egoraptor or from spammers like the remnants from Kitty Krew & other crews, this saves a lot of time for users because we know which submissions we should avoid and which are a safe bet for entertainment before we have to load the page in a new tab or window, of course this is mostly used by users that are already used to the portal.
Also I'd like that the basic community stats would also return to their traditional form or having that options to be enabled beneath the user picture and info as it is easier for us to track our own progress by just checking the basic information in our user page instead of having to jump to the dedicated stats just to see for example who many saves or blams you got today or how many exp points and the user rank and level icons.
Of course this is mostly for users who care about having those visible (like my case).
Thanks for your time.
I'm not going to look through tons of pages for the answer, but is there a way we can see the list of level icons like before. I'm sure they've been revamped and would like to see the new list.
I am kind of sad there was a redesign though, I signed up in 2008 and always went on the site before then and it hasn't changed since, but now its all different...
This is so awesome! The new portal layout, to the new icons, and a separate portal for games and movies! It's about time! The navigation however, seems a little weird at first and a bit daunting, but I guess I'll just have to get used to it. Redesign was definitely worth the wait.
"If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite."
The artist's name should be next to the submission's name so that we can see who made it without having to scroll down. Other than that... GREAT :)
You can't know what you don't know if you can only use yourself as a reference point.
The badgers? Nuuuuuuu D:

BUT in summary - a lot of people are panicking like this is the end-all, when it's really a humble begin-all. it's by no means perfect OR finished
Yeah but I think that a lot of the stuff you're kind of defending with "I like it just fine" and "what about new people?"
Yeah I can see how "portal" might be construed as vague, but it's also a brand for Newgrounds. One of the things that this update really seems to neglect is the community aspect of newgrounds which, I might add, is one of the things that really causes regulars to stay here for years and years.
So when you suddenly have a whole bunch of partitioned off "more sectiony" areas and all that, it kind of detracts from that community aspect that was there before. When you remove things like the Portal, it's basically kind of giving the cold shoulder to folks who liked something about newgrounds in favor of the people who don't.
Yeah I get some things like Turd of the Week being phased out. Yeah I'm okay with there being new styles to things and all that, but I feel like a lot of it doesn't really make sense and, when that's pointed out, is kind of just dismissed as "oh that's just because it's new and you're stuck in your ways".
I don't think that's necessarily particularly fair. Do you really think it's sentimental attachment that makes me prefer labeled buttons and text links over the envelope, the bucket, the thing with the P on it, the cog, the star, and the power switch? Yeah, I will get used to that, it won't be a problem for me after a while, but the fact that it's not apparent and intuitive right now means it won't be for people who are new to the site either, so shouldn't that merit some consideration?
it's actually EASIER to find porn now, i been jacking all day sonnn
No wonder this took so long a-hor-hor-hor
because nobody reads descriptions
I do so!
those who say they do are full of shit.
I READ LOTS OF STUFF DON'T TELL ME I DON'T I'LL KILL YOU HOMES I'M FROM THE STREETS BITCH
No but really, I do read it. Or did, I should say >:|
we live in an ADD driven society
I have ADD and I still read stuff. Like, I'd be working on flash right now, but I got distracted and been reading your stuff. I read stuff.
99% of the world clicks first and asks questions later. NO I DIDN'T RESEARCH but come on - the old way was nothing more than peripheral clutter.
No, it wasn't. I guarantee you that the text often determined whether or not I clicked at all, and if this thread is any indication I'm not the only one.
the limited descriptions for movies and games are bullshit either way - i don't see how "MR. FART GOES TO THE MALL AND FARTS" or "CAN U DEFEND PLANET EARTH FROM THE ALIEN?" has any relevance.
...which is why it doesn't matter to you. To those of us who don't want to click "UNDRESS WADE AND WIN A FREE IPOD" but do want to click "UNDRESS TOM AND WIN A FREE WACOM TABLET" it matters plenty!
this is opinion, not something that needs to be addressedAt 19 hours ago, PoopyMcButt wrote: I don't care for the background art, i'd prefer something basic tbh.
You talk about how a lot of things are done to reduce visual clutter, but that BG image is nothing but noise. Isn't it fair to say you'd rather have the option not to have it?
it's funny how the people we kept the classic portal around for are the only ones bitching about it.
So wait you seriously considered getting rid of it?"
it's not in the main nav, no - but it's still up there TWICE, and you can access it just as fast as you could on the previous design (half a second slower when you consider the hover) BUT IT'S STILL ONE CLICK, SO THE ARGUMENT IS POINTLESS
No, it isn't.
Having two drop down menus with redundant links when you scroll to the bottom is not as good as one button lead you to everything you want to see. If anything, it should have been a content portal button with a "movies" and "games" sort function, which would have been way simpler to do anyway.
Or, here's a shocking idea, if one wanted to have a separate games and movies thing, why not just have the portal have separate columns for those things? You might have had to have the featured stuff at the top of the page instead of middle columns, but really all the better for getting exposure to good stuff, right?
either way lemme ask you - as a content creator, which one of the following do you feel would bring your production more traffic, from a general, global audience?
I think this promotes the false dichotomy that your way is necessarily one and my way is necessarily the other, and I don't agree.
that would just further confuse people and clutter the nav
I really think this way of doing things is more cluttered and more confusing, and in fact that's my main beef with it.
p.s. fuck josh bend, he drinks pee for breakfast

and you know - a lot of game makers get pissy when they're beat out by a porno cartoon on the same day.
Yeah better they get beat out by a porn game instead...?
Like I said, you could have them in different columns, you could have an award for "Featured movie" and "Featured game" but that doesn't mean that the additional clutter, navigational complication, and separating the groups like that makes more sense somehow.
And, speaking of switching pages, a separate page for submissions that are under judgment seems superfluous as well.Again, more clicking that could be avoided.i am a little on the fence about how we handle this
Oooh ooh! I have an idea! Pick me pick meeeeeeeeee
So for starts, the top navigation bar. It's called mystery meat navigation, and it's a bad idea. Yes I know Google did it, but one of the things we all liked about Google was the simple hyperlink-based navigation. Google fucked up doing this, I'd urge you not to make the same mistake.i don't understand the correlation between our nav and google's...honestly, elaborate
I'm talking about the nav thing at the VERY top next to your name, where it's tiny little symbols with no titles and you have to hover over each one to see what it does. I wasn't referring to the main nav menus, though having one-click visually apparent nav is better in my book than a bunch of menus you have to hover to see if it leads where you want to go.
Obviously on that second point comes the design debate of whether or not "more sectiony" is "more gooder", and you already know my position on that.
Man, regular or not...you cannot deny that the old site was a patchwork of broken features and crappy bullshit with duct tape slapped all over it. YOU CANNOT.
Hey I don't know from a coding perspective, my knowledge in that regard is negligible, but from a useability perspective a lot of it was quite intuitive, and in this redesign was made less so. Editing your profile, submitting content, seeing all the games and movies and collections...all of these things were visually apparent without having to hover over an ambiguous symbol or scroll through menus or click through multiple pages, and there was nothing wrong with that.
In fact, you talk about it all being that I'm just used to the other stuff...well remember, you've been working on this for a while, you're used to this. We're not, we're saying it's unintuitive because we're not finding it to be intuitive on our first impression. Maybe that's worth thinking about.
man fuck strawberry clock, that nagga can B my nuts

Looks more modern too.

I love how my IE browser cuts off the comments by restricting them to their tiny boxes if they are too long and rant-like.
And yeah, I know, who uses IE anymore?
One glaring thing I noticed is that I can't change my icon/user picture at the moment. I don't know how long that'll last, but it is a minor inconvenience.
