money is just a means for trade, which is a good thing.

That's besides the point. When money becomes priority, it no longer gives relevance to quality, which is a bad thing.

either way, we'll all keep coming back, ive been coming back for 6 years.
you're selling your own merch, making awesome movies AND games.
what about making a feature length movie with top newgrounders and having it played in cinemas.
it would be good to see less adds.
but it would be sad to see newgrounds change in any little way to suit a VC (april fools 2006 and 2009 lol)

money is a value we personally give it. when you become overly prioritized by ANY object your in the wrong. money is not at fault.

What you don't understand is there are other things more valuable than money. If you take money as priority, you will hurt quality and effort. You either putt your effort in making quality, or give importance to money so you end up producing garbage while smaller people suffer.

Money is just a flawed trading system, not a dream builder.

you missed my point. i'm saying that money is a means by which we give value to objects so we dont have to trade wanted objects directly. its a very good trading system, and i dont see your problem with it. making objects cheaper does just that: lowers the dollar worth of the object. thats why people either search for quality or quantity of lesser quality objects.

its the same idea of trade that has been around since bartering was outshined by international trade.

and no. money IS a value, its not VALUABLE. currency is a label of what something is worth in that medium.

You can't leave NG behind right Tom? I remember your talks on interview at PAX.

You said we can't be like Youtube. Can't betray your own statement right?

Newgrounds is special because it is what it is. Newgrounds is a webiste build from scratch, the BBS was build from scratch and you have a community that really cares about this site. And really Tom, do you really want to sell the website that made you what you are today and a website that you build the way you wanted it to be to some moron that doesn't know shit about flash games and flash movies? I don't think so... :P

At the same time, others like myself may consider you a sell out. I have been coming on this site for years and years now. It was fine before, it's fine now. I don't really see a need to branch out other than to make yourself more rich than you already are.

Don't be one of those who seek out more and more, be content with what you have (which is a great site, full of loyal users).

My two cents.

Stay the course. NG is known for not selling out... and it just feels downright shameful that damn near everyone in this topic is screaming "SELL OUT!!!!" I mean, is this not the type of attitude that unleashed artists like Lil Wayne upon the world? Come on guys...

Sorry for the double post.

But also Tom, why don't you all start worry about improving the site and fixing the bugs instead of whether or not you want to sell out?

I'm not sure how it could kill the site but beyond that it seems like it could be the answer to Newgrounds lack of publicity.

I also like the increased odds of getting paid online for animating a cartoon.

I'm a purist. If you take money, I'm using my tour of the Newgrounds offices (who gave $100 to the Newgrounds movie Kickstarter? This guy!) to flick your nose.

You have to understand that if your going to do this, your going to have to keep the investors happy, and that may mean doing some douche moves that we are not going to like. Are you prepared to sacrifice our trust for their money?

I personally don't like it, look what it did to EA and Activision. Don't want that to happen to you.

Take the money. NG is losing its relevance already in my opinion. The site became very impersonal after the update. Users are faceless and I think people will leave.

Your ideas are part of you
Carry them with you your whole life through
Never give those up if you're by yourself
Don't let the bastards grind you down

Principles, we've all got our own
Stand up for them and rightly so
Never give those up and never give in
Its part of your character, it comes from within

Never, never, never surrender!
No, no, no, no never give in!

I really liked NG as one of the last communities around that feel independant to me.

Ending up as a subordinate of some "big player" would be such a shame. In the light of the youngest series of crazy investments in web-business it sure urges one to try and grab some easy investor money. Especially since theres quite a chance that this bubble will burst in near future.
But investors want something back in the end and if they invest money here they might also gain power over the community and probably about stuff that will be uploaded here. Sure that's a worst case scenario, but what if a group invests here that also holds capital in facebook ? They might not like content that criticizes their other investment. Or if investors feel offended by certain types of content around here by certain users who make this site so special in my view. They couldn't exist on any other art hosting site I know since every site involved with high finance wants to be "clean" and nice and "family friendly" mass compliant etc. etc. for the sake of higher profits.

I don't like the thought of another community getting tangled up in the dependecies of the finance market.
