Greetings, nico1uk! I can't say whether or not you can join the club - that's IncurableGimp's department since he created it. I'm not even sure I'm part of the club, but I like posting here and I'll keep the posts coming until I run out of questions / tips or I'm kicked off. Have you worked with sprites before?

yeah ive made a couple basic animations with b and b sprites nothing to good just moving pictures really i started making a series with edited sprites but the first episode got blammed every time i re made it

Do you have any interest in learning to draw? If you do, the book I've used as my personal bible since I was about 7 is Cartoon Animation (about $8) by Preston Blair. It teaches you the very basics of drawing and animation. Though it specializes in cartoons, you can adapt the information for more realistic characters like Spider-man and such.
If you're interested in realistic-type heroes only, How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way (about $12) by Stan Lee and John Buscema (one of my major influences) is also pretty good. Where it teaches nothing about animation, it teaches you how to draw backgrounds in different perspectives, vehicles, props and how to set the mood of a scene visually.
The links I've furnished go to Amazon's listing of the books so you can read reviews and such. Though you may not find Blair's book at a Barnes & Noble, you'll most likely find the Marvel book. Thumb through it and see if it's for you. If you're looking to learn how to draw, I hope this info has helped. Cheers!

Please excuse my ignorance, I'm not very well versed in many video game titles - what does "b and b" stand for?
Now, why do you think your first episode keeps getting blammed? If the .SWF isn't too big, and if you don't mind, send it to me at my e-mail address (you can find it in my profile) and I'll see if I can give you some tips as to how you might not get blammed next time.

Thanks for sending along the preview! My three questions are:
1) Do you have any interesting fonts to make the logo look a bit more slick instead of drawing it freehand.
2) Do you have any animated sprites of B & B?
3) What was the series' script like?

3) What was the series' script like?

1)not sure thought it would look better that way
2)no they were the only sprites i could find
3)the seriesscript was that beavis had to get a disk that contained a virus to destroy the matrix and free all the humans and the system was throwing everything at him to try and stop him before he could get to the main frame computer and insert the virus

i think it didnt survive because i had to mess around with audio import settings to reduce file size and it sounded crappy new drounds wouldnt let me submitt animations over 2mb cuz i had 2 low scoring animations higher than that on ng already and to submit another would kill there bandwidth

At 6/27/03 10:55 AM, nico1uk wrote: 1)not sure thought it would look better that way

You should look through your fonts and see what you have. Clean fonts are far more impressive than hand drawn ones unless you have a talent for creating them. There are also free, downloadable fonts on the Internet. Run a search on one of the engines to find them.

2)no they were the only sprites i could find

Though I can't say anything about the sound since I didn't see the project, what might have also gotten you blammed is lack of animation. Tweening static objects isn't impressive and a lot of NG users find that cheap and boring - especially sprites since it seems a lot of people hate them almost as much as they hate stick figures. I don't mean that to sound harsh, just being honest. Do you have an art program where you can edit the sprites and add running legs and stuff like that to them? The frame-by-frame animated sprites will give you more of an edge. People seem to react better to that.

3)the seriesscript was that beavis had to get a disk that contained a virus to destroy the matrix and free all the humans and the system was throwing everything at him to try and stop him before he could get to the main frame computer and insert the virus

Though I've only seen three episodes of B&B, this doesn't sound like Beavis' character. If you're going to use already established characters in your Flash, people would expect that you stick to who they are. Beavis should have a motive more in line with his personality for wanting to destroy the matrix. Something like, "if he inserts the virus, he'll have unlimited access to porn" or "if he inserts the virus, he'll be able to access everyone's credit card numbers so he can buy whatever he wants". When he's successful in the end, he finds all he has access to is something like "Baby Animal Buddies" or "Grandmas Gone Wild!" Above all, a B&B script should be funny.
Hopefully this advice has helped when it comes time to create your next Flash toon. Cheers!

Well, if you ever need help with sprites, I'm sure there are a few people here who can help you, including myself. If you're looking for general help in Flash, check out the Flash Guild . No one's posted there for a few days cuz I guess no one's needed help, but there are a few folks over there who are willing to help as well, including me. Hell, if you want to ask me directly for tips and help, you already have my e-mail address so feel free to contact me. Best of luck with your new project!

I'm sure there are a million more sites out there that have sprites, but The Shyguy Kingdom was the first one I stumbled across and seems to have a TON of sprite sheets that are well laid out. For me, it's an excellent learning tool.

Alright, sorry to anyone who's been wanting to get into the Sprite Club, I've been totally busy and I thougt this thread died a long time ago. Anyones welcome to join, you might wanna check out the first page for requierments. I'm gonna try to answer a few questions.
First off, some good sprite sites are-

RPG Icons - animated sprites from popular RPG games, along with non-animated ones

Fireball20xl - loads of sprite sheets here, along with some sprite web comics

Also check out the shyguy kingdom, it's mentioned loads of times in this thread.

Be sure to e-mail if you want to join, and include your AIM or messenger name.Or if you have any questions...

On the first page you said we could also reply with the info so, without jamming up your e-mail box, I can be reached on MSN Messenger through DocMonster - at least I think I can ... I'm new to it.

I've been up all night watching TCM's salute to Ray Harryhausen so I figured I'd work on a sprite of my second favorite character in Marvel comics - The Punisher! My first fave is Conan. I made him look cartoony with a really BIG gun. I've included one with an outline to make him pop and other without.

Well, i have no video's to my name yet, but I don't want to start out like most n00bs do...with stick animation(i have nothing against sticks! i love them so!). So, I guess the healthy alternative would be sprites! I'm gonna need help as i learn to use flash (still a newbie! need to get the latest version too....) so, i guess I'll ask for help from time to time. So, sign me up!

You need to give me your e-mail to contact you on MSN messenger, not you sign in name. And you can e-mail me if you don't want it in the open, I have a lot of room in my inbox

I strongly recommend messing with sticks at first, just to get a feel for flash. I wouldn't submit anything and waste precious space unless it's something your really proud of. Practice, then perfection. I'm not claiming to be all that great at Flash, But I do know sprites and I'll be glad to help you. E-mail me.

I still have a bit more to learn in creating sprite art, but I don't think I'm too far off. Enjoy!

I saw tha thread, and man, those are awesome sprites. I still need a lot of practice at freehand like that, but thats some awesome art. Nice sizing too, it's realistic to the sprite world. Did you use a VG character for a model, or did you take certain parts from various sprites to make it? OR, did you take the most respectable option and do it COMPLETLY on your own? Brcause thats the most respectable kind of custom sprite...

Thanks for the kudos on my sprites! I wish I could say I created the A & P Bot sprites 100% on my own, but I'd be lying. Someone furnished the .GIF's of the bots, I brought them into Adobe Illustrator (AI) and recreated them as close as I could to the original images. I shrunk them down in AI using a Car Ranger sprite from The Shyguy Kingdom as a size ref. Once that was done, I cut and pasted the vectorized images into Adobe Photoshop (PS) making sure the Anti-Alias box was not checked. That gives me the blocky effect. Once THAT was done, I went in with the pencil tool to make corrections and touch them up. It sounds like a long process, but the more I practice, the faster I get.
The Doc Monster Labs characters that appear in my sig are my own and the first animated sprites I've created 100% from scratch as well as Marvel's Punisher sprite. I'm currently working on getting the kinks out of my sprites and I'm writing a script to showcase them on NG.

Greetings, Renegade51! I just checked out your sprite toon and it wasn't too shabby. My only crit would be to drop the font size, rework the dialogue into a shape that an elipse can fit comfortably around and add word balloons so the viewer can immediately know who's talking. Other than that, I thought it was pretty witty! "I pity the fool who's ... GREEN!" Nice touch up on the Mr. T character! Did you use a DBZ sprite for that?
Well, hopefully you'll be part of our club because there's ALWAYS room for another sprite enthusiast! I'm premature on this since IncurableGimp accepts / declines memberships, but WELCOME ABOARD!!!

I don't think using up NG's bandwidth on a legitimate club such as this one isn't such a big deal. I think it's when clubs like The Utterly Pointless Club rear their empty heads that bandwidth becomes an issue. I think it's great having this club on NG since there are people here who create Flash toons using sprites and may stumble across it looking for help, advice or membership.

That being said, I'm not opposed to a Yahoo! group so, if other people want to create a forum on Yahoo!, I'd certainly join, but I'd also try and keep this one alive for the folks I mentioned above.
