New York City Meet-up 2011 2010-10-27 21:00:44

Where: New York City, NY
When: Friday, February 25, 2011 - Sunday, February 27, 2011
What: This is the second annual NYC meet. This time we're going to do it in February instead of March because it's usually colder in February, and it's an unequivocal fact that February is the best month of the year.

Anyway, here's the meet itinerary, roughly. Depending on the feedback here, some parts of it may be subject to change:

February 25, 2011 (Day 1): This is going to be on a Friday when presumably everyone is done with work or school. I'll be right in front of the defunct ticket counters at the Main Concourse of Grand Central--the exact same spot we all were during the previous meet in March, starting at around 5 PM. I should be very easy to spot if you already know what I look like. From there, we can either go to the Museum of Sex for the second year in a row (admission fee: $14, plus another $1 for bag checks), eat, drink and/or just wander around for the evening. I'll try to be pretty flexible.

February 26, 2011 (Day 2): Saturday. If you are on a tight schedule and can only attend one day of the meet, try to make it this day. This is when most if not all of the big stuff will take place.

The initial meet point will be in front of the defunct ticket counters at Grand Central--same as above. Try to arrive between 10 AM to 11 AM if you can, or maybe even earlier than 10 if you like to get up early. I'll give everyone until about 1:30 PM to show up.

After it's clear that just about everyone that wanted to show up has shown up, we'll then proceed to take the 7 train to 33rd Street in Queens. Also, if you're not familiar with NYC mass transit, in March 2011, subway fares will be $2.50 a ride (pus an extra $1 surcharge if you're buying a new card as opposed to refilling an old one). After we get off, we will head towards the following address for about 3 hours or so of laser tag and maybe paintball (I'm going to reserve our spots about a week or two prior to the meet):

47-11 Van Dam Street
Long Island City, NY 11101

Afterwards we'll all settle to eat at a nearby diner (there are plenty of them in the area) and later, we'll all head to a karaoke bar. Exactly which one is still yet to be decided, but everyone will be informed of its location either on the meet day itself or shortly before (the latter would be my preference). Then after that's done, we'll all likely head over to a local bar for a good portion of the late night.

February 27, 2011 (Day 3): This will be the last official day of the meet. It'll be long or short depending on how many people actually show up. I'll be at the same initial meet point as the previous two days starting from around noon. We'll probably head downtown to hang out and do stuff. If you've never been to NYC before and want to see certain places and do certain things, this particular day would be the best for that.

Now, with that out of the way...

I'm going to try to stress this as much as I can: if you're attending this meet, make sure you're financially prepared. You are responsible for all of your own expenses. While it would be nice if I could pay for everyone's food, hotel rooms, drinks, public transportation, karaoke and those sorts of things, I just can't. In case you're wondering how much money you should bring...I'd say up to $60 or so for food (just to be on the safe side--I don't think most people will actually be spending that much), $16 for karaoke (since we'll be doing 2 hours again, and most karaoke bars in NYC charge around $8 per person per hour), about $10 or so for mass transit, and whatever the cost of your hotel is if you're not a local. If you plan on drinking, bring as much as you think you'll spend.

If you plan on showing up and don't have my cell phone number already, then PM me and ask for it. If you still have my number on your phones, my number is the same as it was last year. Also this time, my phone has texting enabled now. Last year, nobody could text me because I had an archaic phone with a lame plan, and now that's no longer the case.

All right, that's about it, so if you plan on going, say so...and shoot up any questions, comments or suggestions.

Im a maybe. Its a bit more out of the way than the meetups i usually attend and NYC is a rather obscure city to have a meetup i think.

NYC Paintball is pretty bad. Dark, turf is slippery and referee's/employees are morons for the most part. Also it smells at first bet you get used to it after a while :]

My peeps cannot go because it's too early for them, and they have classes in February.

My chances of going just dropped significantly.

A remote chance I may come, Bus fair from my college to NYC round trip is like $80.

My only problem is finance and the lack of general knowledge of where any of these locations are.

That's pretty much what Day 3 is for, but you also need to be specific on which places you'd like to see exactly, because I'm not a mind reader.

Depends on what you want to shop for. Most of the stuff you want to see is in Downtown and Midtown Manhattan. There's a lot of good stuff in the outer boroughs too, but I guess we'll only go as time permits.

Not a chance. Heat makes me prone to seizures and general discomfort in both my eyes and skin. I'm pretty sure there are many other people with similar problems.

I too am a big fan of summer. However, I find that late spring, or early fall, to have the ideal temperatures for everything - The temps at the Toronto meet were just right.

Put me down as a 'maybe'. I'm sure a few people are pleased to see me posting here :D

However, February makes this meet almost impossible for me. I'll be starting school in January and most likely won't be able to go then. I won't rule myself out just yet, though.

Really want to go to this one, however too far. Just got a job and I need to save my money carefully. I'm not near prepared to go to NYC meet.

toronto Meet was alright however this one is still too far.

Sorry can't go to this one.

At 10/28/10 06:56 PM, DannyJay wrote: well, I think Gory would agree with me that Top of the Rock (rockefeller center) is way better than empire state building, because it's less crowded, you can actually see the empire state building, and its just as great of a view.

Top of the Rock is still pricey though, and just being there as a local would be awkward as hell, you know? NYC is rife with tourist traps and that's indeed one of the big ones. Just walking by Rockefeller Center on the ground and similar destinations should be good enough. The city's tourism industry as a whole already has more than enough money and they don't need any more from us. I'm sure most people here would rather spend their money on food or more important stuff, instead of paying to see panoramic views of Manhattan that millions of other people have already seen.

If anyone is interested in taking pictures of the Manhattan skyline from the ground level though...well, I've got nothing against that. I know some people will want to bring a bunch of pictures of NYC home. Personally, for good Manhattan skyline pictures, I would recommend taking them from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, the Staten Island Ferry, Gantry Park or Astoria Park (both in Queens), or even Wagner College in Grymes Hill, Staten Island if anyone wants to go that far out.

You have to organize a meet for what OTHER people want to do - not what you want to do..

If you have money to spend and really want to do it, then okay, you can do it. I'll take you there and simply wait downstairs. I would still strongly advise against it because the free alternatives I provided really are much much better and you shouldn't have to pay a hell of a lot of dough for breathtaking NYC photography.
