does imageshack do the same thing? it always seems to be the same size after it's uploaded. i noticed the 4-bajillion size exceedance as well when i tried to upload.
From Imageshack FAQ:
"Does ImageShack alter, compress, or watermark my files in any way?
For images and flash, absolutely not. ImageShack strives to be completely non-intrusive, which means that ImageShack will not alter your uploaded images or flash files in any way. ImageShack will not add watermarks to your image or flash files, nor will it compress the images or flash files that you upload (unless it is bigger than 1.5 megabytes or if you resized it yourself)."
I just registered there in hopes of finding somewhere that wouldn't compress the hell out of the image, so I guess as long as the file you upload is less than 1.5mb, it should be okay(?). I had to reduce the image quality slightly to retain the resolution within the file-size restrictions.
Also, I'm pretty annoyed with myself because I've just realised that I posted the RGB version of my image, and hadn't worked/converted to CMYK (for print). Hmm, thankfully the colours don't appear to look much different. The version I'll link to on my profile will be in CMYK.
