Flash Forward Jam 2022

We’re hosting our second Flash Forward Jam! This event celebrates the legacy of Flash while giving people cool new Flash games and interactive movies. It’s a sort of alternate timeline where Flash never had to die! Entries run in the browser, thanks to Ruffle. Check out last year's entries to get a feel for it!

Jam Requirements:

• Make a game or interactive movie with Flash. Interactive movies include animation collabs with cool menu systems, or something with decisions / alternate endings.

• Make it with ActionScript 2 and confirm it works via Ruffle before publishing. You will see a “Test with Ruffle” link on your preview page. Ruffle is what we use to run Flash on NG without the Flash plugin.

• Please avoid the use of copyrighted character and unlicensed commercial music. We love it when people work with artists from the Audio Portal and also manage an additional list of music resources.

• Publish on NG by end of day April 20th with the “Flash-Forward-2022” tag.

Note, if you want your work to run well on mobile, be sure your buttons have a large click space to capture finger taps.

Note Regarding the NG API for Medals and/or High Scores

Since the last Flash Forward, we updated the Project System to default to our HTML5 API (Newgrounds.io). If you go to the API page in your project, there's an "Advanced" link in the top right of the header bar. Click that and in the paragraph below there is text to "click here" to switch to the old Flash API. Do that and it should guide you through the rest. Flash API documentation is in the wiki.

Awesome! I'm up for providing art for anyone making something for the jam!

Unfortunately I won't be able to participate in this jam in any meaningful capacity like last year, for much the same reasons as before. Hopefully there'll be another one next year, or whenever AS3 support is rolled out! In any case, I'm pumped for the submissions this time around, especially given how last year's submissions were!

On a related note, for those of you who have game programming-related questions, feel free to drop by the game dev forum! Despite personally not using AS2 in awhile, I and quite a few others should be able to help you out regardless!

Additional Questions:

I just want to ask these in case I didn't follow them last year, especially as I mostly represent the Movie side of the Jam.

1- To be eligible for the 'Movie with Interactive Element Prize', do I have to submit in the Movie Portal? Last year I tried to be safe.

2- If I animate around an external source, ie. an animation based on an OneyPlays clip, or an animated music video, those kinds (examples provided). is that OK?

3- Can I make more than one submission?

It's good to see this becoming a tradition. I might tried to make an entry as soon if possible.

The NG just meant Newgrounds and not the @NG account, changed it to say Newgrounds.

It doesn't necessarily have to be in the Movies portal, if it's something where the player makes choices along the way that brand the story, they could fall under the games category. The emphasis is more on showcasing the interactive elements of Flash and doing things you can't do with an MP4 video.

That's ok if the source is something that grants permission to be used.

Ressureccion foe Flash?

I have a one question for you Tom. Since this year Flash Forward Jam one of the requirements is to avoid using copyrighted characters, does that also applies to Youtubers like Nice Peter and EpicLLOYD from Epic Rap Battles of History for an example? Because i was planning to make an Flash Game based around those series.

Kind-of. Altough i might used others songs that has similar vibe to their Rap Battles music somewhere in the Audio Portal instead of using their Actual songs.
