Glad to have you onboard! How can you be retired and a LCpl? They must have a different definition of retired in the British service. I think you're our first Englishman here!

I've been retired from service on medical grounds (official language).

It's what you would call a medical discharge, but we use technical language differently. Discharge is when the Army no longer wants/needs us and gives us honourable/dishonourable discharge. Retirement is through actual retirement or medical retirement.

To be honest, you really could just go to college then enlist afterwards.

When I signed up for the TA, my college education (which hadn't completed by that point) certainatly speed tracked me to promotion to L/Cpl.

It opened career doors as well, as I did horribly in the Mathematics section of the BARB test, but because I got gleeming results elsewhere and a college education I was allowed to join up as a Radio Operator despite failing the maths requirement.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours, but a college education is a massive boost. I'e seen guys literally slip in on the bare skin of their teeth for Section Commanders and Platoon Commanders Battle Courses thanks for their education.

Section/Platoon Commander Battle Courses are highly popular courses that are a requirement to achieve the ranks of Cpl and Sgt repesctivelly. They are always over subscribed with people interested in taking it and you really do have to stand out. Not sure what US Army/Marine Corps equivillents are.

I was just watching a documentary about the marines. It was really good, it was following a platoon through basic training while interjecting history and culture.

A few minutes in though, I found myself nervous and biting my fingernails almost to where they were bleeding. Does anyone else do this when being reminded of boot camp?

Not really. Boot camp wasn't that scary, it was just super hard work. We were too exhausted to be nervous/scared.

That said, the CSM was pretty scary when you got on his bad side. As with most S'ant Majors ;D

God. Damn. It.

It took from since October to now to get my mother to sign the permission for me to go, but I finally did it.

Signed up to be a 92G, which is a cook.

8000 NPSE bonus and 20,000 for college.

Doing my physical on Monday, then swearing in on Tuesday.

Hooah, god damn it.

Nah, shit didn't fall through unfortunately. My XO decided to kick it back for reasons of pending legal processes. He wants my ass and he's out for blood. He decidedly doesn't like me for a certain reason, which I won't discuss. Fortunately for me, he's the only one in my chain of command who doesn't like me, so most likely the legal crap will go away fairly soon. Really bummed out he decided to start this crap right when I applied for the deployment, got pre-approved and everything.

Fucking zeros. Stupid paper pushers with nothing better to do than to shit on everyone else because of power that gets to their head.

Be prepared to do plenty of polishing of boots and cleaning of uniforms post basic and infantry training. Household regiments are some of, if not the biggest disciplinarians in the British Armed Forces. You'll be doing plenty of formal stuff alongside your usual military training, unlike most other infantry regiments who don't have as gruelling a parade/guard duty cycle.

As the new 'bitch' chances are that you'll be doing plenty of the other lad's boots and brass too. It's a hard and fast learning curve, but get through it and you'll be standing pretty tall. Guards regiments might get stick in the forces, but they are national darlings to the public and get to see more heads of state etc.

Hey all! I've always been interested in the Military, and figure this is the best place to get some answers.

I am currently a freshman at my University. After I graduate, I wish to apply to OCS for the Marine Corps to become an officer.

However, this past December I was arrested for marijuana possession under 50 grams in NJ. I received a conditional discharge, which is probation for a year and than it is off my record. Will this destroy any chance of my goal for joining?

Thanks for any input!

I'm just browsing through C&C but 500 words is nothing.

Hmm, as far as being an officer, it's gonna be really hard to get past any sort of criminal stuff. I really don't know for sure, best bet is to just ask up front to a recruiter or something.

The military is basically just a job, where you have restrictions and stringent codes of conduct. There's many things you can do in the military.

Marines -> Usually the most disciplined, harshest conditions, best bragging rights.
Army-> Lots of jobs, lots of people, looser regulations, long tours.
Navy-> You're on a ship, doing jobs on ships. Except for Navy pilots and Seals.
Air Force-> Mostly intelligence jobs, satellites, missiles, homeland defense, etc. 1% pilots. Best conditions for living.
Coast Guard-> Half-military, mostly department of homeland security. Limited jobs. Bases only on the coasts.

That's my summary of it.

An officer in the reserves that has a profile which says he/she is a 13 year old female.

Hai! I'm Ghandi.

Never in the Army, no intentions to join, but I thought I'd pay my respects to all those who put their lives on the line fighting for the freedom of others. I had a family friend, who came to town whenever my cousin did, who was in Iraq. Sadly, he was hit by a roadside bomb while riding in a jeep and was killed. I though I'd lend my sympathies out to those of you who had lost comrades, close friends, or even family in war.

Ha not even close when it comes to the navy!

Lot's of marines get stationed on ships especially amphibious assault ships! As for the bragging rights... Well yes maybe we don't go as hardcore as the marines or army.. But You spend 3in a half months out to sea not seeing land in sight and tell me we don't have bragging rights. Shit sucks.

But no Navy does not only work on ships, We have plenty of shore commands for sailors too. For example of the following MOS's

Gunners Mate- If you're not on a ship and you have a shore command you're most likely working in the armory handleing weapons, explosives and other ordinances. Or perhaps running the armory it's self and getting people qualified from army to marines to other sailor on how to properly fire the m9 pistol, m16 assault rifle or m14 rifle. Along with many other weapons such as the M240 or 50 caliber machine gun

Or IC's who will handle communications just like you see in the airforce commercials and make sure everything is going A OK in the whole military and they work with satellite communications just as well as ET's also.

CS's well they're just cooks but they cook for the bases too not just on ship's.

MA's (Master at arms) Basically military police stand gate guard or watch high profile people when they are on base to make sure nothing happens to them and also escort them off base. They also have many MA's on the borders of mexico to make sure no idiot military members venture there cause be honest with yourself you're not going to mexico to to buy groceries you're going there to be stupid! Plus ma's are also Military police so be careful around them.

And me personally I love working on the ship. I am a gunners mate and am a 5 inch tech at that. I love learning that weapon the few times I've had the privleage to fire the weapon myself It feels like you could take on every nation and it's armys with that weapon.

Navy is bad ass. Plus all the ports you will pull into and they women you will see my friend. I've been to 6 differnt countries, Slept with a woman from each of those countries.

Navy is the best.
