I've finished my bot. PM'ing it now. And no, no previews =P
2 questions:
Is this bot war gonna become weekly/monthly, or is it to stay as some kind of yearly thing?
If there is a next one soon, you think we'll be more free to what we do in the next one? This one is fun, but it seems like shooting, dodging, moving and healing is all you're really coding =P.

Knowing when to do each, chosing who to attack, learning how the other bots 'think' prioritising, moving into good positions. If yours just shoots, dodges, moves & heals at set intervals then you're pretty screwed =)

I'm thinking someone will make a new one every now and again. Each on slightly different and each competiton made by someone else.

I quite like the team-based approach brought up multiple times in the topic. Maybe everyone makes 2 bots fighting together, which will allow more advanced strategies. Or maybe capture the flag, respawning after you die, king-of-the-hill, etc.
In February or March it would be fun to have a team battle. I think that we could easily do that.
Hi there!
Would the teams be made randomly, after the bots are finished. So that you can't make a specific strategy that both of you know, instead you would have to learn to cooperate based on stats, etc... Or would you allow us to know who we're with so that we can make specific strategies to use?

I like the idea of capture the flag.

I think it would be funner not knowing who you're teamed up with. That way you can't just go "Yeah, I'm with AB, I'll just sit in the corner and try not to die".
Alright, mine's emailed and all final. I didn't put everything in there that I wanted, but it abides by all the rules and does a bang-up job.
Demo-tests were against AuthorBlues' bot, because it seemed the most powerful:
1 v 1: http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/1364/defra gvxauthorbottd8.swf
1 v 3: http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/6568/1xdef ragvs3xauthorlc4.swf
Good luck to all bots!
Do you think we should also have API battles as well as AI battles? Sure AI battles are more fun to watch, shows a clear winner and tests how logical people think, but really it only tests a small field of AS.
We could have battles where we have to make API effects and stuff as well. That'd be cool.

Could you add me in there? :)
I want to see how long I survive
If anyone wants to have a battle PM me with a link to their bot fla and I'll PM you back with a swf link. =)

Do me! :D
Link above
my bot is done (it can beat 3 claxorbots sometimes... lols. It beats 1 most of the time.)

(no math.random used.. i made my own psuedo-random function)
say JMTB, i think it would be a better tournament if each bot was to compete 3 times a round instead of 1. We'd just have more rounds

Looks like the bar has been raised yet again.
Still, with so many contestants, I fancy my chances of kicking arse all over the field, maybe.
heh.
Re: tag team
I like the idea of one person having multiple bots, so allowing them the creativity of thinking of a strategy. I like how in this one, even though mine's coded really crappily I might still stand a chance if I keep working at it. I basically like the mix of creative and technical skill.
Maybe we could have 2v2, 3v3 or even 4v4, each team coming from one person. And maybe the matches should run twice, once from each 'end', if you see what I mean. And in the event of one win each, the number of bots remaining would be the tie-breaker, with the health remaining a tie-breaker after that.
Or maybe we could expand this further and have a proper Warhammer-style points system, with a set amount of points to 'spend' on your stats, and stuff like max health, max shots and max movement all costing points... I suppose working out a balanced point-cost for everything may be a headache, but it's just an idea...
I'd love to see this general concept go monthly or bi-monthly.
And if we introduce some sort of time limit (with a time-out resulting in a loss for everyone mebbe) then it may become an actual spectator 'event'. Just a thought.

I think the idea was to ensure identical results when the game was run multiple times. I was using getTimer() at one point, but thought I'd better change that, to avoid changes when framerate differs.

Your bot is a bloody crazy dude. And I didn't click the ads :)

If you look in his code it's half random, but it's going to end up the same each time. He's used trig and a constantly increasing variable to make it seem random when it isn't.
Also, Glaiel, is there a class to go with it or something? Because it just shoots straight up for me....
Either way Vengeance vs. Glaiel.

Glaiel pwned nothing :P
Make sure your victory code is set to there being one bot active and it being you. Or at least you not being dead.
Anyway, I'm going for the simpler approach. Thinking outside of the box by thinking inside of the box, so to speak.
The deadline should have been today as it was at first :(
I don't want to wait two more days for the tournament :(

SOME of us only saw this today >:(
you can count me in. I'ma try an abstract approach =P
...Damn, I was just going to let the problems with my bot be as they were, but suddenly I feel motivated to fix them. I'll resubmit closer to the deadline, and participate in a few more of these helpful 'demo battles'.
Lets make a quick tic-tac-toe comptition? :)
Anyone up for it?
