Have to agree, once again the refereeing ruined what was potentially a great game. It's been ridiculous in this tournament.

What a greasy bunch of bastards those Portugese are. I never really liked them before but now, wow.

This was a horrible game, I can't believe I bothered to watch the whole thing. Outside of the little spell of pressure the Dutch point on in the latter half of the first half, both teams were down right awful. The refreeing I dare say was even worse, but I can't really blame him for wanting to give some of those fags bookings, I mean there was a foul on almost every challenge for the ball.

This is a rare case of game where it is more of a shame that someone has to win.

All I can say is go England, since I hate the Portugese team completely. I mean Figo and Deco what a bunch of whiny wads, and that Ronaldo guy... grow some pubes and stop crying, FFS.

Me neither. I've wasted my afternoon and put stuff off so I could watch this game.
It was a complete disappointment.

Outside of the little spell of pressure the Dutch point on in the latter half of the first half, both teams were down right awful.

They managed somehow not to score, although I daresay their defence looked like it could have been 2 or 3-0 if Portugal had managed to capitalize on their chances. The shots were like 10-20 against Portugal though.

The refreeing I dare say was even worse, but I can't really blame him for wanting to give some of those fags bookings, I mean there was a foul on almost every challenge for the ball.

It was at the finish of the first half that I tried to convince myself to leave, but I couldn't.

It was like a train wreck. So much carnage and pain, but I still sat there and stared.

So many yellow cards and expulsions. I was really hoping for people to come down into the field and start fighting.

The next day Portugal declares war to Holand.

Portugal babies fighting over the ball.
I laughed my ass off when Cocu tackled the guy that wouldn't give him the ball.
There were 7 people from Portugal crying, I counted.

Wow, I like soccer and all but that game just reminded me how much of a pussy sport it really is.

First, Figo headbutts a guy who answered back with collapsing like he just got shot. Then Figo rolled around for an hour after getting a light slap on the face while a guy ran infront of him to get the ball. Then some other Portugese player played dead after getting pushed. You add that with the high amounts of players indulging in getting tripped every game and you have one big pussy fest.

Jesus.
And they wonder why North Americans don't like the sport. It made lol when to commentator said that is becoming violent... Pshh, has he never seen violance before?

He should watch a contact sport, he'd have a heart attack.

It’s all big words from the ppl supporting the Dutch but THEY started letting the match go in the wrong direction. When Boularouz got yellow for his dangerous play putting Ronaldo out of the game, he should have got red. And what about the first 2 tackles? For god sake with a rampant ref like that you know better and I say the same to Portugal. Everyone knows he’s a loose cannon, I knew this would be a disaster.

But my biggest disgust, that actually made me want to win the match for justice mostly is when the Dutch broke an age old tradition/ etiquette. Their player was down, the ball went of the game while we where attacking. When the game gets going, initially it looks like Portugal is getting the ball back and we where waiting…but no. the pass went to Heitinga who just took off with the ball leaving the Portuguese players glued to the field because they expected the ball. And that for me was absolute foul, just foul. I have seen losing teams with 5 minutes left to play give the ball back to the other team. It was a big disgrace that act of shit. Am I wrong?

After that hell broke loose and frustration and anger was all that was left. The referee went mad on Deco who took Heitinga out, red for the one who took down the Portuguese player when the game was halted etc. It just turned in to drama and I could not take it. It is awful to see a match like that when it’s your country playing.

The ref is so fucked, Blater said he deserved yellow. In the end both sides where screwed by a awful ref. The best image that illustrates that is when v Bronchorst goes to sit next to Deco after his red card. 3 red card receivers from 2 teams in a row, victims from something awful.

It was a super intense game and I am proud that Portugal actually stood through this all. And I’m glad that some luck was on her side, I thanked God a whole lot, oh yes.

This was a game never to forget, and I’m curious what the presses have to say about this. Next up England. What did I hear…Carlos Simon will be the reff…we are all fucked.

Jesus, people, both teams, not just Portugal, were completely and utterly disgraceful and that was amongst the worst games I've ever seen. BOTH teams were dishing out violence, Boulahrouz's stamping on Cristiano Ronaldo's thigh and Deco's violent lunge being perfect examples of that, and BOTH teams should, had the referee been in control, have ended up with 8 players each, tops. It was all ridiculous, violent and shameful.

But two incidents are particularly terrible, Figo's simulation of a foul taking out Boulahrouz and, most importantly, the Dutch refusing to give back possession (twice). The former is horrible enough as it is (and something that has to be stamped out of football), but the latter is something that I'd hoped I'd never see in football again. Shame on van Basten and all the Dutch players for letting that happen, shame!

All the greatness that the orange shirt has and all the great names, such as Cruijff, Gullit, Rijkaard, Rensenbrink... were instantly shamed by the players of that match. I'd rather see my team lose a match, any match, than lose my honour by doing that. The Dutch players on field don't deserve the right to wear the shirt worn by those great players.

I'm certainly not going to root for Portugal in the WC after this match because of their behavior, but neither will I root for the Dutch in the future in any competition (as I was doing so in this match), unless some sort of apology is made or the coach and players change.

And da_pope? If want violence, go see "Ultimate Fighting Championship", where's there's plenty of real violence, unlike, say, that fake violence of the WWE or the "limited" violence of American football and other "contact sports". My point: violence is a relative thing.

What a night. Next up is England and we’ll be missing Deco and maybe even Ronaldo. It will be super tough match because England has quality and experience. I hope we make it, if not: its life because beating the Dutch for me is victory.

I’m off to get 1 hour of sleep and then I fly away to…Portugal (heh). Won’t be visiting the internets until the world cup is long gone. So for the visitors in this topic: good luck! Congratulations to those who take the cup with them.

Cheers.

The US had no strong midfielders to even attempt to control or direct play. Donovan is the "best" the US has and I just don't like him. To my knowledge, he's never said or done anything wrong, I just never liked him from the first time I saw him. He didn't do anything right in the Cup either, so my opinion has not been improved. Even beyond him, the overall play was uninspired, slogging defense looking for a breakaway ... which works if you don't constantly fuck up your passes and fail on your offside traps 75% of the time. IMO most of he blame should go to Arena, for what they did, and FIFA's ranking system, for what was expected of them

A prediction that proved far too accurate ....

Germany is gonna win the world cup

They're actually playing like they want to win now. Much better than I expected, though I still don't see them progressing to the Final. Friday's match against Argentina should be one of the better of the tournament, no matter who wins. I'll be rooting for Deutschland, but I don't see them pulling it off with Lehman in front of the net.

At 6/24/06 05:05 PM, wismty wrote: I hate to admit it, but that was one hell of a goal....

Mexico is one of those teams that you look at and think that they deserve a top finish, if not actually winning the Cup. A goal like that though, dream shot ...

At 6/24/06 05:32 PM, pepeatumi wrote: And Argentina wins 2-1 and they'll face Germany in their next match.. But let's be honest both teams deserved to win this game they went out played a great game and left it all out on the field and it took one hell of a goal to decide the game. So props to Mexico for giving Argentina one hell of a battle and props to Argentina for winning what was a tough game for them.

Probably the best summation of what this is all supposed to be about, though I'd have to say that this is the toughest challenge since they faced Brazil in qualifying ... unlike the Portugal-Netherlands crap where they just picked up where they left off at the Euro 2004 brawl.

Why is everybody so optimistic about Germany? I didn't even think we'd get past the group stage (or what ever that's called in English).

Group Stage/Group Round/Group Phase ... all the same really. Save for Ecuador, we had a pretty weak group and odds were we'd make it out to the 16, but I don't see us making it past Argentina without some truly inspired play. Podu was great yesterday, but everyone will have to step it a notch or three to win.

At 6/25/06 04:55 PM, BananaBreadMuffin wrote: What a game. Oh well, England vs Portugal it is then. Our arch-rivals, no less.

Yeah, but after that brawl ... err game, Portugal is down two starters for at least 1 game and has half a dozen players carrying yellow. Didn't one of their guys catch a 4 match ban off a red as well? No telling if Ronaldo will be fit either. I won't say it will be a walk in the park, but the edge is definitely to England for Saturday's match.

This is the worst I've seen it. Robben going up for a header in the box and getting kicked in the shoulder and the ref making NO CALL was utterly ridiculous. With everything else that was getting carded, how was that not even a foul? Half of both teams should have been tossed for those altercations, but hopefully FIFA, UEFA, or both will at least follow up and hand out some sanctions and fines for it. Bad officiating only made things worse.

Not in the least. I gaped at the TV when I saw him make a run and finally managed to yell, "what the fuck do you think you're doing?" right before they tackled him. Quite frankly, he deserved that hit ... and the stern talking to that Portugal was giving him while he was on the ground.

The Holland players' reaction, pushing them away from him, was understandable, but they could have handled it soooo much better. Instead they earned a couple extra yellows while Deco got his second, and all because Heitinga decided to be a nitwit.

At 6/25/06 07:41 PM, SpongeMan wrote: Is the USA still playing or not?

Long gone. Czech Republic handed them their asses back in Group, and their best result was a 1-1 tie against Italy. They ramped up their play against Ghana but it was too little too late and still got beat, so now they are back in the States watching it on TV.

That Figo should be an actor, Khalid/Bron (I don't know which one) got sent off because he 'injured' Figo, fuck off. He just did a perfect tackle on the ball and stepped infront of them. Then Figo drops down saying he got hit in the forehead and then the coach comes up with icebags and stuff.

Why not? Control the ball, control the game.

´What I meant is that this stat can be quickly improved by one team just passing the ball around. It doesn't really speak of a team's quality. It can, but it often doesn't.

it took the bite out of the Ecuador attack.
What bite?
The bite that got them into the second round of the World Cup...?

I didn't see them have much bite in their last two games, so I wouldn't use it as an argument.

there were also many long periods during which they had complete control over the ball and the game.
Absolutely and totally no. You played crappy, nothing less.
Nope, I disagree. We played well enough to win.

Really though, you're just being an arse for the sake of it. You have nothing constructive to say about anything, all you do is slag players/team off.
That coming from a brit...lol
Meaning...? Have I slagged any of the other teams off? No.

Eheh, and then I checked your profile to find out which country you're from. That makes sense.
That's about the lamest thing you said.
Why? VirginLungs has gone out of his way to slate England at every possible opportunity in this thread. He's just taking an unnecessarily hostile and aggressive stance towards any comment on the English game. Kind of reminds me of the very things that England fans are constantly accused of.

You came to this world cup as the self-proclaimed winners, and the so-called best english team ever.
Don't tell me, you believe what you read in The Sun??? No-one in England believes that crap.

Come on, you're making this a bit too easy for yourself. I know that The Sun is crap, and I don't believe that they should be a measure for all the brits out there, but you can't seriously tell me that nobody else takes that stance. I've seen enough british fans, at the games, in forums and at the after-game parties who do. And well, when you guys go and celebrate the greatness of your team, you're in for other people telling you that it's not. It's true that arguments on both sides tend to get a little too heated, especially between our two countries (which I honestly consider a pity), but come on, it's not that bad either. I think it's rather fun (as long as it stays focused on football, which nowadays, it mostly does), so please don't take it personally.

So far, you've been very lucky you even passed the group stage. You have not played one good game at this world cup yet. Face it.
We haven't played to our full potential yet, but I'd say we've played well every time. Sure, our play isn't as scintillating as Argentina, but we get the job done, won our group, and are still in the tournament.

Yeah, we're just slinging arguments here ;-)

Quit with the resentment. I haven't slagged off Germany or Ireland, neither have the England fans on NG in general, so I don't know why people feel the need to jump on the 'slag England off' bandwagon every time they play a game.

What am I supposed to say? The 'slag Germany off' bandwagon has been rolling for 60 years, and you'll find a lot of England fans on it ;-).
Again, come on. I don't think there really is bandwagon, that's only for people who take it too seriously. A bit of slagging adds to the fun of it all, let's not make it worse than it is. If you really feel insulted, I'm sorry. Really.

Yeah, that's really become an issue in football. They should put up a website or something, where they show all those pussy maneuvres for what they really were. Or think up some ranking system, where players can be awarded pussy-points and then get banned when they accumulate too many... ;-)

I especially liked that dutch guy dropping dead after Figo touched him. In slow-mo you can perfectly see him wondering, then hatching a plan and finally dropping down.
