If you're planning on doing that, I'd wait and let one of us go through the topic and make a note of a few things that are regularly suggested (edit post etc.) and rejected to include in it. Just so the big ones are hit right off the bat and they've got no excuse whatsoever.

So if anyone plans on making a suggestion... you expect them to read 27 pages worth of posts before making their suggestion? I guess you're the boss.

I have some ideas for NG:
1)How about in "other submissions by this author" menu marking
submissions with a decent score, great sore and awarded submissionds?
2)How about showing blammed submissions in the public profile?
3)
ehh... i've forgot other...
So, what do you thinki posted this some time ago, but i was too lazy to post it at this topic =)

It would be good to have a more advanced search for posts by people, by topic, by date, and so forth.

I've always thought this. I'm sick of having to look through pages when I know who made the topic, and I think It would be so much easier if we could have something along the lines of Search for ____ posted by ______ on _______ The fields offcourse being optional.

Since pieoncar already went over the idea of having string search for within topics throughout the BBS, I'd like to point out that the current search just doesn't cut it. It is based entirely on the idea that everyone follows the rule of keeping a thread title related to the subject matter.

Yes, annoying as it is, people still won't follow the rules.

I think that in addition to adding text searches, we should be able to sort results by:
date [before, after, and on]

Agree

author

Agree

title relativity

I don't understand, how could we implement this?

locked or not locked

Agree

pieoncar's suggestion

Agree

poster level/status [above level, below level, or on level]

People level up, you know.

new posts since last view [or not]

Agree

results per page [just adjustable, not really necessary]

Agree

number of replies [less than, greater than, equal to]

Agree

All available to sort the information interchangably.

I'm not sure exactly how much bandwidth would have to be supplied to have such an advanced search, but it is more in tune with server power to search and sort things dynamically.

Do you even know what bandwidth is?

Try finding the topic for BBS screenshots and it may take you a while. That's because the topic is actually "BBS Screen Shots." It's these differences in semantics that really irk me. Another great example is my hour-long search recently for Wade's thread about modding Ron. Since the name had absolutely no relevance to the post, it didn't turn up in my searches and I had to narrow it down by crawling through Wade's posts and "Ctrl+F"ing every page within cronological distance to my estimated date. Very frustrating.

Hah, I've been there before.

Second idea:
Mod-Elves. Little regular users who are selected by the mods to be able to "suggest" administrative action on a user/thread. The user would be allowed to suggest mod action to a certain rule being broken or circumvented, and the request would be given to any mod or admin online/available by means of a nonobtrusive alert, such as a mod message box. Rules:
-The user can only do a certain number per day or something like that (to keep the mods from being flooded with requests)
-If the specific user or thread has already been marked that day, the request will not go through.
This would also eliminate the idea that lots of retards get that "No mods are online... I'm gonna post a hardcore porn/spam topic", which makes people like DrMoxley send emails to Wade demanding to be modded, etcetera.

We already have mod elves, and they're not useful.

There's also a rule against back seat modding.

I got an idea that could help fight against those damn portal spammers.

You know how some upload crap with a brilliant preloader so it gets past, then change it's name to hentai or something?

What if they added a restriction, so that you CAN'T change the name of the flash whilst it is on the 50 most recent list?

Makes sense, but would be annoying as hell.

The 50 most recent list is where people get the most Lime-Light for their flash. If it has a dumbass name where they've made a typo, then they're going to look stupid.

True, but if they didn't thoroughly check out the details before they submitted it's their fault, and tough luck... :P

Hi,
I like the spell checker idea, not just just in the forums but in the submission form too would be nice.

I am also in favour of the edit button, i do some stupid stuff sometimes, and preview still would save my butt (look at some of my slashdot postings)

I also like the [code] idea, it would be great in the flash and programming forums.

I didn't read this whole thread (its 24 pages long), but some of the ads on the front page are way too adult, they should only come up when a user is in the adult section (mature).

Also alien hominid is such a bright and colorful game, they should make some better shirts, and new shirts for NG too.

Oh, and I use the topic search in the forums, but I don't understand the algorithm because I cant seem to find what I want. And searching for three letter words would be nice e.g. If I wanted to do a search for just 3ds or CKY etc...

NG has been running great, its never laggy for me anymore and the overall look and fucntionailty is great. So keep up the good work.

liljim said no already. :\
"Spellchecker is a bad idea; too many resources, too much work. Use a dictionary."

It would be abused horribly, believe me.

You mean like BBcode? No, people should still use html.

This is true, but you can always download Firefox and then get the adblock extension

Also alien hominid is such a bright and colorful game, they should make some better shirts, and new shirts for NG too.

That's really sales and promotion, not ideas for improving the site.

It works by finding all the topics with the words you requested, and showing them in order of most recent by date, however this system doesn't work very well.

NG has been running great, its never laggy for me anymore and the overall look and fucntionailty is great. So keep up the good work.

Actually, those weird errors where the page isn't loading have been slowing down or maybe even stopping for me...

That's been said before. I'm not positive it was said in this topic, but either here and/or in pieoncar's thread topic (that began the NG Lister crackdown).

At 6/5/05 08:11 PM, BareNakedMike wrote: Im sorry James, I did look though some pages. I posted other times too on like the first 12 and I dont recall seeing about that, and i checked the last few links it showed, but i didnt really see anything. im sorry about that.

Relax, relax. liljim was only talking about deleting redundant POSTS, all it will hurt is your postcount by one, it's not like you'd get banned for making a duplicate suggestion (well, unless you started doing it multiple times in an obvious attempt to spam up this topic, of course).

At 6/6/05 05:17 PM, FrOzEn_FoX wrote: What if they added a restriction, so that you CAN'T change the name of the flash whilst it is on the 50 most recent list?

Not a bad idea. I'm not sure how easy it would be for liljim to make that restriction automatically switch off when a flash exits the 50 most recent list, but... an alternate method would simply be to enact a 24/36/whatever-hour no-title(/comments? /swf?)-changing restriction. Based upon the average amount of time it takes a protected submission to leave the list.

Not sure if that's worth it, either, but it would certainly prevent the TOTW campaigning (at least to the degree it now exists) due to people getting trolled into voting low due to title/comments changes.

Since I don't no much about programming I don't know if this is possible but here is my idea

In every section of the bbs like general, flash, audio, politics etc. There is like the top 5 posters of that section posted somewhere on the site. I just think that this is a pretty good simple idea to implant.

But I don't know if this is possible to do...

Plus it could turn negative because then a lot of spamming could a rise.

Quite right.

There have been lists that kept track of posts, and they were shut down because people spammed solely for the purpose of getting a high rank in a stat that matters least.

You aren't doing anything wrong, except downloading spyware. I don't think the platinum thing is actually working at the moment, and I hope it never will if it means I'll have to download some spyware.

An idea I have is an edit button.
I know I ain't the only one who has this problem cause at least nce a day I make a mistake and I hate double-posting but it woldn't be necessary if we had an edit button.

I'm locking this now, because:

1. despite repeated requests to keep on track of what's been going on in the thread, people keep making the same suggestions. The last post is the best example of that. How many times about the fucking edit button?

2. Denver sent me an e-mail earlier on today asking whether he should create another thread, (fresh), with suggestions that have been put forward and rejected for whatever reasons listed in the first post of the thread, so people have no excuse to make suggestions that have been put forward before.

For those of you who have this thread bookmarked, I'll make a closing post in this thread (after this one) with a link to the new thread, whenever it's made and that way you'll have an easy way to update your bookmarks if the new thread disappears off the forum listing quickly.
