They're very good, believe me, but they're not the best. Sure, they took what the Beatles left behind from Sgt. Pepper's and made the whole influence, but they're not the GREATEST.
Led Zepplin, any Hard Prog bands that sound like them?

Dopethrone signature by electric wizard? I Think that's fucking swell
I think you're fucking swell.
One time I asked for a signature with that picture but the person who tried to make it failed.

It has to be said that Sensey's dope related sig is well classier than yours :P.

Red, Larks Tongues in Aspic
Sure, they took what the Beatles left behind from Sgt. Pepper's and made the whole influence,
They did more than just follow the Beatles' direction. While I recognize Sgt. Peppers' importance in the establishment of progressive rock, I don't think KC has ever sounded much like them. Anyway, they made many masterpieces of albums and established their own unique style (more than once) and they left their own influence with the Greg Lake and John Wetton years and would be imitated by a number of bands in the years that followed. But really, all I care is that in the Court of the Crimson King, in the Wake of Poseidon, Red, and Larks Tongues in Aspic were some of the greatest progressive rock albums ever conceived. And Starless and Bible Black, Discipline, Thrak, and the Power to Believe are also excellent. And most of the others in between were good.
but they're not the GREATEST.
King Crimson is the one greatest band ever formed in history. ever.
ever.
in my opinion
Led Zepplin, any Hard Prog bands that sound like them?
They're not prog, but I love Led Zep. I have Led Zeppelin I, II, III, IV, Physical Graffiti, and Houses of the Holy. Listen to Deep Purple's albums Deep Purple in Rock, Machine Head, and Burn for some more amazing classic hard rock, and Fireball if you have time.

thanks. I love Electric Wizard, and stoner doom metal in general.
I think you're fucking swell.
aww :)

It's all opinions. Ya know? But thanks for recommending me that.
Yes.
- Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
- Yes
- Pink Floyd
- Dream Theater
- Liquid Tension Experiment
There's more, but I'm too sleepy to remember them all.
This topic needs more camel, an unfortunately under-rated band
Also, who doesn't like camels?

dey's good stuffs. I still don't have any of their albums.

Camel? I never heard of such a band.
I'll check them out later.
Going for the discography of The Doors and looking at Sweet.
So I guess almost all of you only listen to the very famous popular prog bands.

Yes.
O CWUTIDIDTHR!
At 10/20/09 02:37 PM, Nev wrote: Yes.
I just got fragile, speaking of which. not that I hadn't heard songs from it before, such as Roundabout, but I finally have the whole album. I'll probably get the Yes Album next, since it has Starship Trooper.
But like I was saying with the lack of slightly lesser known bands. You guys need some Transatlantic or Gong or Gentle Giant or Focus or something. or Camel, as the Rhino fellow said. look deeper, find hidden gems. be a....a....prog spelunker. yeah.
you ass-spelunker
Does anybody here listen to any math rock at all? Battles? Don Cab? Hella? perhaps recommend me some?
now listening to: Nektar - Desolation Valley

I'd recommend their first and second albums, the first being better. It all went a bit downhill from there though. Still a great band.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here listened to Pain of Salvation's album 'BE'. If so, what do you yhink the storyline is about?

I know of Focus, though I've only heard Hocus Pocus.

You know I like Battles. And I still need to check out Don's other work.
The only others I know of are Behold... the Arcopus and SikTh.

I'm sure I'll get some of their albums eventually. I dig 'em.

I haven't heard that one. I only have One Hour by the Concrete Lake, which I only got because of New Year's Eve since it's one of my favorite songs ever. Whenever I hear it, I sing along and make a gay sort of emotional squinty face. must be a sad sight.
TUUURNING MIRRORS UPSIIIIIDE DOOOOOWN WON'T MAKE DUST FALL OOOOOOFF THE GROOOOOUND

It's another concept album? neat.

Yeah, they're pretty much a one hit wonder as far as their fame. That's not their only good song, though I do love it. Live versions are better than the studio version. usually faster and more energetic and cooky. I have a live video of them playing Hocus Pocus from '73 on my Zune. so awesome. Thjis is a wonderful psycho.
You know I like Battles. And I still need to check out Don's other work.
Don Cab is crazy sextastic, at least they were when Ian Williams was still with them.
The only others I know of are Behold...
technical prog metals.
At 10/20/09 07:15 PM, Sense-Offender wrote:The only others I know of are Behold...technical prog metals.
A dunno man. They (or they did) write their albums and then have to spend months learning how to play what they've scored. Surely thats a Mathy way of songwriting?
At 10/20/09 09:56 PM, Sense-Offender wrote: Wasn't Spastic Ink the same way? no?
I've never read anything to do with Spastic so I don't know.
I wouldn't put it past someone like Jarzombek though, but I don't think you can hear that type of songwriting in their music. It sounds a lot more conventional.
I just realised that I never posted a list of bands I like so . . .
Yes
Pink Floyd
Tool
Symphony X
Pain of Salvation
Andromeda
Camel
Circus Maximus
Dream Theatre
And a few others.
At 10/20/09 09:56 PM, Sense-Offender wrote: Wasn't Spastic Ink the same way? no?
They are very different. It's pretty rare that you find basic rythms in Behold... The Arctopus.
At 10/19/09 08:54 PM, Sense-Offender wrote: So I guess almost all of you only listen to the very famous popular prog bands.
Show me a good prog band and I'll listen to them. It's just hard finding them.

1) I confused Opeth with OTEP. Which is a shitty Nu-Metal band. But thanks to AniMetal, the difference is fixed.
I was about to rage.
Also I recently listened to Mastodon. They're pretty good. They're kind of what would happen if some of my favorite rock bands got together and had a giant orgy. So far i like Leviathan best.

Yes. I agree with this.

Leviathan is amazing, I own all of their albums. But I must say I love Crack The Skye the most, the solo's, the instrumental breaks, the awesomeness..
Mastodon is just amazing though :)
Recently, I've gotten into the first metal band ever, Iron Butterfly, can they be classified as Prog Metal?
IN A VIVA LA GODDA, BABY.
