Double XP
We’re offering double XP through the end of March, so you can vote on at least ten items per day and log 20 XP.
We need your help clearing the Under Judgment Movies and Under Judgement Games lists. Your votes determine what stays and goes on the site, as well as what is likely to get noticed. Thank you for any help you can give here!
Winners of our Flash Forward Jam have been decided!
The theme of this jam was to make new games with Flash, using AS2 so they run in-browser with Ruffle. Ruffle is what we are using to preserve a lot of Flash content on NG and it continues to evolve and improve with time, with AS3 support in progress.
Top Games
🏆 1st - $720 + Interview with @TheInterviewer
@MidNightMaren gave us a new classic Flash RPG, the sort that would have been a huge deal in the golden age of Flash games! We love the gameplay loop, the leveling, the music and that sweet character spawn-in animation.
🏆 2nd - $600
@TheCarpetBaker shared his appreciation for the Riddle School series by making a quirky new point and click adventure, the sort of gem you rarely see in this post-Flash world.
🏆 3rd - $500
@matt-likes-swords used this jam as an opportunity to start on the next Bullet Heaven game, remaining with Flash and seeing how far he could push Ruffle. The result is a polished shooter and great showpiece.
🏆 4th - $350
@D-Sun created a new entry in the Armed with Wings series, this time a high score competition in a ravaged flat-land. The animation and movement is top-notch and you get that feeling it’s all running better with Ruffle than was ever possible with Flash.
🏆 5th- $150
@starBlinky made an addictive art thief game where you press your luck by stealing as much as possible from a museum with each successive run.
🏆 6th- $100
@scoober-steve and @D-Sun made pure arcade fun and the game over screens must be experienced by all.
Update: After posting this I realized I was going off the prize totals I had posted in the collection page, vs the totals in the news post, which had been updated more recently. This post has been updated with some increased prize values and the addition of 6th place! This is why I should keep all the prize info in one place like I usually do.
Top Movies with Interactive Elements
🏆 1st - $200 + Interview with @TheInterviewer
@Butzbo illustrated a delightful animated adventure, presenting the player with choices throughout. It’s also great on mobile and includes a bonus dress-up game!
🏆 2nd - $150
@JuicyBeast crafted a hip spot the difference game, taking place throughout a panning animated landscape that bristles with life.
🏆 3rd - $100
@Rob3C took inspiration from games like Dragon’s Lair to bring us an animated action sequence dripping with quick time events.
🏆 Honorable Mention
We were hoping this jam would result in an old school collab and thankfully the Star Syndicate delivered, with an all-Flash recompilation of their Christmas collab.
Best Use of Mobile - $100
Cat Burglar and the Magic Museum plays and runs well on mobile, making for an all around great experience. It also went the extra mile with mobile-specific options, such as the ability to resize the screen to accommodate your mobile viewing area.
Best Celebration of Flash and Ruffle - $250
Pico's Sç̕h͊͜ọ̊ő̥l̨̉ was one of the most impressive entries in many ways, filled with nostalgia while being modern and visually exhilarating, making it the ultimate celebration of Flash and Ruffle. It was up against plenty of solid games and finished two days after the deadline but we love it so much, we created an additional award for it.
Runner-up Games
@speed8327 took us on Another Mission, a fitting name for what feels like a throwback to classic Flash games. Sniping people is fun and there are some cool mechanics at play here.
@BoMToons revisited the mechanics of classic PC text adventures and Cavern of the Evil Wizard, his remake of the game in “Big.” This time, however, there’s a surprising twist; a secret way to subvert the game and hack it to suit your needs, or even create and share a new adventure of your own!
@tRipGlyPh created a surreal point and click escape game, which is both a great throwback and also something strange and new.
This platformer by @HapPie is challenging but has great style and interesting mechanics.
@FsebastiamL made a unique platformer with cool visuals. People really want that jump button but you do get an air attack that basically does that for you.
Special Mentions
@Dungeonation kicked off the Flash Jam with his initial sponsorship but went the extra mile with this creepy 90s edutainment app.
@PsychoGoldfish and team got ambitious, making the only game that utilized our content sharing API, which also happens to have been made by PsychoGoldfish.
I feel self-conscious plugging my own game but I also want you to see the cool art by @JohnnyUtah and @Speedo, as well as hear the great music!
Huge thanks to @Dungeonation along with @BerzerkStudio, @SrPelo, @Squidly, @53xy83457, @wetzelpretzel, @Piggybank12, @Urichov, @Xinxinix, @AKA-38CAUTION and @LittleLuckyLink for sponsoring this event and making it possible!
Thank you everyone who dusted off Flash to make a new game with AS2. The results were so much better than anticipated and it makes me hopeful for more new Flash games, as well as more Flash jams in the future.
Thank you @Mike and the team at Ruffle, who continue their work to keep Flash running in the browser. If you’d like to support ongoing efforts, here’s a page on how to get involved, either with time, expertise or financial support.
