I dont think its next to impossible. It may require some flexibility though. This isnt the same situation as one i was in but i had a layover in japan, a little bit after that giant tsunami, and they were accomidating about moving my flight to not layover in Narita, even though it was relatively safe to land there. I think if you call them up you may be able to get into a flight with an airline that is part of their ring of partners, I believe Air Canada is part of the star alliance, so you can usually get on standby on united, usairways or whatever other airlines are part of the star alliance. You should definately call though and have that sorted. I wouldnt leave it to chance that the strike is over or that they will just magically place you somewhere. If you are just one person its easier to get in on standby than if you are a large party.

I can't find anything say that the strike really is on, just that the deadline is looming. They also said that it's a contract dispute with customer service employees and not like a pilots strike so planes should still be flying - even if it's fewer planes. They said that they will still operate during the strike. Better call while the people answering the phones are still there though!

The strike is on, but it's supposed to be only with services at the airport. The flights already scheduled won't be affected per se. Just be sure you know how to handle those self-service machines, or you're fucked...

Looks like we're getting pretty close now. Just wanted to mention/warn people of basic things, but worth noting nonetheless:

- be vigilant of your budget, if you are counting on money to get back home, put that money far from your reach so that you are able to allocate that money accordingly when the meet-up is over.

- be vigilant of your behavior. Dont get yourself arrested, kicked out of establishments, punched in the face, get yourself alcohol poisoning or any other undesirable mishaps. Though rare, those have all happened at different meet-ups and so they need to be mentioned.

Basically all those things above are things under your control, and with this meet-up being especially catered to adults, there should be no reason for any mishaps really. Nobody is babysitting you.

I still managed to screw myself over converting cash again - lost almost $15 to some expensive ass exchange koisk at a mall because my bank wanted $10 and a 3 day wait to exchange and sent me to the mall because "they have better rates" which was bullshit because they sell Canadian for 5 or 6 cents more than it's worth plus a $3 fee for the transaction.
