Guardian Angel

André : My mother, who I shared a flat with, came home from the doctor one day in the autumn of 1992 and told me of a dire diagnosis and the fact that she may not have much longer to live. Even though my mother was not a "good mother", I was deeply moved by possibly losing her in the near future and shortly afterwards "Guardian Angel" was written, in which a great deal of my emotions at the time are reflected.

There is also a fast-paced part in the second half, which is a kind of "nightmare set to music".

My mother (who passed away in February 2025) never knew of the song's existence.

To say goodbye to her in my own way, I composed "Goodbye, Mom."

Sean : André played this track for me in 10/92. I actually came up with a concept for the song - a sort of half spoken-word, half rap in the verses rising to something a touch more dramatic in the refrains before dying down to the recital of a prayer, which is interrupted in the middle by the aggressive, very fast-paced part of the song (a sort of f-off to negativity) before the prayer is finished at the end. To me, "Guardian Angel" was about my best friend/flatmate who had died two months earlier. Not wanting to seem like I was hijacking André's song, I didn't develop the idea into any actual lyrics.

André : Meine Mutter, mit der ich eine Wohnung teilte, kam eines Tages im Herbst 1992 vom Arzt nach Hause und erzählte mir von ihrer unheilvollen Diagnose und dem Umstand, daß sie möglicherweise nicht mehr lang zu leben habe.

Trotzdem sie keine "gute Mutter" war, bewegte mich der mögliche zeitnahe Verlust dennoch zutiefst und schon kurz darauf entstand "Guardian Angel", in welchem sich ein Großteil meiner damaligen Emotionen wiederspiegeln.

Darin befindet sich in der 2. Hälfte auch ein temporeicher Part, welcher eine Art "vertonter Albtraum" darstellt.

Meine Mutter (welche im Februar 2025 verstorben ist) hat von diesem Song nie erfahren.

Um mich auf meine Weise von ihr zu verabschieden, habe ich "Goodbye, Mom" komponiert.

Sean : André spielte mir diesen Song im Oktober 1992 vor. Ich hatte bereits eine Textidee für den Song – eine Art halb gesprochener Text, halb Rap in den Strophen, der im Refrain etwas dramatischer wird und schließlich in einem Gebet ausklingt, das in der Mitte von dem aggressiven, sehr schnellen Teil des Songs unterbrochen wird (eine Art "f-off to negativity"), bis das Gebet zum Ende des Songs dann ebenfalls seinen Abschluß findet.

Für mich ging es in „Guardian Angel“ um meinen besten Freund/Mitbewohner, der zwei Monate zuvor verstorben war. Da ich nicht vorhatte André's Song zu "entführen", habe ich die Idee letztlich nicht in einen Text umgewandelt.
