The Innocent
Lyrics/vocal arrangement (verses) : Sean Lang
Song composed (music and lyrics/vocal arrangement (refrain)) and
produced by : André C. Kalipke
André : Calm, serene, sad. A rarity by our standards, at least as far as the first two things are concerned. However, a quiet song like this one wasn't "planned", but came about due to mood. It was also impossible to foresee that I would feel the need to come up with lines for the refrain myself using some necessary words.
Sean : André submitted a short instrumental of this song in 5/92, with the full version following in 7/92. I wrote two verses for the song (based in part on "Woyzeck" by Georg Büchner) and I took the title "The Innocent" from a film which I was an extra in, but I couldn't come up with a refrain. André ended up providing the lyrics, vocal arrangement and backing vocals for the refrain in 8/92 (this version). The 1995 song "Where The Wild Roses Grow" by Nick Cave / Kylie Minogue always reminds me of this track (similar subject matter).

THE INNOCENT
I don't really know how it all got started - this mad game
But from the very first day, it was all too clear - I would never be the same
As the other people around me glared warily in dismay
From then on, I knew that it was the beginning of a sad and lonely day
Remember being down on my knees as I begged them to accept
Didn't know, I was so naive - they just turned their backs, they chose to reject
Let me go, let me stay - just running away
There's nothing I've got to stay
You won't understand - you want to take blame
But people are always the same
You see what you want - you can't see the truth
Don't want to see anything else
You follow the crowd to be like the rest
Only to follow your own interests
I don't remember the sound of the river anymore
I can't see the trickle of blood running slowly - ever so slowly - down the shore
I wish I could tell you about the happenings of last night
Maybe I could give you a clue - maybe somehow we could set this whole thing right
I think I was down on my knees as I begged her to accept
Couldn't know, I was so naive - she just turned her back, she chose to reject
