Lol, lemme through my hat into this debate. My stance remains the same as it was when this issue last arose; while in theory the portal mod system could work, I am sure the admins would be wary of handing that much power over the definitive part of NG. While I'm not saying that any such mods would abuse their powers or make bad calls, allowing a regular user to have so much control of the Portal may not be a good thing.

What I suggested a few months ago was that A (i.e. one, no more) admin was appointed as a full-time Portal guardian of sorts. I know that Wade occasionally purges the Portal, but with everything else he does he cannot be expected to be omnipresent with regards to this. However, if there were an admin whose sole purpose was to delete spammy flashes, and deal with flagged submissions (which at a rate of 2-3 flagged flashes a day must really pile up on Wade, to the point where they may just be left to sit in limbo) I feel that Portal maintenance and protection would become 100 times more regular and efficient.

The debate rages on...

Im not trying to state that Wade's role is simple, but Regular Users differ from Admins in just that. We're here by choice, they're here for employment. That's the problem with the Portal Mod system, that ultimately, its up to the mods choice. Certainly, Admins are going to hunt for the most responsible user, or, barring that, just pick one of their own to do it. But then what? Who's part of the site will suffer because they have to keep constant vigil over the trash? If we were to have a portal mod system, we should set it to 5 mods. 1 person contacts the mods with a flash that is believed to be spammy. The submission in question goes to "Administrative" Review, and the mods each view it and cast a vote for whether or not it's spammy. Then, it's released back into the Under Judgement stage. No ties, no conflict of intrest, and all Wade has to do is re-release it back into the portal.

Crusher117 is right, we have to let it be up to the individuals' choice to blam, but we have to have the judgment, as I said before, to make the right vote regarding spam submissions.

I propose we "spam-profile" users. Look at people like Snaws before all of his work got deleted. He had, what, 52 spam submissions in a matter of two months? Look in the spammer-in-questions' flash submission history. If they all got titles like "FUCK YOU N***ER!" and "DD are Faggots" or the likes, what do you think they make?

Once again, this is in no way mass-voting, as barely any of us seem to be online at the same time to coordinate one in the first place. Use common sense when viewing flashes in the Flash Portal, and obviously check back every once and a while for the Flagship Spam which are proudly emblazoned in brackets.

To me, those are like turkey shoots...but they still somehow pass anyway.

If we can bundle up, and put all of those blam/protect points to use, make it more of a head-hunting game....every man for them self can try to down spam on their own. No coordination. No alert. Just act. Do this "by the book"

If it's just a crappy sprite flash, or a lame short animation, we kind of have a sort-of moral obligation to drop a review on how they can make it better. We have time...it's not like those Under Judgment flashes shuffle along quickly.

But if it's hateful, obscene, effortless, repetitive spam? Something that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt does not belong on the portal?

I think portal mods wouldn't do much. You get a 14 days ban if two of your flashes are blammed on the same day. This being stated, just charge up you blam cannons and fire at spam, it's not hard. I've also seen a lot of "Anti ...." flashes. To me, these are just as bad the the group flashes they're against, if not worse.

The flash itself isn't particularly hateful, but it is no-doubt blamworthy material that passed judgement under the guise of something else. Good find, perfect-insanity.

We should post suspects here with a brief summary of what the flash was about while it's under judgement. Screen shots of the flash itself would be helpful as well to further solidify evidence.

Then, provided with a link, if we check back and it's a false alarm, it's okay. If it's a trojan horse spam, we flag it.

This entire process would be a lot easier if you could blow whistles on flashes after they've passed judgment. Perhaps that'll be included with the update to the site in March?

Speaking of name-change spam flashes, keep an eye on this one. It's purest crap spam of the highest order, but if it does pass, then I'm sure that like ALL other flashes by this author, be changed to "[DD] Naruto SEX" or something like that.

Hmmm...That's a tough one...I'm sure Tails would squeal with glee to be able to mark something and have it Blamed in seconds (We're his secret police already) , but I really would like to see Flashes that have Cartoon Penis Drawn in the middle and Seizure-Causing Back Round with Ear-Shattering Heavy Metal Music playing (and any others of this kind) taken off the market.

In meh opinion, the thread wouldn't work out, but we can try and report as many as we can here at the NGPD.

I fuckin hate the Kitty Krew, Faggot Federation, and clubs that are just plain spam. They claim its art, but I think its just a No-Life Community with a bunch of kids whom suck at flash and think they're hardasses because they can do whatever and offend anyone they want on the internet.

Hey I was just reading through some of the recent posts and am glad to see that there are alot of dedicated portal guards trying to help the site. I think the best way this problem could be solved by the admins would be allowing us to flag spam submissions and making it impossible to change flash when it's submitted.

I suppose the only way we as users could help, would be making an MSN network to alarm each other but that would mean breaking the rules. I think our best bet is waiting for the admins to choose a solution.

Ive asked mods about this, and they shot it down. Unfortunately, I wish now that I saved the PMs I got back, but I recently deleted my inbox.

All this talk of name and file change spam really makes me think back to when I first joined the force, and even before that time. That kind of spam has been going on for long, and I think it's finally time to take action, like the rest of you do. Usually with spam, after it's passed judgement there is nothing we can do but ignore the spam, as making a big deal out of it is exactly what the spammers want us to do, though every day users make angry reviews on Flashes that do nothing but give the spammers a source for amusement and sometimes deters the users from Newgrounds. With this type of spam, it is more than just a way for people to piss of other members, it's getting around the guidelines by swapping to complete different Flash. I have also realized that some of the original files Pornomon submits are stolen, and I have seen several of them submitted into the portal on earlier dates, though blowing the whistle wouldn't work at all since the file will be changed to something entirely different by the time it gets through to the mods or admins, so it will just waste their time.

What if the admins read this? Would it spur another roundabout of debate before it gets swept under the rug or would action sequence? The only idea we really spitballed was the Portal Mod, after all, but that should be worked out before employed. Im not worried about an admin actually reading this, but i'm a bit thoughtful as to what may or may not end up happening.

Spam does suck, but all we can do is make the choice of downvoting it or not. Im not calling for a mass-vote, nor am I bashing those who wouldnt blam it on whatever grounds.

What do we do to those who do spam though? What could we do to them? IP ban? Account Deletion? Block them from submitting? All of those are extreme and time consuming. The point of the voting system was to separate the good from the bad, by our hands. Do we need to call admins and mods in to handle our problem? If users are to be modded to handle this, fine. If we decide to ask existing mods to handle this, fine. But what will our votes count for? The honest votes, not the crew votes. The honest votes that actually laughed/enjoyed the shit that we call shit. Are they ignored? Are they wasted?

To be honest, if an admin read this then they probably wouldn't take any notice. The phrase 'Spam Does Suck' is a little too general. Some spam is actually very artistic stuff, take Zekey's stuff for example. He spams the portal, though many if his submissions are creative and well created.

What do we do to those who do spam though? What could we do to them? IP ban?

This has been done before, however the users can get around it via Tor. The amount of people using Tor around the time of the DD wipeout was astonishing.

If you've had two submissions blammed in a week you get a short ban from the portal.

I had a few ideas, but there seems to be very little that can be done.

I know there are many who say, ban the user. But then people argue that they can get around it by making a new account or other things.

But what if they added a new flag button just for spam? In theory it could work, but I wonder how well?

Lastly, instead of banning an account, or preventing an account from submitting, maybe they can secretly put a thing on an account that makes it look like the persons submissions are under judgment, but in reality will be blammed no matter what the score. This way the blammer won't know to change his account.

I have read the last page of posts for posterity, and what I'm getting is this: How do we maintain the individual Newgrounder's freedoms, while still lessening the effect of spam? This is all just speculation at this point but nevertheless, the portal mod idea doesn't float, the portal admin sounds promising, I like this idea best, but it will probably be shot down upon proposal. What I propose is a compromise, don't give the power over the portal to one person, and don't leave it all to the masses. Instead, spread the power evenly to the masses, and grant certain exemplary individuals, say the top 500 ranked B/P-ers or something, the ability to flag spam as any one would an abusive flash

Sorry for the double post, but I'll forget if I don't do it now. I just had an idea as dubious as those trojan spam flashes, the next time a big group of spammers pops up, what if somebody were to join them, stay with me here, and instead of spamming, could they not also delete some of the submissions? An undercover mission of sorts. Anyway, if this makes sense please let me know, I'm not completely sure how their operation works so this could well be impossible

That sounds like a brilliant idea, though you can't delete a Flash unless you were the one who submitted it. If you're just co-authored it makes no difference at all. I think that attacking spam crews from the inside is a good concept, though. I'd volunteer to help you with that.

Actually, portal security is acceptable. If you have anything under that, then it's not permitted though. By badge, he would pass.
