Actually, I ALMOST changed the slogan to "FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE." earlier today...

Lol, I'm sure that would make you the most popular man on the Internet, Tom.

Actually, it might.

i remember that topic, and all the crazieness it created.

With all the good coming from NG, I don't feel the need to put a negative spin on it. NG is no longer the problems of the future today, NG IS THE FUTURE, TODAY. I would change our slogan to "The Future is Now", but that was the Neo Geo slogan. Can you tell I get a lot of inspiration from SNK? :)

i think a slogen inspired from something else woulded properly represent the orginality that NG is. like new comers will look at the slogan and thing this is a fan site or something.

As for the new slogan... I came up with it one day while I was in the shower. I was thinking about how NG has grown to include all sorts of content and is basically trying to be everything to everyone. Then I realized, NG is not everything to everyone, it's everything BY everyone... I think that's pretty NEAT.

Its neat.its damn neat.

Also, I think it would be neat that users could change the slogan by themselves.

Like how people can add their message to the front page, it would be cool if I typed something in and it appeared at the top of the site automatically. (Like on weebls-stuff.com)

It also would be cool if it changed w/o having to update the site so you could just sit there for hours watching the slogan change, possibly in flash or something.

This would be a lot more true to the message of the site, "Everything by Everyone", right? Even the slogan too, that would make it a lot more bad-ass.

That reminds me a little of "From each, according to his ability, to each, according to his need". (That would be a lot better slogan for Newgrounds IMHO.)

But I did like the old one better, though :(

Maybe I'll get used to the new one over time :/

First, porn is banned from the bbs,

I think this is more of a decency thing than anything else. There is porn aplenty all over the web. Is not having in on the BBS really going to ruin anyone's day?

Then, the influx of commercial flash animations from Sony and the like,
Then, Numa numa,

Well, we did start the Numa Numa craze, after all. We didn't go mainstream with that, we simply became the mainstream.

then the page re-directions on the site (you know, those ones where it says "view this page while the next page is loading")

Okay, that is annoying. It doesn't happen very often with me, but when it does, I hate it.

My opinion on what to do?

Paid accounts, blah blah blah.

This is actually a really good idea. As long as the non-payers get what they always have, they shouldn't have anything to complain about. I spend enough time on NG to think that it's almost a crime that I get it for free. If NG were a NPO, I'd even be willing to donate money to it, so I think a voluntary subscription service would be a better way to go (seeing as it's not a NPO, after all). It doesn't seem all that absurd.

This really needs to be addressed before you start asking people to voluntarily submit icons, really.

I think the pedants on the site are more than willing to make sure every animation has an icon, but I think it would be a good direction for Tom & crew to look at, regardless.

the irony of this all is - as part of my human computer interaction module i have been doin for my degree - i did a critique on newgrounds of which i have just submitted and will shortly be tested. some of the things i shot the site down on were the method of signing in and the difficulty of locating the forums.... they have now been fixed.... hence my entire paper goes to waste! damn u Tom!!

Love the slogan, and I agree; it's a lot more topical now than ever. NewGrounds really is *the* source for new, interesting material by designers of all ages. This is a great way to get your material seen; my last game had 100K views just here on NG! That number floors me, to get so much exposure really makes this whole place worthwhile for everyone, not just those having fun and making something silly, but those who are really trying to break out and get noticed, to get a job, to get heard.

I was a teen when I first found NewGrounds, and it appealed to me. Now I'm an adult, about to graduate college and look for a job I can love, and NG is still there, in a different, more meaningful way. Because of this site, I've been given job offers to do something I've always wanted to do; make programs that people enjoy. If I get one person to say 'dood, you r0x0r, that was l33t', well, that makes my day (and makes my formalistic english mind cringe). The new slogan fits so well with what NewGrounds has become, so far from its porn-fueled days of yore. "Everything, by Everyone." So simple, so true, so... right. It's the way I view NG, the way I've understood it to be for a long time now. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Keep up the good work, Tom; this place changes people's futures. It's changed mine. Thank you.

Happy

As for the other complaints about the new header... We'll try making the buttons a little smaller and cutting down the vertical space as much as we can without screwing it up. And I promise, the redesign Stamper is working on LOOKS AMAZING and fits much nicer with the new header, which he has already been tweaking.

I like the new slogan, but I want to point out that angsty teen stuff is a part of everthing, and while it doesn't need to prevail, please don't move towards shutting it out. Oh, and I've always like the pictures on the buttons, even though they didn't relate to much of anything. It'd be great if you could put pictures on the new ones too.
Otherwise, I like the changes! Rock on!

No, Tom. Just make it "FUCK YOU".

I agree.
I'd like 'FUCK OFF' more though, so the website is more welcoming.

"Everything, by everyone" is too obvious, but the old one even if it sounded made by an "angsty teen" had more attitude: if you were a first time visitor to NG, you wouldn´t expect "The problems of the future, today", but seeing "Everything by everyone" feels emotionless and a bit dull, like something you didn´t thought too much and decided to put it just to change. Change are excellent, but only when you have thought enough about them.

Also, the new header is great, but I think it feels abit "empty" without the icons for each section. Perhaps you should design some "minimalistic" icons, that were easy to recognise so the names are "in the background". And also, why don´t you put some onMouseOver actions, so the buttons change abit, because the buttons now look too "static".

This is a crappy looking sketch, but with some work around this idea, you´ll get what I meant. Anyway, I think everyone feels the new banner (and the slogan) needs more work to "shine" in the way it should.

I'ts a business and Tom has alot of people to support.
My opinion on what to do?
Please do tell
Paid accounts. You can be a grounds gold member for free, and view ads. But! If you want to go around this, you can possibly be a premium or something member and get a bunch of added features like no ads and you can submit larger movies and a lot of other benefits on the portal and what-not.

I'm sure plenty of people spend a good amount of time on this site, I personally wouldn't mind paying a small fee every month to get added features on this site that I spend perhaps 3 hours every day lurking around and I'll probably reciprocate more back to the site by doing this than closing annoying pop-up windows.
I do however, think that subscriptions shouldn't be forced and that regular grounds gold members should still get all the things that they currently get, but the premium members get bonuses on top of this .. like more points for depositing, submit more/larger movies to the portal, possibly more secrets in their profile, and whatever.

I've seen other sites try this and it doesn't work. even if you don't remove anything from the free accounts it will still go over poorly with other members. I've been around here a bit longer than most of you, since the days of telebubbies and assasins, back before newgrounds existed. Would it be fair that because I don't own a credit card and cannot financialy commit to the site that I should recieve lesser service? Newgrounds is an idea. It has evolved but it hasn't changed. It's not about whos the best or what you can get. I'ts about people make and sharing thier passions for internet media, music pictures movies and games.

I have to say... something I never thought I would.

I love the change.

The banner... it's incredible! The Search Ng - so conviently placed!

But, 'Everything, by Everyone'...

I'm not sure what to think on it. It's sort of true - the posts, the flashes, the audio... but what about the site itself? The domain? The portal?

Shouldn't it be, Newgrounds, by Tom Fulp or some utterly boring slogan such as that?

All I have to say is "Good work, dude". This site has become part of my everyday life and I'm a proud member. It has been a lifesaver many times as I have used this page as reference in Fine Arts for "new tendencies" and "social and political activism through art".

Everyone has to move on and evolve. This is a perfect example to show this. Let's do what we like and have a great time with it forever.
everything BY everyone
That isnt just a fantasic slogan for newgrounds, thats a fantasic slogan for what the future should be, and probably will be,

The internet is createing a world where anybody in it has the power to make a creative impact on the others. Theres few, if any middle men, the only thing that stands in the way is talent.
Newgrounds does a fantasic job of makeing the talent shine though.

It will be interesting to see if Google Video, and simerla sites can pull of the same trick with live action.

Maybe in the future the viewers and the content creators will be one and the same?
No publishers, No TV Networks....games, flash, film, tv, music....straight from creator to consumer.
With no middle men, when we do pay to watch something, it will cost us far less.

Dunno about the rest of you guys, but if Dustball & Gell ever made a series of Peoplemation, Id pay 50cents or so to watch one :)

Everything BY Everyone.....its not just a solgan, its a phosoify.

We need a new slogan besides what Tom put up. It just doesn't fit what Newgrounds is and what it has become. A new slogan needs to put Tom's vision of a community together with the identity of Newgrounds. "Everything, By Everyone." Just doesn't say Newgrounds in my mind or in the minds of a lot of us.

"Newgrounds- The thoughts of the world, Collected!"
"Newgrounds- The chaos of the world, Realized!"

Here are two of my ideas. You people can think of something.

Talk around and e-mail around. See what you can come up with. Let's make sure we get Tom in on this one as well.

Your ideas or hatemail can be directed to: LEDunk2007@aol.com
