I think the changes to the tail are good. The body became too dark in my opinion. And even if you wanna stick with dynamic backlighting, you can't just leave the face "normally" bright and even have a regular drop shadow from the hair. Face suggests front lighting VS body and tail suggest backlighting

Yeah i see what you mean. I tried shading the face but it just didn't look right so I left it.
I'm going to start using references for shading. Should help.

Not bad for a first attempt. I myself have never tried to create a sprite but though it would be cool to create a busy sprite picture. You can try if you want. The busier the better.

No, just a lot going on (picture below) it'd take a while but if done right looks great when it is finished.

Cool, the key thing with stuff like this is to take your time. You can post characters/buildings here or PM me with them if you want some criticism. Just don't rush and I'm sure you can make something brilliant in this style.

There's a difference between flat out "tracing" and "referencing".

It looks too shaky, and upon further analysis, you've only used three frames.
A better choice would have been to use 4 frames, with a standing frame between each movement frame, to better illustrate the walk cycle, like so
