Reviews for "Super Morse Code RPG"

Bleep Bleep Bleeeeeeep Bleep Bleep

This seems pretty cool, and my only problems were that I would have had no idea wtf was going on if I hadn't read all the author comments, and the fact that it was semi-unplayable due to about 75% of the time, when I tapped space, it apparently registered it as though I was holding it down. I tried tapping it really fast, tried different speeds and everything, but it still didn't work properly. Also, about 20% of the time when I hit space it didn't register at all. There's no way it could be lag, as I have an excellent PC and I even put the quality on low, so unless there's some major unseen problem that only affects me, that's sort of not good.

Grent responds:

For some reason, this issue has been happening on several computers, seemingly regardless of processing power. PM me with what operating system and web browser you use and I'll see if I can figure it out.

It's pretty alright

I had a lot of trouble yesterday with the controls but I used them again today and they didn't give me any problems. If there were staged battles instead of random encounters it would have been better, but besides that it's pretty cool.

Grent responds:

This is some interesting commentary; I actually got some complaints earlier in development that the first and last battles were staged. Glad to hear the control situation resolved itself, though.

Bravo

So I liked the simple design to the game and how well you implemented morse code using the spacebar... I guess technically to win I did only have to press one button. This game wasn't that difficult, however, yet I did like the fact it wasn't so that I wouldn't have to spend so much time leveling up on a flash rpg...I hate putting in so much effort in flash games, I don't get why people make them so long sometimes.

A for effort. D for difficulty. A for Concept. C for everything else.

4/5, 7/10

Grent responds:

I'm a little unsure as to how you would have me change the difficulty given your description, but thanks for the review and I'm glad you liked it!

pretty great

but it gets pretty boring
and @howchildish
they couldnt have put more time in this because its the GAME JAM
they have limited time to make the game
like 48 hours or something
so yeah.

Grent responds:

72 hours, but yeah, gameplay depth and graphics took a backseat to actually finishing the game.

Nice improvements

I played this before the STOR was fixed, and I was able to beat it with relatively no problems; the only problem I had was that levels become very difficult to get once you're high enough, and with no ability to heal, I very nearly died and had to start all over. However, Hitler himself was a pushover. I like the addition of the "current morse" box to show the player what he had signalled thus far; if you look at the current morse and find that part of a letter was entered incorrectly, you can just abort by sending a bunch of dots of something. It eliminates the guesswork, especially in cases of Flash/browser lag where the player might not know what signal was entered.

I think my main complaint about the game is that the morse tone is too annoying... when you have to enter hundreds of morse commands, it becomes very grating very quickly. I know this game has music, but after my first playthrough, I have to play the game muted because I just can't stand all the repetitive beeping. Add to this the fact that the same codes are entered over and over (for example, A, 1, A, 1, A, 2, A, 2, A, 2, S, A, 1, etc.) and those repetitive tones get even more repetitive. It would be nice to have the option to mute only the morse tone; the game would still be completely playable, since there is an on-screen indicator when the spacebar is pressed, and the player would still be able to hear the music.

Speaking of music, on my first playthrough I noticed that after I beat the game, the ending music was overlapping another piece of music. This may have been fixed since the first version (I haven't beaten the game again yet, but I'm on my way), but I wanted to mention it just in case.

Lastly, I know you say that the game is short enough to not need checkpoints or saves, but I disagree. Let's just say that the game can be beaten in 45 minutes... if I start playing, then something comes up and I have to leave the game before beating it, I don't want to have to redo the last 30 minutes of gameplay just to get back to where I was. Whether you think it's short or not, saves/checkpoints are always a good idea. What if the game takes 45 minutes to beat, I had played for 44 minutes and Hitler's fire-form was almost dead and BOOM my Flash plugin crashes? I would be right cross, indeed.

Please add in a save feature and the ability to mute morse tones, and this game would be much better. Overall though, not bad, especially considering the handicap of only using one button.

Grent responds:

Pretty much everything you mentioned is on our short list for things to address in the sequel (minus the game finishing music glitch, which has been fixed). As for any of it showing up in this game, I'm pretty much through messing with this version. I might open it back up in a few months to try to figure out what's wrong with the medals, but in the likely case that doesn't happen, I'm probably not making any more changes. Glad you liked the game, though!
