2-Bit Explorer is a game where exploration is king. A Lovecraftian Zelda-like. Explore the labyrinth that apparently has 1 more bit than you do and find your way out of the strange reality you find yourself in. Find the adventure you seek...

---

SYNOPSIS:

You are looking for adventures in another dimension. You have the tools you need to search and find countless treasures and glory, you just lack complete understanding of it.

The bell you held was alien to you, but you knew what it did. You ring it once and the air starts to warp and contort. You ring it twice, your vision dims and the floor seems to disappear beneath you.

You ring thrice, and you feel great pressure...

Saving Issue: I believe I figured the saving issue some players reported. This error will occur if you have played 1-Bit Explorer before because both games where using the same APP ID for some reason. Reuploaded both games with the APP ID change and it should all be good! If you happen to still be encountering errors, simply clear your cache for Newgrounds and it should get rid of old references that were saved in the cache. Please, feel free to report if any additional errors occur :)

FEATURES:

  • Open-ended - You are given free reign to how you will explore this world and approach it's mysteries

PATCH:

TRAPDOORS:

Now, once you fall a trapdoor it will remain visible and you can no longer step on it. Trap doors path is now more evident with patterns on the map.

HIDDEN WALLS:

Now all hidden walls have hints to indicate their locations (look for the direction of the eyes)

THE SHADE BUG:

The Shade can no longer be sacrificed more than once.

DARK CORRIDORS:

The waiting puzzle now has several tips in form of warnings for the player.

BLOCK PUSHING PATTERN:

The block pushing pattern in the hidden corridors that lead to the Forgotten City are now more evident.

HELM OF VISION STATUE PUZZLE:

There is now an indication other than the poem in Antoine's house. Follow the eye pattern to know where to go.

Yowza, I loved 1-Bit Explorer a lot and this seems to be much of the same, but with some interesting improvements and quality-of-life, such as the ease of inventory management, active item usage, and new camera that allows for big spanning environments instead of just room-by-room. I'm definitely down for it, and I immediately got addicted to exploring and solving the various puzzles, some of which are the obvious ones that require items, but others more subtle and knowledge/observation-based such as noticing that eyes point towards illusion walls: clever stuff! It's definitely pretty intimidating what with the big map and the tons of spots I'm going to have difficulty remembering to go back to once I get something, necessitating loads of backtracking, but I'm all for it!

Overall I'm very pleased and looking forward to playing more, but if I had to have any feedback so far, it'd be some minor things like:

*While using the items such as the sword more directly is nice, it's a rather slow and stiff animation to do so: makes me much less inclined to cut all those bushes as it can be so tedious, and because it shares a button with interaction, it can also be very awkward when you're trying to do so but end up pulling out the sword instead. I'd hate to see someone be so annoyed with how slow it is that they don't experiment enough to realize you can chop ivy to reveal doors, for example!

*Movement can be a bit too fast at times: sometimes I like it because it means it's much less tedious to explore the world and backtrack everywhere, but other times I hate it because I go a bit too quickly when I'm trying to delicately weave through pitfalls and other such traps.

*As said, the game can be pretty dang overwhelming at times: so much to see and do makes it so easy to get lost and lose track of whatever you were doing. There's also plenty of times where I'm not quite sure whether I don't have what I need or I do but I'm just not doing it right (so many unsure dead-ends) or times where I don't know the effect of what I've done, like turning in the music box to the sister. Not sure what's needed here: maybe some sort of 'last item received', or a journal or map or whatever? Also might just be what it is and you gotta deal with it, haha!

Great stuff you got here!

Great game! Honestly a lot more in depth than I was expecting.

My main complaint is that it's a very frustrating game to parse at times. It's very unclear where to go sometimes, and the labyrinthine nature of the game with no map makes it kind of annoying when you want to revisit somewhere but don't remember the exact route, or forgot which places you have and haven't visited yet. Even as I'm writing this review having explored everywhere I'm forgetting how to get to a lot of places and don't even want to try loading an old save to serve each deity because it'd mean wandering around to remember where things are even when I know what I need to do next.

Additionally the music box quest felt kind of pointless and the reward for valac shards felt massively underwhelming as by the time I both collected all of them and figured out where they go I already had all the books that told me how to and already managed to kill the bosses minus the final one, which the hints didn't really help at all for.

Despite all that I still pushed through the frustration and got to the end and explored everything, which is a testament to how compelling the world is and how good the game feels when things do work! This could honestly be a steam game with a little more polish, longer playtime, and some of the frustrating bits ironed out (with maybe some overworld enemies or mechanics to keep exploration interesting and not just wandering about). Solid game!

----SPOILERS/TIPS FOR TROUBLESOME PARTS BELOW FOR THOSE THAT WANT IT----

General tip - swing your sword at grassy walls in the labyrinth, you can sometimes open up a path.

Spiral doors - get the fan and blow the pinwheels. Forget exactly where but might be near one of the temples listed below.

Can't fight any deities - Requires the helmet of vision then you need to speak to the skeleton guy in the bone pit area.

Can't Find mammon/blacksmith/explorer books 5-7: Forgotten City. In the place where it says "The floor feels unstable" just wait in place for a minute and you'll end up in a new area.

Eye corridors at the end of the puzzle gauntlet - Hard to explain but I basically went with the corridor that had the least patterns on the ground. I remember the first corridor you go down.

Temples - One in the forgotten city, one past the puzzle gauntlet with the stairs where music plays in the basement, down the elevator past the eye statues (enter the order in reverse to open the elevator), one below Antoine's house.

Temple beneath Antoine: come back after you found the stranger on the bench above ground, and again by mammon (might be a third place I don't remember. The library?)

this is really fun, I'll definitely be coming back to finish it!

I'm confused. Is there another hidden puzzle like the 3-block one for the last valec shard? Also, why do I need my torch upgraded? I have defeated the moon but still want the shard. Am i missing something? I've travelled around every area again trying to figure this out, and why is there a gold pedestal in Armon's place?

Fiddleling responds:

Hello there! Thanks for playing the game!

For the torch upgrade, you need it to reach the Threshold of Reality. If you don't have the torch, something will kick you out of there if you attempt to get to it.

For the shards, here is a list with an overall location of each:
- 1 outside Antoine's House
- 1 near the temple south of Antoine's House
- 2 in the Labyrinth surface
- 1 in the room before Limos Chamber
- 1 inside the walls before the prison section of the Nun
- 1 in the prison section before the Nun
- 1 underneath the trapdoor section
- 1 in near the temple in the Courtyard
- 4 in the corridors after you fall through the ground after waiting a bit in the dark corridors (near where the Chanting Monk is)
- 2 in the Forgotten City, 1 being outside and the other in one of the houses to the south

For the gold pedestal, that is for Mammon followers when they need their weapons upgraded.

Hope this helps! Best of luck!
