I want a kick ass computer 2009-05-02 05:42:35

I recently obtained a new laptop with hardware that kicks the living f*** out of my old rig. I was dancing happy for weeks, showing my new rig to my friends, till my best friend gets a glorious sex machine of a computer and completely crushes my ego. I'm thinking about saving some money for a gaming computer, but I don't know where to start in my search for a gaming computer, any suggestions?

Alienware computers.

Those things use mother fucking technology from the year 2020, the inside doesn't even look like a computer. They also have laptops, which are bad as because it has a fucking big alien head on it which changes color.

Vista isn't slow, its just that you need to only use it with a new computer.

Don't expect fucking Vista to work on your moms e-machine.

OS are like games, people bitch about how Vista wont work on their computer because its like they are trying to run fucking Wii games on their Nintendo 64.

Oh, well if it was computer, then hell yeah, of course making your own is the way to go.

He is saying lappy though.

I just kind of mentioned Alienware so I could make him think its really bad ass and then he looks at that phat price tag.

In case of a lappy then I say you should just go down and have them help you out, it really depends on what extent you are willing to pay and what certain stuff you want in the lappy.

You didn't need to bash the alienware joke in the other thread, which got locked anyway.

Oh what the hell fyndir, I lurved you.
Mainly since you are the only non-mod whos name I remember.

Retard.

I have the very highest computer you could have, custom built, top of the range, can play everything on maximum quality, including Assassins Creed and Crysis, doesn't even slow it down. And I have Vista.

What are the specifications of your laptop?

I have a lovely new computer- and Vista is a big pile of balls, my friend. Looks flashy and beautiful, but is famously arse-painful. XP is the one!

I didn't think the N64 could run optical media, I must dig it out and have a go ;)

There is no such thing asbuying a good gaming computer.

$1500 is the amount you'd be looking at for a computer of decent caliber. That much will get you a long way in the terms of power these days, much more than even a couple of months ago.

Before you start putting together a parts list, you need to do some research on how computers get put together, what part does each, etc. When you start looking for parts to buy, google reviews and such for them. Don't rush things and put time into research into this, and in the end you'll have something better than your friend's no matter what because YOU made it.

Ignorant poster is ignorant.

Alienware is pretty much the worst choice you could possibly make, since you're paying an excessive premium for branding instead of good parts.

The absolute best way to get a good gaming computer on a budget is to learn about parts and build one yourself, although if the only reason you want one is to be "better" than your friend then it's a waste of money either way.

I've seen alien ware, in order to get premium stuff you'd pay well over $4000+, but my computer knowledge of computer is shit, so I'm not so gung ho about making one myself. Im talking about getting a pre-made laptop within a price range of about $1000- $2000

I see many people are complaining about Vista.

I'll make it clear.

It's prettier than XP (and safer), but slower.

The end.

If you want a really nice computer than I suggest building your own instead of buying one. You can get a PC that's much more powerful and cheaper than a store bought one if you build it yourself.

Wait, what?

You can get an AMD processor for the same price with more performance.

No shit sherlock. But if you're going to get an Intel processor, not overclocking it is a waste because they do it really well. A stock cooler would hold you back because of the temps.

Buy a netbook. Sure, it's not the fastest rig, but it sure will make all look at you for sure.
I have one and the GF likes it a lot. I'm posting this on my netbook now.
They have lots of things already built in and a high battery duration, standard WLAN and an ethernet port, USB ports, external video port, etc.

No shit sherlock. AMD has some great budget deals, but my "wait, what?" was more directed at the "fails because it has Intel" remark. Considering that Intel has been mopping the floor with AMD for a little while now, it was just a stupid thing to say. AMD is hardly even keeping up with Intel's Core 2 lineup, and that's not even their latest generation.

I do like that AMD offers enthusiast versions of the processors (unlocked multipliers, etc) without a retarded price premium like Intel. They also scale pretty well in server platforms, but I don't think he wants an octo socket machine.

Please, DO NOT get an alienware, they are bad and like others have said, you are paying for the brand name, like an iPod. Get an Emachines, my brother has one, factory, nothing added and it can run Crysis, GTA IV, Gears Of War, Halo, Halo 2, Farcry, UT3, all that shit.

Well I'll admit Intel is in the lead. But if he wanted one of the best processors on the market I'd recommend him a i7. Instead of getting a E5200 or whatever he can get a 7750BE. Also FYI the Phenom ll processors are better than the Core 2 lineup.

Alienware laptops are basically just Dell XPS laptops stuck inside a cool looking case. I am not saying they are bad, I am just saying that they aren't that special. With Alienware, you're kind of just buying a brand with a cool light-up keyboard.

@ OP: It looks like you just want a kickass gaming PC because someone else has one, do you really need it? Unless your awesome laptop can't play games then the answer is no.

I dont even.

You really should have been more specific in your original post, based on this new information I can give you a good, detailed response.

Laptops are not for gaming, they lack the proper cooling and the price will always be excessively high because of the specialised parts, if you really want something you can play games on then get a PC, not a laptop.

Given that you're talking about having a fairly new laptop in the OP anyway, I can only assume you're one of two things, a moron or a spoiled brat, if you have a good, working laptop, then why would you possibly want a new one?

Based on the OP it sounds like your sole reason is to show off, and that's just sad.

If you honestly have a $2,000 budget then you can put together a really nice gaming PC, which will be better than any laptop at the same price.

well, yeah by the way I stated the post, I do sound kinda like some bratty child, but in all honesty I really asked out of curiosity too see my options in the near future when I get a job and move out of my parents house. for now, my budget is only a few hundred bucks. the laptop I have now is decent and does a good job of playing some recent games, but its still pretty basic, has little ram and memory. I'm just searching for some good suggestions to follow when i can sum up a good enough budget for a gaming computer. which I guess is better fit for a PC I guess =P

Core I7 Oc'd to 3.2 GHZ
295GTX dual GPU Nvidia graphics card
6GB triple channel DDR3
650GB Hard Drive
1000W PSU
24" HD 1080P monitor with HDMI hookups

Alien ware charges about 3000 ish for a machine like this
I paid 2000 WITH monitor and vista OS

Moral of the story, build your own... you get fucked buying a "high performance" gaming machine from any company.
