I've been wanting to make a faster, darker synthwave song for a while and this came out yesterday while continuing on my attempt at writing more music by writing and uploading what I've made in that day, regardless of tweaks that might need to be made. I also wanted a slightly different song form from the last two songs and allowed myself to go past the 3:30 mark.

I probably won't post anything for a little bit because the weekend will be busy, but I might upload something else that I worked on a while ago :) Enjoy

I've decided that after a while, I will come back to all of these songs and tweak them once I've had space from them so I can focus on the mix without thinking too much of the writing. Tweaks for this include maybe turning down the snare, fixing the abruptness of the verse melody line and its cutoff modulation, and anything else people suggest!

Cool synths at 1:30. You could’ve switched up the drumbeat every 8bars or something. Otherwise good stuff!

Thanks for your reply! :)

Definitely agree that more variation would be helpful here. I haven't listened to this for over a year so all of its weaknesses are more apparent. I believe I wrote this and a bunch of other pieces during the course of a week in a single sitting so there was probably a lot of copy/pasting going on! :)

Look at you being so active :O!
Seems like Chrono got here quite a bit before me on this one :p
As with the other ones, I love the vibe. The melodies and the rhythm is catchy :3
In fact, I think I got so lost in the piece it gave me a minor high...

McGorilla42 responds:

Hey, Lucid! :) Thank you for replying again. I'm glad you like the piece of music. Hopefully I can pop out a couple next week too! I actually like this one more than the others so maybe I'll do something similar but different...who knows?

This one has a really cool sort of dark tension, and it reminds me of some classic 80's movie soundtracks. I can see a well-armed S.D. Bob "Snake" Pliskin roaming a post-apocalyptic city at night in my mind's eye. Or maybe a scene from Blade Runner. Just really loving that sound!

I don't honestly have much to critique in this instance, but there are some times where the melody seems a bit thin. Adding harmonies here or there, or even harmonic echoes, to the main melodic lead could enrich the sound. Besides that, it all sounds great.

Basically, what I mean by "harmonic echoes" would be to repeat the melody line, but timed a bit later so that it becomes like a whole other harmonic layer. Not really sure if there's a term for that or not.

I also wanted to take a moment to comment on how beautifully you've been adding reverb to your snares in all these tracks! It really gives them that old school charm.

McGorilla42 responds:

Hey! So happy to hear from you yet again :)

Definitely agree with the lead melody line -- I agree that it feels a little thin. I think that some of the other elements are quite frequency-rich and don't leave much space for mids to shine through in the lead, which is something I'll look at! I really enjoy your idea though -- it tackles the problem in a different way from simply EQing around it. I'll add it to the list and see what I can play with to get it sounding a bit richer. Almost like a delay, I'm guessing? Actually, now that I think about it, one of the last things I did to that melody was to pull back the delay on it and remove some of the chorus so it sat a bit more central because it was getting lost...Hmm! I'll check it out when I go back :)

And thanks about the reverb! I've been playing more with reverb and delays lately and have been trying a more gentle EQ on them so they can actually be heard. I usually did a 600hz/6k bandpass, but that really makes them barely audible, so I let more of the highs through, which suits the style! I'm kind of scared of misusing reverb and delays, but I feel like I'm getting at a point where I'm able to manage them more effectively and I'm glad you noticed.

Keep well, Chrono!

very cool

McGorilla42 responds:

Thanks, Erik! :)
