The Newgrounds Composer

{Edit: Thanks so much for the frontpage feature <3}

I joined Newgrounds in 2013, but I spent a lot of time in the shadows, for years and years before then. Long before I started playing the piano, I played games and watched animations on Newgrounds. I think I may have first visited Newgrounds around 2004, when I was just 9 years old. It's a long time ago now, but I think the first animation I saw on here was "PALADIN episode 1", by Jazza.

I continued lurking around the site from time to time, and I also continued to watch Jazza's work. A particularly impactful animation was ":the Composer:", from 2007. At this point I had not even started playing any instruments myself; little did I know I would one day become a composer myself. When I eventually did, I could think of no better place to share my music, than Newgrounds!

When I first started off creating music, I had a lot to learn. Thankfully, this wonderful site provided me with an amazing community that helped me grow and develop as a musician, and perhaps also as a person. I still have far to go, but I hope that this piece shows just how helpful NG has been for me!

The aim of this song is to be original, yet still portray more or less the same story as in :the Composer:

Therefore, I highly recommend watching the animation in order to understand the full context. I feel like it has held up very nicely, and I find it very impactful to this day. I am sure I am not alone in that.

On that note, I wish you all a very happy Pico Day!

honestly reading stories about how personal newgrounds can be for some people is always nice, as i also had a similar story with this site.

as of the composition, I sadly dont know enough about music to give a detailed critique other than saying i really liked the dynamics you used, it conveys the feeling of starting a new activity, gradually becoming better at it and being overcome with passion for it to then return to a feeling of peace, not in a sense of losing interest but to show that even though the inicial outburst of passion is gone (or there's not enough time to indulge in creative works like in the past due to real life issues, but maybe that's me projecting too much here :P) there's still some enjoyment in returning to it very nicely.

also I loved the choir in the climax at 2:44, I love choirs in music in general.

if anything the electronic section near the end felt a bit out of place in terms of instrumentation (but not armonies) and the guitar segment at the end also felt a bit out of place even though less so than the electronic one

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thank you for the detailed review, and of course for listening!

I feels to me like you understood the song quite well. Naturally, the parts in the end do feel a little bit out of place, as this is not a standalone song. I see that you watched the animation, so those sections are an homage to the parts where the composer realises that music has changed and evolved, but then also seeing that there will always be people with similar struggles and experiences, regardless of what changes.

P.S. I like choirs as well ^ ^

I like the furtive beginning and the gradually more energetic and upbeat feel by around the 1-minute mark. The string at 1:30 or so are a nice touch, and the brass at 1:50 really helps thicken up the texture. Something about the timing of the harmonies/syncopations at 2:22 doesn't quite line up. Maybe it's that the string samples aren't quite reaching their peak volume on the down beat? The piano line at 3:11 was a welcome return to a more mellow vibe, but the transition there was also a tad abrupt. You really tripped me out with the couple short encores at the end, haha. Feels like they're the seeds of two entirely different pieces, but I especially liked the dreamy guitar at the very end. :) Keep at it, LSD! ^_^

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks for leaving another review!

You're right about 2:22. It's always difficult to balance orchestral instruments around the piano, even if I would've recorded with a metronome, as the playing is quite dynamic. I feel like the mix could also use some improvement in a few areas. Other than that, I'm quite happy with the arrangement. The ending is indeed a bit unorthodox, but it makes sense in the context of the inspiration for the music! I recommend watching the animation, as the piece is partially based on that ^ ^

Wow, reading the description while listening to the song messed me up so much.
It matched perfectly... and this song does resemble The Composer as well.

Great song and good luck on your music journey!

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks you for listening, and for the review! I'm glad that you feel I more or less succeeded in what I set out to do :)

Hey can I used for a video for my instagram?

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Sure! Thanks for listening :)

Nice work, good fantasy and emotion mixed.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thank you!
