Reviews for "Amber Helix"

Added to favorites. Why? This is one of those games that is well done, but it has that dreaded length and difficulty so I need to play in intervals. I WILL finish this game. It deserves a higher score, which means you need to make a sequel that has improvements and leaves out the problems that this game has (user comments state them pretty well)

Good work

AmberHelix responds:

I have done some work on a sequel, but I still want to update this game more before I start doing that for real. =)

Good game nothing to add about the levels but a wide range of purchasable wepons with upgrades would be nice. Also how do i exactly upgrade the drones you wrote that when you get them and the upgrade is selected where is the upgrade function?

AmberHelix responds:

You need to upgrade Drone Control three times and get three drone slots before you can upgrade drones. To upgrade a drone just click the upgrade drone button and then the drone you wish to upgrade. (if the drone is equipped you also need to hold shift)

Cool game, VERY interesting history and mechanics (particularly drone system) however the game becomes a bit repetitive.

Can be hacked with GE for great amounts of experience. Did it after I realized I could NEVER complete it without investing an amount of time I do not have. Didn't affect negatively my experience (On the contrary!)

Excelent overall, however the difficulty curve is very accentuated. Shield regen is a "trap", as to stop firing causes drones to flood the screen.

Improvements I suggest: Different weapon configurations. Spread could had been switched to instead of a power up (cannons can compensate for momentum, so why not spread by selection?) and also a bomb would been nice sometimes.

Greatest pros: Music, mechanics, history, upgrade system.

The only flaws I really consider you MUST pay attention on the sequel (do a sequel): The game becomes very repetitive and difficulty rises a LOT faster than it should.

IMHO, flash games should NEVER be based on farming/grinding (those "IDLE" games are an exception, that's their point), since it attends mostly casual gamers (as me!), and as casuals, we may not have time to invest on grinding. Grinding is the worst RPG element ever conceived. It is just BAD. Grinding is bad, so having to grind is bad too. Do not make grinding based flash. It is bad. It's an outdated RPG concept that goes back to NES and older consoles, since lone kids had nothing to do with their time so they could grind on breathes of fire and final fantasies.

Gaming is about challenge. Not grinding. Say NO to grinding based games. do that and you are fine.

AmberHelix responds:

You don't need to hack, there are cheats for you if you read through the controls window. =)

On easy i can play through the game without grinding, no need to repeat levels, in fact it gets too easy as I am overpowered after a while.

I like it. I got stage 5. Its tough love approach and need to acquire lots of xp (while losing them for trying risks) is not for everyone. And despite a promising beginning, I don't think this would reward me enough for mastering it. Not liking the upgrades so far. And .05 damage drones to start with? Author, please.

When you die, you get no experience.

AmberHelix responds:

If you're playing on "Death" difficulty and have no upgrades to intelligence, then yes, you loose all experience you've gained on the stage you were on when you died. Otherwise how much you loose depends on difficulty and how high your intelligence stat is. With 100% intelligence or higher, you'll never loose experience no matter the difficulty. =)
