Reviews for "Aetherpunk 1.1"

pretty awesome

this is the first time im playing this game, so i cant compare it to before the updates. however, i enjoyed the hell out of it. it is pretty addicting and im very happy with the difficulty curve. you can really get a feel for how you want to take this game on before the levels get too hard. also the amount of exp and money gained compared to the level, i feel, is incredibly balanced. graphic style, while not the best graphics out there, are perfect for the game, both creating an easy environment to understand and not taking away from the mood of the game. the music is easy to listen to, its not overly abrasive and doesnt create the same type of anxiety as similar games. im not crazy about the weapon selection, it doesnt feel like theres enough diversity to me, but its obviously a work in progress, so i wont penalize it in my rating. overall, great game

Below average for the genre; bad balancing.

Graphics: 5/10 - The graphics are good up to a point. Eventually you won't see any new creatures, and a lot of the creatures look Alien-esque. Little variety after awhile. But, I can look past that. The biggest problem is that the graphics are not optimized. I have a dual core processor, 4 gigs of RAM, and a 1 gig memory card. While my computer is no where beast mode, it should be able to easily handle a flash game. When you get an automatic weapon, the game becomes unplayable. I took two points off this score due to optimization issues.

Music: 7/10 - Good music, especially the intro

Storyline: 5/10 - Nothing too unique or original. I do like the beastiary. I knocked off a point however, because the damn text is too hard to read!

Difficulty / Gameplay: 3/10 - The gameplay has been done before, and done much better. Difficulty, the games balance, is paramount to a genre like this. If the game is too hard, you won't get many people to play it. If the game becomes far too easy, the game becomes boring. This game has a problem with both.

Up until wave 10, the games difficulty curve is pretty good. Though I found it odd that I only needed to buy one weapon (the coil gun) to get to that stage. So I saved up for a turret; then the game became easy. That's fine. But then I got infinite ammo for the coil gun; then the game became far too easy.

I saved up for the 'bigger' weapons, expecting them to be even better, but they all ended up lagging my computer, dealing piss poor damage, or both. Weapon balancing is all over the place. You can get to the point where you watch one entrance, because your turret can kill everything else quickly. It also gets to the point where you die in two hits from a ranged attack that may be invisible.

The game has a problem with difficulty being too easy, but also when you do die, it feels like you've been cheated. The lack of a save feature is really bad, and I knocked off another point for that too.

Overall the gameplay (gun balance, repetitive, easy, cheap deaths, no save feature), is the games weakest point, and the game needs to be completely redone in this aspect. The house needs to be made bigger, so the turret only covers you when the barricades are gone. The more costly the gun, the better it should be. Enemies should be more varied, and waves should come quicker. Deaths should only 3 hits or more, and a result of being swarmed by aliens. Graphics need to be optimized so it doesn't lag so heavily when you use automatic weapons. Do all of this, and change the damn text so you can actually read it, and you'll have yourself a decent game.

Currently though, its just below average for its genre.

Decent enough

But the life bar really ought to work at all. As it stands, when taking hits your life nudges down by pixels, only to completely empty on the killing blow.

Beyond that, it was a little bland. Waves came slowly, most creatures were no threat even with the base weapon in late stages, upgrades came very slowly, and were either game breaking or useless.
Things should get intense to the point that you Have to get mid range upgrades along the way, rather than just holding onto your pea shooter until you replace it with the BFG9000.
Eventually I decided just to leave the barricades broken, as it made killing things quicker and I didn't have to worry about running around fixing them every time they broke in 2 hits.

Good

ok game only a few problems the guy dies later in the game in 2 hits from a ranged unit, the second one is the turret is completely useless no range and even final turret in the later stages does not kill them at all.
Anyway i made it to wave 29 before being picked off by a ranged unit in 2 hits woooo got player lever 11 dont know what it mean but w/e

You had my attention until an enemy I couldn't see killed me in under a second. You're really going to make me start over now? I don't come here to break my back on a game. If you do that I'm just going to go play something else.
