Maybe it was used in certain situations but I don't think it was a weapon used a lot.

That just gave me visions of Germans with spears running across to the Allies and getting shot down by machine guns. Though was WW1 not special as it was the first war to have machine guns? o why have spears?

I know that cavalry were used in the attack and i find it stupid that Sir Douglas Haig (the man incharge) thought he would be able to bomb them a bit and then just charge in. That was one of the most stupid plans I have heard.

they did bomb the enemy artillary and barbed wire but the barbed wire just got even more tangled in a mess and they missed the enrmy artillary completely as it was well hidden.

Accuracy in the first world war sucked badly. Thats why the rounds were never very effective in wire clearing.

Wrong many wars before that had the gattling gun. And you have to keep in mind that the armies of old were conservative. You bought a rank. And these new toys like the tank airplane and machine gun were underrated. Or underestimated.

Plus yes they used cavalry and small spears and swords with pistols were there arms. And yes they were slaugthered. But! there was a campaign were allied cavalry broke through an Ittalion line so they still had use.

Actually he thought the barrage would wipe out the Germans so ordered his troops to walk to the trenches. And when it was obvious the plan failed and the troops were being slaughtered they weren't allowed to even charge.
