You know, I just can't wait until the old generation dies and our generation gets into the government. AM I expecting major changes? No. Do I expect at least a little bit of understanding for issues like this? Most Definitely yes... After the whole "guy threatened with 75 years in jail for recording police" and then Illinois is trying to upturn the judges decision to throw out the case, I've given up on long term understanding from out government. It's all about the money these days and trying to protect their power. I know that's not entirely it, but as soon as anyone is tempted with control, they will fight to protect it from being lost.

Who said newgrounds was a wasteland of idiocy has been proven wrong. Thanks Tom for bringing this to my attention.

Good post, Tom! Raising awareness to the one million Newgrounds users should really help stop the SOPA.

Here is what I think will happen if the bill passes:
1. Bill gets inforced.
2. Any of about 93 occur that take the bill to court.
3. The bill is deemed unconstituional.
4. Internet freed!

It could fail as major internet websites would have to rise against it. To quote Daniel Floyd "Google will certaintly have to go after it, as it effectivly shuts down youtube." (Though he was talking about a DIFFRENT censorship bill.(Like one censorship law is really any diffrent from annother))

Where does the right to freedom of speech with use of parody fall into this mess? Has there not been a precedence set for using recognizable images and public figures to speak your mind on current events?

Hang on, so China banned Newgrounds? What?

Also, I live in Australia, so I don't think I am affected. Will the SOPA affect Australia too as much as the rest of the world?

you'd obiously be affected if you go to newgrounds since they would most likely be shutdown.

China's had Newgrounds banned for quite some time now. Read up on the 'Great Firewall of China'.

Not as much as it will the US, however with many US-run sites essentially being cut off from their main consumers (and possibly their owners), those sites are likely to eventually go offline purely from losing most of their advertisement revenue and thus having their funds run dry. This is unlikely to happen to Newgrounds, however if the legislation is used to its full extent then it may, along with other sites that depend on user generated content.

What is this world coming to?
With more laws from a right wing government passing, or trying to pass laws that give massive, and easily abusive power to corporations, as well the government, in the name of protection. Protection to who? I know the citizens are being oppressed, and not protected by these laws, do you? No accountability, what about rule of law? or what about the common good. Those ideas are not even socialist, just liberal. Is it really that hard to elect a less right wing government?
Its our own fault for where the laws are going.

Capitalism has proven time and time that it DOES NOT WORK, why do we keep voting them in?
The WHOLE government has to be elected to support the people, not just a few, that is what will change this world for the better.

You dont even have to vote socialist, or liberal. At this point a welfare capitalist state would be FAR better than what we have now. At lest it is a step away from oppression.

If you disagree, please tell me the top three countries to live in, and then what there political system is. Democratic socialist. HAS Sweden ever tried to pass such devastating laws on its peoples? Only USA has, thats something to be ashamed of, how can someone even call them self an American?

The your vote made this choice, and you vote can change the laws to come.

Unfortunately, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Folks who run for the majority of political offices (in the U.S. definitely. I can't say for the rest of the countries, but I'd imagine that's how it is all over) spend hundreds of thousands of dollars campaigning for a job that has a salary that's less than that they spent. And why do they do it? Power. Power to make the rules to favor them (which is why most politicians become millionaires while in office). You actually think the higher ups will give a damn about the "little people" they once were back before reaching public office? It's a nice thought, but doubtful I'm afraid. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and we're seeing it right now.

That said, I fear for my country, and hope they (for once) hear, and listen to our voices.

Very little of content on Newgrounds is copyrighted anyway - so it really won't make any difference, like with most sites. If a website wasn't in the wrong in the first place, then they're safe; no worries.

'Very little content' is still content. Either you're chosing a horrible time to troll (if this is the case, just stop), or you're really unaware of the issue - 'very little content' would give people & corporations the right to shut a website down while bypassing due process.

IP counts as content. Not only sprite movies, but anything Mario related, for example, could easily be argued to be stolen intellectual property. Is it technically breaking the law? No, but when you bypass due process the law doesn't come into play.

That's the whole problem.

SOPA disturbs me; I've already sent a letter to my congressman demanding that this ridiculous farce be stopped before it's too late.
If it passes, you can bet I'll be leading a large protest ring.

God, you don't know how much I want to sabotage the chance of the bill passing.

I'm English, not American but that doesn't change anything at all as many famous sites are sitting in the American internet such as this one.

I don't know what else to say other than this is whole load of crap.

Tom, I'd like to personally thank you for posting. I hope those who have been here long enough notice that you normally maintain composure when posting to the front page, and that your harsh tone should indicate the seriousness of this situation.

I too am furious about standing by and watching the Constitution burn. The Internet truly is the last 'free' place on Earth, and the 'powers that be' are working tirelessly day and night to crush it. Anyone who isn't red-in-the-face mad about what is going on is either A) Not an American, so probably less concerned, or B) Not fully aware of the seriousness of this situation.

When the left and the right, the Occupiers and the Tea Partiers AGREE WITH ONE ANOTHER, you know shit has really hit the fan. When I legitimately feel threatened for speaking my mind, I know my rights are gone.

For too long we have traded freedom for safety, and as it is said, we as a people deserve neither. Political bickering, he said she said name blame game bullshit has served as a smokescreen for the deterioration of our freedoms, and it starts right here, with 'innocent' things like SOPA.

Be angry, be afraid, be something, but don't just be silent. I think people will be shocked at how fast things go down hill from here. I love this country, and when I say this country, I mean the people in it, not the government that rules over it, and I don't want to see it descend into darkness.

Educate yourselves. Watch videos, read articles, actually CHECK those sources on Wikipedia. Draw your own conclusions, and for the love of god, don't watch Fox News :P

Again, thank-you for standing up and saying something. Not just saying something, but pointing to a solution. I know all of my animations are 'fan' works of copyrighted materials. I wouldn't hesitate to delete them all in a moments notice should you take any heat for them. I quit submitting for a while due to the copyright situation, and I hope to be back again with some original work that won't put the website in jeopardy.

This very idea makes my blood boil with rage. In the country where I live, the Netherlands, something much like SOPA has already been suggested, so do not believe you're safe if you're outside America. The idea's in Europe, too.

Of course there's always the chance people aren't totally insane and this won't pass...

It doesn't stop in the USA since the Internet is world wide and the US government has tried to push these same laws upon the Swedish government aswell.
