Tom, I'd like to personally thank you for posting. I hope those who have been here long enough notice that you normally maintain composure when posting to the front page, and that your harsh tone should indicate the seriousness of this situation.

I too am furious about standing by and watching the Constitution burn. The Internet truly is the last 'free' place on Earth, and the 'powers that be' are working tirelessly day and night to crush it. Anyone who isn't red-in-the-face mad about what is going on is either A) Not an American, so probably less concerned, or B) Not fully aware of the seriousness of this situation.

When the left and the right, the Occupiers and the Tea Partiers AGREE WITH ONE ANOTHER, you know shit has really hit the fan. When I legitimately feel threatened for speaking my mind, I know my rights are gone.

For too long we have traded freedom for safety, and as it is said, we as a people deserve neither. Political bickering, he said she said name blame game bullshit has served as a smokescreen for the deterioration of our freedoms, and it starts right here, with 'innocent' things like SOPA.

Be angry, be afraid, be something, but don't just be silent. I think people will be shocked at how fast things go down hill from here. I love this country, and when I say this country, I mean the people in it, not the government that rules over it, and I don't want to see it descend into darkness.

Educate yourselves. Watch videos, read articles, actually CHECK those sources on Wikipedia. Draw your own conclusions, and for the love of god, don't watch Fox News :P

Again, thank-you for standing up and saying something. Not just saying something, but pointing to a solution. I know all of my animations are 'fan' works of copyrighted materials. I wouldn't hesitate to delete them all in a moments notice should you take any heat for them. I quit submitting for a while due to the copyright situation, and I hope to be back again with some original work that won't put the website in jeopardy.

This very idea makes my blood boil with rage. In the country where I live, the Netherlands, something much like SOPA has already been suggested, so do not believe you're safe if you're outside America. The idea's in Europe, too.

Of course there's always the chance people aren't totally insane and this won't pass...

It doesn't stop in the USA since the Internet is world wide and the US government has tried to push these same laws upon the Swedish government aswell.

If your site is based in america, they can shut it down entirely; effectively destroying life as we know it.

people please don't forget PIPA when focusing on SOPA as they are both exactly the same bills

also on a sidenote america's entertain industry's next target is paid media streaming services such as Itunes and Steam. just keep that in mind if they pass.

why am i holding a candy cane <_<

So...essentially all they are going to achieve is an humourless internet with by average 40%more porn (60% of the internet is already porn)...<---solid maths that. Dirty bastards are turning out like korea minus the dead "god like" leader (1 point to home team). wont this bill mean sites such as deviant art, media fire, soda head, damnlol etc are going to suffer?come to think of it facebook is a plethora of such "incriminating" profile pictures. What tha fuck are the government, and more importantly the president thinking!?!?!?!?!

Obviously, up the anus of whoever came up with the concept of SOPA.
they might be butt-hurt over financial loss, but just give them an inch of the ground and they'll try to control more shit than they should..just to get extra bit of profit that they initially had/recovered after block.

Living in Canada won't make much of a difference. Especially if other countries adopt this bill and start censoring their internet (more(coughcoughchina)).

Except you forgot the part where big companies like you just mentioned have the best security in the world and they will only get better security after this to prevent things like you mentioned from happening.

Hey!Think big!Think Anonymous and LulzSec.They are preety pissed of about the censorship(after all they are motivated by coruption and conspiracy on various countries)and they will probably launch an all out atack to the SOPA software storage device. They could destroy the program and stop it from spreading to Portugal or Europe and China or Corea!Listen, petitions wont cut it!What we need is for those guys to launch an all-out atack and destroy SOPA!We are Mighty,We Rule,And we are Cool!

What good is your internet when 90% of the sites you visit are not there? International NGers, you should be shitting your freakin' pants right now due to the fact that not only will it affect you equally as much as most anyone else, you have absolutely no voice in whether it passes or not. One of the more frustrating things about this is how it's an internationally significant piece of legislation being controlled solely by the USA.

NATO should be diving down our fucking throats for this, but NATO is... well, NATO. Not really the type to do much of anything.

OpenNIC is not a proxy (those are too slow), it's an open DNS server. If the only thing that gets blocked is the domain name and not the IP, then I guess using a different DNS that doesn't get affected by US law (and I guess OpenNIC is one of those) would be a nice way to get around this issue.
Even if the .com domain name gets banned, imagine the possibilities of having a newgrounds.geek or newgrounds.bbs domain name!

not only does this act remove due process it can stifle the chances for new innovations for the world it doesnt just affect americans it affects the entire world.

Essentially this comes down to copyright holders not understanding that as technology changes, so too must your business model. Rather than adapt to the times, they're trying to find ways to strongarm everyone else into doing things the way they want them done. And that's a damn shame.

A: I use images throughout the internet for my yt videos.
B: Hurt some of my songs as well (like my remixes)
C: NO MORE FUCKING MLP ON YT >:C

Yeah, this bill is as bad as the devils heart.
Fuck this bill will kill EVERYONE! Im pretty sure if it passes though, it will be swiftly removed since im sure people will be protesting the fuck out of congress and hell, anonomous will be all over the governments asses.

Btw, where the hell are they when you need them? Shouldn't they be doing something about this?

Words cannot describe how much I hate this bill.

I mean, yeah, it has good intentions, I understand. But why is it written in such a way that allows major damage to major websites? Why are the supporters of the bill so reluctant to face the criticisms and opponents instead of using it to improve on the bill? Do the people who like this bill even use the Internet?

And another thing I heard about this bill is that it was created to preserve the creativity of the industries and corporations. And if that's true, then how come the record labels/ film studios make all the money whereas the people who actually made it all possible (musicians, artists, writers, etc.) only gain a small percentage?

Even if it passes I doubt the law will last for long. The amount of people who participate in the user generated content sector of the website is extremely high, especially in the US.

If it were to pass there would be chaos.

Response to My SOPA Post 2011-12-21 13:34:43

Well said Tom. You rock.

This act will not reduce piracy, but rather give companies the power to close down any unwanted website... hell, a company might even pay someone to login to a website and upload illegal material just to shut it down.

This looks more like an infringement to the freedom of the internet; the only TRUE democratic medium.
