Family matters. In the two weeks we had to write our songs my aunt died. We had a funeral service and a house event for my cousin Andrew who no longer has a mom or a dad and has to live with his grandma. I ferried over from new york to connecticut to visit my gf for a few days. While I was home I worked my ass off landscaping and baby sitting while trying to get my college paper work in order because despite thinking I was done with school my college thinks I owe them one elective credit. Funny story, I finished my song in about the first two to three days and am already prepared for the next leg of the comp with another song and a few WIPs I'm incredibly happy with.
Now, I'm sorry to hear about your abusive step dad but you still had time to work on a song. Two weeks is an ungodly amount of time to make a song if you know what you're doing. Even if you didn't manage to make something you were happy with two weeks was plenty of time to come up with a plethora of WIPs you could have worked off of. My rule of thumb, if I work on a project and I'm not happy with it after the first few hours, I delete the project file and start a new one. That keeps things rolling forward. Sometimes I delete everything in the sequencer of an old track I was really happy with and play with the already existing sextastic instruments/ synth patches. Sometimes I force myself to work with genres I'm not personally a fan of. There are so many tactics and techniques for writing music and staving writer's block that at the end of the day the only excuse you have for not having anything is that you just didn't like what you were working on. On a really bad day, I can start three to four new songs and not be happy with any of them. But at that rate of production I'd have 21 to 28 tracks by the end of a week and at least one of them would show some sort of potential enough to finish a week later. As said by steph, you were given a massive warning about the two week time limit. This might sting a little but it's no one's fault except your own that you couldn't produce a track you were happy with in the given time. Also, this is just a friendly little meaningless competition. Relax sir :/
This is a somewhat detached idea from all that rubbish but perhaps it's time to introduce the newgrounds audio forum to the idea of hour long competitions. I remember hearing that the guys over at DNB Arena/ Lifted used to have those every now and then for shits and giggles. Basically you have an hour to make a track to the best of your ability. A day/time is agreed upon in advance. Scouts honor that it's a new project file and everyone wins experience points.
