I loved the outcome of the mission where you help the guy build his flying contraption. I just wish when you replay missions from the menu, you could choose to have all the weapons you have by the end of the game.

Isnt that the one where the guy's wife is a skeleton or something? Spooky stuff. I remember Red Dead being full of little surprises like that, I need to replay it.

Yeah and then if you revisit the guy he will invite you in to his house again and you can knock her head off. It's also one of the quests you can start as John and finish as Jack.

So I recently finished playing Journey, the game by That Game Company, which from what the credits say our very own Dan Paladin did some work on. Despite this though I thought this to be a very boring game from beginning to end. Perhaps I'm missing the message, but then again a clue here or there would help. I guess I got some clues every time I prayed at an alter and got some cryptic vague flashback, but it didn't really help.

I heard that some people can instantly pop up and help you on your journey, which is what happened to me and to be completely honest that was the best aspect of the game. I didn't know where we were going, what we were doing, or even the point of it all was, but I was enjoying this ride with this random stranger that I had never met and who had played the game before, so that was fun. However without him I probably would have just been exploring this world.

Speaking of that, this world is absolutely beautiful, it is truly one of the most breathtaking games on the PS3. With nothing really telling me much about the world or why I should give a damn though, it loses its appeal pretty quickly. The journey with a random friend is what made this game for me.

Now it is time I take my first steps into the Mass Effect world.

So what have ya'll been playing?

Max Payne 3, religiously. I played it through before some time ago but I never really paid much attention to it. It's a fantastic game.

Finally decided to go ahead and buy DayZ Standalone. I don't regret it at this point. Lots of fun to be had and fuck is it a beautiful game. Unfortunately it has some optimization issues so that frame rate can be troublesome in cities and stuff. 12fps on Very Low and Very High, like what?

It is, but there was some really annoying shit like those long ass ”skippable” but actually not until 5 seconds before it's over, bullettime being useless unless you're doing the unlimited shootdodge, hardest difficulty being locked at the start (mainly bad cause of the linear get from one unskippable cutscene to the next design). I liked it for what it was, but it's just not a traditional Max Payne game, though it obviously was going to be different being made by different devs. If you haven't played the first 2, do it. They're some of the best games ever made without the problems plaguing MP3 and a much better story/atmosphere, but the gunplay isn't as good as 3 even though the core mechanics are better.

The cutscenes are annoying as hell, especially when you're trying to do specific things in missions and have to wait 10 minutes just to go back to the menu after you've done it. It does prevent those boring load screens but it still is a pain.

Bullettime is one of my favourite things about it. When playing on hard it's difficult to get and runs out quickly so you need to make sure you're using it wisely and saving it for when you really need it, yet you have it enough of the time to be able to have fun with it.

I've seen gameplay of the old Max Payne games and actually played them long ago on PS2 with a friend, but I don't think I'd be able to go back to them, the gameplay looks incredibly outdated. I unfortunately have a big problem with playing most older games which really sucks for me because I know I'm missing out on a lot.

I don't think you understand. The game isn't really loading for very long, they just want you to watch the cutscenes. It's bullshit.

Bullettime running out quickly doesn't make you use it sparingly. It just means you'll use shootdodge instead for infinite bullettime. This is the exact opposite of the old ones which rewarded aggressiveness with bullettime.

Don't play the console versions. Play the PC versions, they're so old a toaster could run them. You could download graphics mods to make it way more bearable. They're just so much better than MP3, it'd be disgusting if you didn't play them but still liked MP3. Seriously, if you can not be a bitch about graphics and get used to playing a non-cover-based TPS without ironsights, you'll love it. MP3 is much slower paced, whereas the originals are just going and clearing shit out rambo-style.

I'll start this off by mentioning that today is my 22nd birthday.

Anyway, I got home from work today and my younger sister handed me a few presents and birthday cards from various people. One of those presents was video game related and came from my brother. When I opened it, I was pretty shocked at what I saw. A very nice condition copy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It's the limited edition version that comes with an art book and music CD. For those of you who are unaware, this is a game that's highly sought after by a lot of people and sells for a ridiculously high price. I'm amazed that he got me this. I guess I owe him something pretty spectacular for his birthday now.

You bet your ass you do. Regular Symphony of the Night is easy to get your hands on, but the limited edition with everything still intact. I envy you.

In terms of what I'm up to. My brother and friends all banded together and got me the Mass Effect Trilogy for the PS3. I have never played Mass Effect and I have heard all of the praise and hype that this series has gotten, so I have decided to keep a journal of my journeys on Tumblr. If anyone is interested in reading it.

I'm following you on Tumblr now. That is a great idea to document your journey in Mass Effect. I may begin doing that in any games I play now.

In PAL regions, even the regular Symphony of the Night isn't easy to get your hands on. In fact, the regular edition is less common but isn't as sought after because it lacks all the bonus stuff. It's a game that didn't get much of a print run in the UK and I gather it was pretty collectable soon after its release and it seems to be a game most collectors want, so the price is pretty insane.

Ordered the PS3 Uncharted games off of eBay as a bundle and annoyingly Drake's Fortune has a hairline crack in the centre of the disc. Thankfully the seller seems happy to give me a partial refund rather than make me return everything. Still slightly annoying because it means I can't start these games until I order a working copy of Drake's Fortune. Also have a copy of MGS4 on the way, which is a game I've been wanting to play for a while now.

I think I'm going to start easing off on the whole game collecting thing from here on out. I have many of the games that I originally set out to get plus many more. Part of me really wants to prune my collection so that there's nothing but great games in there but I know a lot of my shitter titles are probably worth next to nothing which makes me think selling them is a waste of time.

Yeah I only have one bad video game in my collection and that is Superman 64. It is a guilty pleasure game for me though.

I have a lot. Well, I have a lot of average games that I have no interest in playing again. Reason for this is that a large part of my collection consists of my childhood video games. I have just about every single game I've ever bought still in my collection. A good chunk of my PS2 games are probably FPS games because back then that's what I was into. Now, not so much. My current plan is to just pull all the mediocre stuff off my display shelf and store them away elsewhere. That way I'll free up some space for other stuff to go on the shelf.

It's my goal of 2014 to end the year with a positive progress index on backloggery. Currently I'm at -7 but that'll go to -11 when the 3 games I currently have ordered arrive. So basically, in order to get it to +1 I need to beat 12 games this year. Well, more than that if I buy more games. Since I started using backloggery I haven't had a positive progress index at the end of any year. 2012 I ended on -70, 2013 I ended on -61. That's really bad.

So far I've only beaten the two games since the start of the year; The Last of Us and Uncharted. Might be quite hard to end on a positive index though because most of the games I want to play are JRPGs and we all know how long they can take to beat. Doesn't help that I have a lot less free time these days either.

I'm shooting for finishing more than 20 games in 2014 (beating my 2013 score). Thus far I'm well on track; I already got 4 games down along with 4 DLC packs.

I'd also like to play more classic NES and SNES games this year. Especially with SNES games I feel like I've really missed out on something during my childhood.

Yea I'm actually kinda surprised at that myself. I should have thought to include the image though.

Hopefully I don't end up adding too many new games to my collection this year. Aside from the games I currently have ordered, I'm mostly just hoping to get Tales of Symphonia: Chronicles and Ni No Kuni. Maybe the Final Fantasy X remaster. I'm sure more games will catch my attention at some point but we'll see.

I'very been playing a lot of Hearthstone recently now that it's open beta. I had some reservations about playing a CCG in electronic form, but I think works. CCGs were pretty much the original pay-to-win genre so the microtransactions don't bother me, but now if you don't want to dish out cash matchmaking can set you up with people who have the same commitment level as you.

You can't replace the feeling of actually sitting across from someone and staring the down to read their next move in their eyes, but it's still fun.

I played it during the closed beta and I enjoyed it quite a lot but you are right, there is nothing better than staring your opponent down trying to guess their next move.

So I cleaned out my game shelf recently. Mentioned it in a previous post, probably. I'm pretty much at the point now where I only have good games on my shelf. So hopefully if I were to pick a game at random, it'd be something I enjoy playing.

I've put together a list of what's left, if anyone is curious:

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/b98e6f2c67a9c3d04400401e91916349

I didn't get rid of all my other games, just stored them away since they're unlikely to get much use and are probably worth so little that I'd rather not sell them.

Quite a few games on my shelf are still games I've yet to play. Been trying to spend more time gaming as of recent but working 9-5 makes me feel like I don't have a great deal of time to play games.

ohh myyy. you have quite the collection there, dean! why i do not even own a master system or mega drive game, and i find that cool having old gems.

work is always a time constraint, i know that feeling. but hey! that is just how it goes. whatever down time you have to yourself, schedule around. when you are not meeting up with pals or attending to other matters, just grab something off that shelf and unwind.

smash bros party

lately i have been brushing up on my smash bros from the first to brawl. well actually, i should be but i have been lazy. a couple of friends have arranged for a smash bros tourney sometime in the next week or so and i will be there. a friendly gameup of sorts, with folks from in town and outside of town driving down. i say a couple but i expect like fifteen people at the least to show for this. we are holding it in a friend's house so the whole lot of us will be crowding in one house to play smash bros. oh, baby.

on top of that we can just hang and party it up, and i am so excited for it!

This thread hasn't been seeing a lot of activity lately. What are you guys up to that's gaming related?

I've been going through one of those phases where I'm struggling to stay motivated with games, although I think I'm starting to recover from that. I was playing Ni No Kuni, which is a game that I really want to love but I'm struggling. Studio Ghibli have done a fantastic job with the art direction in that game. It's just so nice to look at. What's throwing me off the game though is the party member AI.

I'm not even that far into the game (currently fighting the alchemy pot boss) but I find myself getting frustrated during boss battles because the AI just wastes all their MP shortly followed by getting themselves killed. I know you can switch tactics but the selection I have available doesn't seem to make much of a difference. It's a shame the game is like this because I reckon I'd enjoy this game considerably more if it took a more traditional turn based approach, rather than me having to depend on AI to aid me with the battles.

I did beat Arkham Origins the other day which rekindled my interest in gaming again. Wasn't sure what to expect from that game given that I've heard a lot of moaning about how buggy and broken it is, which aside from the occasional issue, I didn't really experience. I thought it was just more Arkham fun. Really enjoyed this series so far.

From there I started playing 3D Dot Game Heroes on PS3. Really fun game worth checking out if you're into old Link to the Past style action RPGs. It feels like an old game that has been brought into modern times, but it does still suffer from some of the frustrations that games from the era it's imitating had. Will hopefully get this one beaten by the end of next week, depending how much time I'm able to sink into it.

Recently I've also been debating whether or not I want to try and get back into handheld gaming. Nintendo's Gameboy Color and GBA SP were big parts of my youth, especially because of Pokemon. Even though I haven't played a Pokemon game in years, I still have fond memories of Yellow and Silver version. Back then I always imagined that Pokemon would end up on a console and have 3D graphics. I guess Pokemon X and Y is half-way there and the kid in me really wants to re-visit this series and see what it's like these days. Problem is, I don't own a 3DS but I've decided to change that.

Was having a look to see what games the 3DS has available and there's actually quite a few that interested me so I bit the bullet and ordered myself a 3DS XL, along with Pokemon Y, Ocarina of Time 3D, A Link Between Worlds and Animal Crossing. Hopefully all that should arrive tomorrow if Amazon Prime delivers next day, as advertised. I'm really hoping these games take me back to gaming as I remember it years ago. Back when I'd sink god knows how many hours into something like Pokemon Silver and then go back and replay it multiple times. I rarely find myself doing that any more. In fact, I can't even think of the last time I enjoyed a game so much that I had to go back and experience it a second time. A lot of the time I seem to find myself trudging through games just for the sake of saying I've beaten them. I think that's part of the problem that's been making me lose interest in gaming. I've just not been having fun with the games I play. I play them for the sake of beating them, not because I want to enjoy playing them. I'm hoping that little selection of 3DS games will change that, because they all seem like games I'd have played to death when I was younger. I just hope age wont make me find them less enjoyable.

Although Animal Crossing seems like a bit of a weird game for me to by buying. I'd have had no interest in that game at all if my brother and sister hadn't shown the Wii and DS games a few years back. In theory it sounds like such a shit game but when you play it, it's actually quite fun. I don't even know what it's fun. If you were to explain to someone what it is you do in Animal Crossing, it sounds pretty boring. So why is it so entertaining?

Anyway, this post is considerably longer than I thought it was going to be. Just wanted to bump the thread and try to spark some discussion. Just hope my wall of text hasn't scared people away.
