Reviews for "Blake Strongflank Escapes"

Hey, fun platformer, quite challenging (at least in 509 and a couple more.) For those having problem with 509 (SPOILER):

For some reason the game forbids you to wall jump off the left side of the first ledge, if you have reached it wall jumping from the eastern most wall. To reach the left side, and still be able to jump off it, you must have jumped from the right side of the ledge, not from the eastern most wall.
That's a bit tricky, actually. I'll try to explain it step by step.

1- Wall jump off the ledge and the easternmost wall. You should try to get, with the last wall jump, on the right side of the ledge, just below the red point on the tip.

2- While jumping this last jump, KEEP THE LEFT KEY PRESSED.

3- As soon as you reach the right side of the ledge, just below the red point on the tip, press the right key once, BUT KEEP THE LEFT KEY PRESSED.

4- You should somersault over the ledge. Now, press the right key as you fly over it. Try to reach the left side of the ledge, without touching the red tip. It's quite difficult, and I admit I did it by luck.

5- Wall jump off the left side of the ledge. It should work.

6- Use your air jump (you still have it, if you followed my instructions and didn't make any mistakes) to reach the westernmost ledge.

7- Jump off the western most ledge, and to the middle ledge.

8- Jump off the middle ledge, and reach for the sky!

Awesome explaination of the solution to 509. Couldn't have put it better myself!

Thanks for sharing!

EDIT: The logic was built so you can't do two left or right walljumps in a row. Essentially you have to alternate between sides. I didn't want it so you could vertical climb a wall just by hugging it and tapping walljumps over and over. That's why you can't jump off te right wall and then off the left side ofthe bar. Hope that helps.

So many BUGS... when I jump on a platform sometimes the character passes through it, and same happens with the floor itself. I must have to press R once and again... that's irritating... Please, XIT IT, the game needs it.

almostnot responds:

Hey, thanks for taking the time to feedback but I've never come across those bugs myself. Can you let me know what browser and OS you're using so I can try to replicate it?

Also, what's "XIT IT"?

Thanks!

:D

Nicely made minimalist. My only problem is the double jump is a little bugged. About 20% of the time the double jump would get used up if your first jump was too close to the edge of the floor you are jumping from. Made it really tedious when you should easily have made a jump, but didnt because you had no double jump available. Fix this and maybe add some story and it will be perfect.

Hey, thanks for playing!

It's not quite a bug, I think it may be to do with latency of keyboard commands. What actually happens is that it records your press of the jump button when you have stepped off the platform. You can test this by standing still on the very very very edge and you will still be able to double jump.

From a usability point of view I'm going to try building in a buffer that stops this from happening but the important thing will be to get the balance right so it's not too forgiving.

Because forgiveness is for over the shoulder shooters :D

Pretty good. 50X levels are cruel. Especially 509 it's pretty much pixel perfect. Yet 510 was much easier.

almostnot responds:

The whole of 50X was always designed to be super punishing. I'm thinking of adding in a nightmare mode that is even tougher!

Take the feedback on 509.

Thanks for playing! :D

Well, it's another parkour game, but it works very well, so it's good. Graphics are minimalistic, but not that bad. I do love the tense music, I like how each section of the game has its own song.

As for gameplay, like I stated before, it's basically a parkour game, with wall jumps and double jumps. As generic as this may sound, though, I really like this game for its stage design, which actually demands thinking rather than just doing the obvious quickly enough, like most parkour games out there. The difficulty curve scales almost perfectly as well.

Another thing I like about this game is how simple the wall jump controls are, you just tap the direction you want to jump to, and off you go. In most parkour games I know, in order to grapple to the wall, you need to hold the button corresponding to the direction of the wall, but in order to wall jump, you have to press both the opposite direction and the jump button at the same time, which often results in either pressing the jump button too early, therefore not going to the side on time, or pressing the side button too early, therefore ruining the wall jump and falling down. If only more games did the wall jumping like this one, I'd be happy.

One problem I found is that the double jumping seems buggy. Sometimes I finish landing on a platform, but when I jump, it counts as a double jump, and I lose my capability of extending my jump. It doesn't happen so often, but it does bug me when it does.

Also, the hit detection on lava displeases me. It shouldn't be "touch the lava and die", it should be "get into the lava and die", unless those blocks weren't intended as lava, of course.

All things considered, as generic as this game's concept sounds, it's still pretty enjoyable, and a brain teaser in certain regards as well. Good job.
