Reviews for "Gyossait"

Wow

A very amazing game, from start to finish

You know,

There's a reason I try not to review games; because my reviews suck ass. However, this game compelled me to do so. I have no idea what I just played. I think this game ate my soul. Although, it is well made, and I shouldn't judge a game on whether or not it damned me to hell. So I chose to give it a 4 out of 5.

Have sadness and happiness ever got along so well?

In terms of design, this game surely deserves a full 10 out of 10. The goth style from the graphics, music, sound effects and, of course, theme, could teach a thing or two even to famous series such as Castlevania (although, the atmosphere from this game felt a bit too heavy for comercial games, but I digress). Let's move to the score, shall we?

Graphics - 9.5/10: the graphics were pretty nice, reminiscent of old school game as stated in some reviews before. The choice for extremely small sprites for the characters would normally be an eyesore, but they fit well in the game and were more than compensated by the outstanding pixel art seen in bigger objects such as bosses and the intro. I only wish some of the text was easier to read, I couldn't pick everything that was written across the stages.

Sound - 8/10: the music was nearly perfect (actually, hearing to the credits song while tying this was pretty refreshing). However, the screams (especially female ones) could have been quieter to avoid some "ear rape", I wasn't even using good earphones and had my volume turned pretty low, but those sounds hurt my ears a little bit, nothing severe though, and certainly worthy the enjoyment I got in the game.

Gameplay - 7/10: the major complaint I got in this section is mostly due to my own fault. It's been a while since I played a platformer and, because of that, I found myself dying a lot at the start, especially due to the strong inertia in some jump stages. However, the overall layout of the stages was pretty good, quite challenging and there was even space for some puzzle here and there (nothing too difficult, though).

Design - 10/10: the design of the game may seen extremely disturbing at first sight, and you might even find yourself thinking "what kind of disturbed mind could have created such a thing?", but as you play more and start to see how deep are the emotions behind all aspects of the game, you finaly realise how beautifuly it all fits in together.

Story - 10/10: I don't mean to be disrespectful by calling this an art game. Many people often complain about many aspects of art games, but this is an extremely good exception. The game had an unnusual way to tell its story, which was poetic, dark, mysterious and immersive. This was, certainly, the best aspect of the game, and honestly, after a certain stage where you first get your gun, I never expected the game would end like it did.

Well, after saying all this, let me finish off by congratulating you, Amon, for an extremely well done job. This probably isn't a game for everyone, and probably isn't the "scary fun" you can find in most halloween releases, but Gyossait is more beautiful and deeper than everything I ever saw on Newgrounds. Kudos and may God bless you, sir (and anyone pacient enough to read this foolish and long review).

it was a little difficult

it made my spine chill and my teeth chatter fucking awesome

Bug or intended?

Apparently you're supposed to use the gun to kill your the bride, but I died, did it over, and then died again and now I can no longer get the gun.
