just to jump in here for a sec...im bi my gf knows and doesnt trip...as far as hell, im going there for things i did WAY before i was bi....

i mean hell the only reason i am bit is because to be honest i didnt see the big deal of people bashing others for being gay and i wanted to see what was so fun or whatever about being gay so i rang up a friend who is gay and asked him to let me do him... i liked it and have been ever since...still dont see the big deal really...and as far as "god" is concerned, i dont think he would condemn people for being gay...i mean in the end he wants us to be happy right? be true to ourselves...so y would he be mad.......?

So I read an Australian article recently which said Gay people smoked a lot more than straight people, which from my experience didn't at all surprise me. I can't find that particular article, but when looking for it I found many more such as this one from a few years back saying:

About 14 percent of Californians smoke, according to a 2005 Department of Health Services survey released in April. But in a 2004 state survey, more than 30 percent of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people were smokers.

Does that come as a surprise to anyone? Thoughts, opinions?

But anyway, I'm gonna make huge leaps of logic based on generalizations, but bear with me: Most smokers start young, usually underage. There are very few who actually start smoking when it's legal for them to do so, and for a good reason, adults know better. Now, another study has shown that gay teenagers are ore likely to get a girl pregnant, and lesbian teenagers are more likely to get pregnant, because queer teens try hard to assert being heterosexual. I would guess that the same preassure to assert ones masculinity is also somewhat accountable for the larger amount of smokers.

But then again, it could just be a statistical anomaly; when 5-10% of the population is LGBT, the difference to the general population doesn't need to be that big to already stand out.

My only idea is that because the large amount of conflict during teenage years, it creates stress. This may then lead to smoking due to stress relief, conformity/finding acceptance (through finding a common ground with others) and depression where they smoke because they know it's destroying them. Plus among male homosexuals, there is also the idea they should stay in shape which may include smoking to quiet down the hunger drive. While lesbians, some stay in touch with their feminine side and try to keep into shape via smoking, while smoking also can be seen as somewhat masculine and an act a butch lesbian may take up.

There's a lot of generalisations, but if the statistic is significant, then some questions need to be raised.

Derp, silly me. I forgot to check back on this. Yes, cigarettes is what I am/the statistics are referring to. I don't know of any statistics about illegal drugs and the gay community, though there is that stereotype of gays taking lots of drugs and partying.. that's another topic though.

But why I brought it up is because I found it incredibly relevant to my local gay community. You walk past any gay bar here on a weekend night and you're guaranteed to have at least 5 people outside smoking, and you walk past any other bar/club and there will only be the occasional one or two.

I would, but I couldn't keep doing that without getting extremely pissed off and frustrated. I HATE those kinds of "christians". My best friend in the world is Christian, but she respects my beliefs and we've never fought about it and neither of us ever tell the other they're wrong or sinful or whatever.

Exactly. I'm really lucky, I grew up in an atheist home so my parents didn't really care that I'm bisexual. And my school has plenty of open gays and bisexuals and the community is generally acceptive of us other than the ghetto black people.

It is true though. While I believe there most likely is a god, it's shit like that which makes me just push religion away. Banning gay marriage is one thing. I disagree with that, but atleast it's debatable. Making homosexuality a crime is just stupid. I'm surprised Texas schools don't have a 1.3 GPA.
