Well good luck, I'm sure they will come out great.

I modified the first one a bit to make these. I'm having a problem though... In the MML series, the servbots have a tendency to cry when yelled at. I have the squiggly mouth done, but I can't seem to get the crying right. (The sprite is the farthest down on the right)

And you win the Captain Obvious Award! ;) Thanks for the recap, but PBX already told us that himself by saying, "I recolored every single sprite, then put my custom shades on 'em." You can find it on page 137.

Well DUH. I was just making a STATEMENT.

[Provides link to various sprite sheets]
First off, make a reference to the top six moves on the Link sheet telling people you didn't make those since Kaosboy found those on the net for you (your thread, 4th post down). If you want folks to show you the respect of not ripping off your stuff, you have to do the same for others.

...Hello??? It's clear that I custom-made some of the sprites, based on the exact same sheet that your friend found. Sheesh. Where the hell did I write on that sheet "Property of NazelbikAuthor"?

:Overall, the sheets aren't too shabby. The color choices are nice. I know you prefaced your entry by saying you didn't create a lot of moves for your characters, but you should still try some action poses for all the sprites whose base sprite didn't provide one.

You're right. However, most of them are purely scratched, so I like to think that they are no "easy to do" edits.

:Right now, they're a bit too static and don't offer much visual excitement. The shading on the hair of the tall red-headed guy is excellent...

Thank you.

:...but you'll want to carry that method over to the guy with the grey hair. He wouldn't have such a strong highlight over the entire top of his hair. If that's his base color, then you should throw in a highlight to make his hair look less flat and uniform.

No... you don't understand. I MADE him that way. That's his hairstyle, what can I say.

:You've proven you can do a good job with shading so try and stay away from using black as your holding line for the larger sprites. Use darker shades of your base color on the outlines. It'll make your sprites look smoother and less amateurish. The black you've used on the tiny sprites works because you have a smaller area to make things pop so black cuts to the chase better.

Yes, I already know. I used blacklines because I wasn't convinced darker shades of color would look better.

:One last thing, on your sprites on the left, they're too out of proportion. The torsos are much too long which makes the legs look too short by comparison. If you cut out about a 3 pixel high section from the torso and arms, you should have a better proportion. Again, overall, not too shabby. With a little more work, you should be producing natural looking sprites in no time.

I know this isn't very impressing, but I can do anything on request.
Never show something unless you have confidence in it. With your first post here, you tried to allude to the idea that you were a good sprite artist when you called PBX on the carpet by stating the obvious; that's not a very good first impression. Then you showed us your stuff. It's pretty good, but it seems after the somewhat cool reception you received, now you're trying to backpedal by saying, "this isn't very impressing". Why don't you show us the stuff that is impressive so you can back up your claim, "I'm a good sprite artist." Also, you're not ready to offer "I can do anything on request" just yet. You've still got some work to do on anatomy, action and outline blending. Keep practicing.

When I read this... It almost sounds like an insult, but I guess you're only trying to give a good critic. But there's something bothering me : Who are you to criticize so much?

Who are you to criticize PBX, and claim yourself "a good sprite-artist"?
That pretty much sounded like you proclaiming yourself a superior artist than us.
If so, you have no reason to practice, and no reason to be here.

I know the sprite isn't something you're dedicating your time to, but if you had put a bit of red in the outfit, it would have balanced a bit better. Other than that, it looks slick.

That's a good idea. I ink the pictures I scan because when I shrink it down, the sketches tend to get too muddy and hard to decipher.

NazelbikAuthor

At 8/11/04 02:12 PM, NazelbikAuthor wrote: Well DUH. I was just making a STATEMENT.

Please don't hide behind that excuse; it's too thin. There's a difference between a statement and an implication. You offered nothing else in your statement other than a derisive note. You found no need to comment on his excellent color choices for shading or how well he animated it in a later post. This is a positive arena with varying degrees of talent. Not one of us does or has the right to look down our nose at the work of others. We offer encouragement and advice. If you don't have those things to contribute, I kindly ask you not to post here again.

(In reference to using someone else's unedited Link sprites on his sheet) It's clear that I custom-made some of the sprites, based on the exact same sheet that your friend found. Where the hell did I write on that sheet "Property of NazelbikAuthor"?

On that page where the sheet appears, you did wrote "Sprites by NazelbikAuthor-Do not steal" and permutations of that warning 4 times! That sounds like "Property of NazelbikAuthor" to me, yet not once did you give credit to whoever created those 6 Link sprites. By saying nothing, you're guilty of allowing people to assume those are your sprites. Why did you do that which you so strongly warn against?

(About not putting his original sprites in action poses) ... most of them are purely scratched, so I like to think that they are no "easy to do" edits.

But if you're as good as you say you are, they shouldn't be that difficult.

(About the grey-haired sprites hair being too flat) No... you don't understand. I MADE him that way. That's his hairstyle, what can I say.

Then you need to learn a bit more about light source, shading and hair texture. The hair, as it is now, looks like a helmet sitting on his head.

(About using black holding lines) I used blacklines because I wasn't convinced darker shades of color would look better.

That's purely a style issue. While black linework tends to make the characters 2-D and too simplistic, it's not unheard of to use. It is a bit telling of the spriter's limited abilities and I thought you'd like to be viewed better than that.

(About showing admittedly unimpressive work and being ready to claim to be able to make a sprite out of anything) It almost sounds like an insult, but I guess you're only trying to give a good critic.

Honestly, my only intent is to be a good critique. I always try to be thorough and honest. I'm a bit blunt at times, but I get my point across.

there's something bothering me : Who are you to criticize so much?

This year will mark 30 years I've been drawing. In 2 years, I will have worked off and on in the visual entertainment arena for a decade. To name only a few things - my latest work will be printed in "Ripperman", a comic from Chanting Monks Press; I've been the "script doctor" for the last two Jon Pay comics from BDP; I have work published in a rock 'n' roll poster book called Electric Frankenstein; I've done ad work for Tom Mandrake's comic series Creeps from Image; I'm currently a successful freelance Flash animator / writer / cartoonist and I used to teach cartooning and visual storytelling. I've got a lot of experience, I've made all the common mistakes (and have invented a few!) and I will always have something new and amazing to learn about art that I'm willing to share.

Did you customize one of the new Megaman sprites PBX showed you to make Rockman? If so, check out the shading MM has and use it as a guide for your own shading. It looks like RM would have a green palette, so wherever MM has dark blue, use dark green; light blue, light green and so on. Since the bandages on his hands and arms are white, you'll want to use a grey palette. A good rule of thumb is to use 3 to 4 tones of the same color. Your first tone will be the highlight, your second tone is the main color, the third tone is your shadow (and outline if only using 3) and the fourth tone is your outline and deep shading. Now, depending on some pieces, almost any one of those tones can be part of the outline at any given time. It really depends on what you want the final outcome to look like. Study the MM sprite sheets you've found and see how they do it. Good luck!

RockLee-: That's a good idea! Thanks for the help. I'll show you a new and improved Rock Lee soon. And i'll post a buddy of his too. His name is Gaara ^_^. I started him and im gonna try that shade idea =) Thanks!!!

I agree, maybe I should make myself the captian

Good on ya! ;)

Is the artist thing a lucrative line of work?

For me, yes, when I'm working. Usually when Sept. / Oct. rolls around, work stops dead until Jan. since most businesses are in the year-end financials mode. When Jan. finally hits, work floods in again.

I want to be a history teacher but i LOVE the whole animation thing.

No one says you can't do both. You may not be doing animation on a grand level while being a history teacher (I think that's SO cool!), but you could always do it on the side thanks to Flash! :)

Is the animation your main source of money (if thats too personal a question you don't have to answer)

That's not a personal question ... how much I make is! ;) No, it's not our main source of income. We could live comfortably off what I make, but it'd take a great deal of creative book keeping to see us through Sept. - Dec. I'm very fortunate to have a wife who is smart with money (I burn through it like crap through a goose!) and who has a great career she thoroughly loves. My paycheck augments her income. We use it as our vacation fund. We'll be hitting Florida again this year (Oct.) and next year we'll be going to London, Hong Kong and, hopefully, Scotland. I have to pay for myself and for all the swag and food I buy since she goes on the company dime. I'm also very fortunate to have the clients I have. They always pay on time and keep me nice and busy from Jan. to Sept. / Oct.. So, the basic rule in our house is: living expenses = her income; vacations, gifts & recreation = my income. It kind of makes sense since I draw funny pictures for a living. ;)

i'd be honered to have you look over the script when it is finished.

Great! Now all I've got to do is learn how to read! ;) Seriously though, I'm looking forward to it.

it looks like missed a small war!

Don't worry, it's not a war. It's simply a clarification of intentions. We're all good here.

Understand, I'm a big proponent of fair play and giving credit where it's due. Though it may be public domain, someone else worked hard on those sprites and should be given the credit just as you should be for coming up with the bow pulling sprites. You're not saying no one can use them, but you'd be giving the nod to whoever inspired you to carry on with those sprites.

Yes, I like to say I'm good at spriting, it's normal. When you say you have 30 years of experience in drawing, doesn't it make you proud?

But it's coming across as pompous. It's great to think you're good, but you don't need to announce it. Trust me, people will let you know how good you are. ;) I'm proud of my work and experience and I'm confident in my abilities, but it really doesn't mean a thing if I'm not pleasing my audience or a paying client. If I don't land a job I'm up for, thinking I'm the best thing since sliced bread isn't gonna ... well ... buy me bread! ;)

When I looked at it, like you, I noticed the legs were a little off, but I wasn't exactly sure why and couldn't offer a suggestion on how to fix it. I opened it in Photoshop, selected the foreleg and slightly rotated it clockwise at the hip. As I rotated it, the angle of the foot appeared more natural. If you nudged the angle on the foreleg like that, whichever way is available to you in Paint, you may get a better result. Good luck!
