So do you know why all the stuff on my iPod would take up 9 giga bits?

hmm, i'm not sure - check for sure via itunes and windows explorer you haven't got anything you forgot you put on, otherwise it could just be a fuck up on apples part.
if you're that annoyed by it then restore your ipod and see if the missing GB's come back

My ipod video is 29.3gb i think.
No, when I turned it on for the very first time, it said it had 111.145 (or something) free GB. That's a pretty big gap, in my opinion.
It's part of the design by the looks of it.

Mm. Whatever. I wasn't complaining, because it's unlikely that I will ever fill up all that space. I was just curious as to why that much space was missing.

9GB though? seems VERY odd that a portable device' OS would take up that much space, it's not like they're running vista on there.

That's why. Especially because the applications on the 120 GB iPod shouldn't be different from ones on, say a 32 GB nano, but I guarantee that if 9 GB were missing there something would be done.
It's actually apple taking advantage of confusion between 120,000,000,000 bytes and 128849018880 bytes, or 120GB, to try and make their HDD sound bigger.. (one kilobyte is 1024 bytes, and one megabyte is 1024 kb, and one gigabyte is 1024 mb, due to the way binary works).
120 billion bytes...
that's 117187500kb
that's 114440mb
that's 111.75gb

that's 111.75gbli call for false marketing.
They say 120 Gigabytes, and a gigabyte can mean either, in strict computing sense it should be 2^30 that's (1024^3), however in SI units, giga means 1,000,000,000, so 120 gigabytes is completely fine and legal.
The term for 2^30 is the Gibibyte.
Don't blame apple, they're not the only ones doing it. It's standard procedure in the industry. For example, this is my hard drive, a 320GB hard disk.
It has 320,062,062,592 bytes of space, or 298 Gibibytes, or either 320 or 298 Gigabytes of space.

Guh. Well, that blows.

Yeah. Just because it's being done elsewhere doesn't make it suck less.

Boo-hoo. I lost 9GB on a 120 GB ipod. My life is over. Where will I put all of my music?!?!
Seriously, even if you have that much music, you can't listen to all of it. There's some you get sick of, or maybe even some you don't even know what it is. For the former, just get rid of it. For the latter, listen to it, and then make a decision on whether to get rid of it or not.
I think...I hate... dick.
