BLAMS! 2002-10-24 12:50:02

We have made some changes to the Portal voting system. We have increased the first quality check point to 50 votes, instead of 25. So a movie will not be BLAMMED until 50 votes, if the score is low enough. Remember to always view a movie before you vote. This is only fair to those who took time to make something to contribute to Newgrounds. If you vote 0 or 5 without watching you may end up not getting a point! Remember, it is in your best interest to get as many of each type of point as possible, not just one or the other. So don't rely on a submission's current score to determine your vote. If you do, you may get burned! Especially new movies that don't have many votes yet. This is a critical time and extra care is needed to view the movie and make a good decision on if you think the movie will be BLAMMED or PROTECTED. Also learn to realize when a movie will be protected and has very little chance of being BLAMMED. When you can determine this you do not have to feel obligated to vote 5 to ensure a PROTECTION point. You could vote 2, 3, 4, or 5 depending on how good you think the submission is and still get a PROTECTION point.

Also we changed the color codes. So a movie with 3.00 or higher is GREEN, and a movie with a 3.50 or higher is BLUE.

The colors come after a movie has 100 votes.

LOVING all these changes Wade. But I really suck at getting this system down. I'm gonna be a citizen fo' life!!!!!!!!! How in the hell do these people have thousands of points already??? Am I missing something?

Sounds good to me. maybe this might save some people's movies. I mean people have become blam crazy. two days ago 625 movies were blammed and yesterday 300+. I think this change might save some movies.

Just keep watching the TOP 50 and watch all the new submissions that come in, and then cast your vote. Some people had over 1,000 BLAMS before we released the new system, so they had a huge head start. Some people are just more aggressive. They are searching through older submissions and finding entries that only need a couple more votes to either be BLAMMED or PROTECTED. They usually work in groups so they can all cast enough votes to get some of these older movies to reach 100 votes, or be blammed. That's why we're seeing 625 movies blammed in a single day. :) Eventually they will run out of older movies to vote on and have to just wait for whatever come into the TOP 50 each day. So just keep plugging away. We didn't design the rank system to give out promotions every day. :) You need to work at it. You should be able to get up to Safety Patrol or Portal Security if you vote on 10-15 movies a day for a week or two.

Yeah, I tried voting(fairly) on old movies but they were either just past the cutoff point or nowhere near. Shit, I need to join the Clock Crew or something. Okay, maybe that's taking too freakin' far. Jackass: The Movie in theaters tomorrow!!!!!!

Any info going to be given out on what amounts you need to get to a new level with the protection/blams, or how the two numbers are pooled together to give you a general point? Other than me being confused by how it works, I like it.

It's simple, BLAM POINTS + PROTECTION POINTS = TOTAL POINTS = RANK.

2+2 = 4

The first few ranks come every 100 points, then every 500, 1000, 1500, etc.

We might put up a chart since some people have already found the other badges. Rat bastards! :) We were planning on taking more effort to keep them secret, but we didn't get around to it.

Where do people find old movies to vote on?

Response to BLAMS! 2002-10-24 14:24:04

Great innovations. I'm glad that the first check point has moved up to 50 votes. It'll be fairer to the movie/game now.

Before this new system was implemented I never saw that there were more votes then views but it is a common occurrence now. I would suggests making it so you can¡¦t see what score a movie has until it has a least 50 votes. That way people would HAVE to watch to see weather it would be blamed or protected. This would make at least the first votes more fair and in a lot of cases there the most important ones as they set the president for all people who vote without viewing first.

I think this is a good idea, movies were getting blamed within 5 mins and sometimes were not given a chance to be viewed.

ya i love the new system. I just hope that all of the previous 60,000 submissions can get cleaned or protected as well

Not a bad idea, but no. What I was saying was if you vote on something without watching it, you may vote wrong and end up not getting a point. Like you see a movie with a score of 0.5 and 3 views so you just vote 0. Then you come back and see it's a 3.5 with 40 views! Ooops! Then you watch it and see it's really cool! Doh!

I've seen the new Ranks, but Wade I've got a question. Are there 26 Ranks or 30? I've seen about 26 of them but not the other 4 (if they exist)

Response to BLAMS! 2002-10-24 16:27:11

well, i must say: protection points are MUCH easier to get than blam points. dont the majority of mvoies entering the portal remain? also, the whole protection point system is breeding a new level of crap in the portal. may i call your attention to a submission entitled "jugs." it has a preloader for 3 porn pics. that is the entire movie. and what is the first review written for it? "i feel like getting a protection point." the author votes himself a 5, and everyone else viewing the movie sees "wow, it has a 5 already, i better vote high to get that protection point!" and thus, crap is staying.

Response to BLAMS! 2002-10-24 17:20:07

The voting system gets better and better, and while someone may try to find a loophole, at least I think these kinds of things diminishes everytime the system improves.

Imagine, a perfect voting system so accurate that other websites may want to try to impliment a similar system.

Well, 'nuff random thoughts.

How do you create all those movies? Can you give me a site? I kinda tried Flash MX and I couldn't even get the file to start downloading! It is just way too big. Do you have any ideas? And are you guys looking for staff? I maybe can help.

This will just slow down all the crap being deleted, keeping it on for longer, what's the point of this? Getting an established score before getting blammed?

It might keep things on slightly longer, but the point is this: People are still voting early on in a movies' life in the Portal without actually viewing the movie. If a big (in terms of file size) movie enters the Portal, some users vote low on the movie purely on that basis - they're on a slow connection and rather than move on and find a movie that won't take an eon to download, they figure that the movie's crap and will vote low. This starts off a trend of low voting and might ultimately end in the movie being deleted at 25 votes - even if the movie's actually pretty good.

By upping the votes to 50 for the first blam checkpoint, the greater the chance of some advanced member who's willing to wait for the movie to load or someone who's using a fast connection to come and give the movie the vote it deserves increases. Therefore, good movies that have been given an unfair start by someone impatient have more time to settle out in the score average - and might ultimately get some sort of feature or even wind their way into the top 50 of all time list.
