It's large. Obviously not a major factor, no, but just pointing out that any assistance of the homeless by the church is easily cancelled out by mentioned cause.

Refusing contraception, birth control, or any form of planned pregnancy.

They're always doing bad. And the amount of good they do is totally overblown by the amount of bad they do and the amount of secular good that is done.

Talking strictly about what I was talking about last page: The US used to be the largest and most effective donor of contraception to impoverished nations, but then Christians in the government pressured the US to stop sending them because of "moral" reasons, and now instead send over missionaries to teach them abstinence programs, which are entirely ineffective.

The catholic church has even launched propaganda campaigns saying that condoms are deliberately infected with aids or that they don't work.

Not only does this do nothing to stop the spread of AIDS, but it also does nothing to stop the sky rocketing overpopulation problems in places such as Africa.
In fact, the population there is increasing so quickly that thousands upon thousands of acres of forests and being burned down for the land, which causes many, many plant and animal species to become endangered or extinct, and is estimated to release 5 billion tonnes of greenhouse gasses per year. That's over a quarter of the world's total emissions.

But I guess, if a church starts an orphanage, we can forget all about the aforementioned problems.

lol that's not the half of it. I was another website where someone asked what created humans and a woman posted that there was no evidence for evolution because she "learned" about it from highschool.

Silly people say silly things sometimes.

It's my birthday on the 29th. I don't know what to think, should I be excited or shouldn't I care?

Response to The Atheist Army 2008-03-12 19:49:02

Why shouldn't you care?
It's your birthday :P

Yeah but I don't see the point in celebrating the anniversary of my birth. If anything we should celebrate everyday of life but we don't.

Who cares whether you're excited about being one year older; the point has never been to celebrate ageing but to celebrate being alive, by getting off your nut with your friends. I always enjoy the opportunity, even if I'm not that pleased about the age.

Teens4christ is a really scary website with Christians crawling all over the place... lol. Seriously: It seems to be a BBS (or forum if ye want) where Christianity is in the center.

That teens4christ sounds like an automatic pissoff.

1. How is it that if matter can't be created or destroyed, (by the second law of thermodynamics) that matter in the beginning of time came to existance from nothing without the help of something/someone not bound by the physical universe?

you asked the same question and I already answered it.

2. Why do humans have emotions?

Socialisation between creatures, prevention of harm and effects due to reactions from our senses.

3. If you believe in evolution, how is it that if thing are in a constantly decomposing, that things in the past got better and greater?

You say "believe" as if it is a belief. However belief requires faith and Evolutionary science and Abiogenesis doesn't require it. But you'll probably think differently.

I don't understand that question, what are these "things" that are decomposing? Almost everything on Earth has it's own level of decomposition. In the second part of question 3, are you talking about adaptation and mutation? Because not all species in the past got "better and greater"

I dont think I'm understanding it because you phrased it very poorly, but what hell does decomposition have to do with mutation and adaptation?

Response to The Atheist Army 2008-03-18 15:06:24

I agree with Brick-Top. I would add that if you want to question how 'something came from nothing' in the Big Bang, then maybe a good place to look would be, I dunno, a book about the Big Bang. And I would add that none of your proposals make a God anything more than an arbitrary 'fill in the blanks' answer, and definitely no religion-specific God - you're making two great leaps of faith across chasms of non-knowledge.

Response to The Atheist Army 2008-03-18 21:21:40

Y'know, it's funny, but retrospectively, I read 'God is not Great' a few months ago, and boyyyy was I pissed off with religion after reading that book. And internet arguing further compounded it. Like, it's amazing that I was actually pissed off about religion, rather than just opposed to it.

Organised religion is blatantly on a decline now tho. The public atheists totally just have to pick apart the differences between organised religion and spirituality to kill it, I reckon, but I don't think that's gonna happen really.
