Which makes me think about the games again: if we keep with the CRT theme, would games get a computer monitor? That might work as a callback to flash games' influence on the site.
That would be kinda pointless as games can be played on almost any screen. We seem to be leaning towards cartridges as its identifier-- besides some games are played on pocket devices, not CRTs. :)

Well now that you mention the idea of pocket devices I think it'd be cute if the borders were actually themed around that, haha. Like each one is it's own little handheld that you could strap to your keychain. A Newgrounds Pokémon mini sort of thing.

holy smokes i found a folder of all my like 2008 forum signatures that my friends made me i'm gonna use them lol

Love the mockup, a return to the retro skeumorphism style would be VERY cool.

Newgrounds' energy and vibe is what helps separate it from all the modern bs going on now, so anything to lean into that further is a win imo

A Tamagotchi/Tiger Electronics type LED game? A lot of those had rectangular designs that might lend themselves pretty well to the grid format, and they'd definitely fit in with the CD/Vinyl/CRT/Cartridge aesthetic we're brainstorming here. I'll see if I can make a mockup.

I dig the album cover with the disc poking out, but the cartridges take it a little too far

Also really like the new playlist url stuff!

Ooh I don't see the Wednesday update's addition yet but I wanna know when it's workin'! The thought of user-made Collections/Series is really exciting.

Cool, rad, etc. Hey, random thought, could we get separate content rating filters for different media types?

This is one of those things that has been really tempting, although the added complexity might make it too confusing for people (plus the added complexity on our end).

I dunno bout the rest, but I would LOVE those GBA looking game cartridges

Maybe if it's too much, we could simplify the look a bit? Use those fancy flat colors. But yea, I do enjoy myself some skeuomorphism

I actually have no idea what I would do with fillers for different things

I thought about the Tiger Electronics/LCD game concept again, and this is what I have for a mockup of that. (The design under the thumbnail can be customized, I'd guess)

That would be pretty cool too! Plus GBA cartridges have wider real estate on their labels, which fits with how large the thumbnails are.

Alternatively, I was thinking about how the labels are done on Neo Geo cartridges, though that might crowd up the row.

Phase Two launched today, updating the Playlists page to our current layout and introducing ratings filters based on the content of individual playlists.

We’ve changed the formatting of how playlists are presented on pages, where they now include a thumbnail and short description. We also brought back number counts for individual content types on the desktop layout, in addition to showing the ratings range of the content in the list.

You can now create a rich content link to a playlist by pasting the playlist URL on its own line in our text editor, like you can with movies, games, art and audio!

Here are some examples of playlist URLs converting to rich content links:

Wednesday Update: On the playlist edit form, you can now specify a category from a list that includes Album, Collection, Playlist and Series. These categories will be utilized in future updates! If you're releasing a music album on NG, your album will essentially be a playlist categorized as Album.

If you’ve never made a playlist on NG, you can start one by clicking this button on any animation, game, art or audio entry:

Clicking that button will open this box, where you can select from your existing playlists or create a new one:

Music and Game Thumbnail Discussion

In my previous post on Saturday, I asked musicians if they felt it was time to retire the CD iconography for music thumbnails, instead showing their full square thumbnail art. Response was mixed, however a lot of people liked the idea of treating the thumbnail like a sleeve with a CD or vinyl record poking out the side, to keep music unique while showing the full thumbnail. It also came up that games could look like game cartridges and movies could look like film strips.

It’s fun to think about these things but it’s especially helpful when the ideas get visualized, which is what @JamesLee did with this game and music thumbnail mockup!

What do you think of that mockup? It’s a shift back towards a more skeuomorphic design, something that was frowned on this past decade but is maybe primed for a come-back. I enjoyed all the feedback I got on Saturday’s post because it’s a reminder you are out there and reading this, so please don’t hesitate to weigh in on this idea now!

Looks like some neat updates.

Only thing I think is missing for users, is a sort of 'folder/sub-galleries' feature for Art. It would probably suck to implement, especially when the "You might also enjoy..." bit on an image's page displays a user's most recent art submissions, but it'd be quite handy to have sub-galleries dedicated to user-organized collections; at least, more handy than the current "Suggested tags" feature.

^^^^^^^ I love everything about that idea.

Also, I was wondering why my playlists suddenly had thumbnails and what took out the site temporarily yesterday.

Nice to see that not only is it back up swiftly, but the downtime was for a nifty update. ^ ^

(fingers crossed for the Art projects update to be next.)

I think the upcoming playlist updates will address most of that, although an option to pin playlists to your art gallery page might be what you're picturing, like this?

Actually I just checked again and it seems to be loading much faster now, must've just been my internet at the time or the bug was already fixed.
Although, I was wondering if playlists without thumbnail art could default to taking thumbnails from content inside the playlists similar to how other websites tend to do it?
I definitely would enjoy seeing the addition of skeuomorphic borders around submissions in the various portals, as long as it isn't anything too distracting I think it would add a nice touch to the Newgrounds experience. Themes would also be fun too!

Linux Mint 21.1 on Firefox, can confirm it shows up a second after the layout stuff. I thought it was because I'm using a Core 2 Duo P7550, but I now see what's up. (Yeah, I refuse to let this thing die.)
