Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worry and Love The Bomb is a pretty scary film if you have no idea what's happening on screen.
John Carpenter's the Thing is the best horor film ever made.
Actual best one, as in well-made n shit? Probably The Shining or somethin idk. It doesn't rely on preexisting clichés and has a nice story and whatnot. It doesn't rely on shock value either, like the Saw, Human Centipede and Sinister.
I tend to like the psychological horror movies more, they hit harder than those generic ass jumpscare Sinister movies and whatever, although I like to watch those too. I mean I like the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, but they're more funny than scary tbh, so they don't really succeed as horror movies for me.

I kind of dislike the title. Snowboys would have been better. It's otherwise great though.
Here's some more, since there's never one singular best:
-Blair Witch Project (fight me about it)
-Alien
-Housebound
-The Descent
-The Witch
-Carrie
-Silence of the Lambs
-The Fly
-Evil Dead
-Scream
-Jacob's Ladder
-Night of the Living Dead
-The first ~120 minutes of The Mist
Plus Gremlins and Shaun of the Dead if you'd count them.

Yes, Yes & Yes!
The original Jaws was likely the first horror movie I saw, and while its maybe not the GOAT, it holds a special place for me.
Sinister, (I know it ain't the best, but it's one of my favourites.)

I tend to agree. I'm a huge fan of the 1982 movie, not so much of the 2011 "prequel".
I'm also a big fan of Alien, The Shining, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, IT, and one that hardly gets the recognition it deserves, 28 Days Later... by Danny Boyle.
Does Aliens count as Horror? I consider it to be an Action/Horror movie, and I think it's great :)
As others have said, I'd have to go with one of the John Carpenter movies.
Either Halloween or The Thing.
If I had to choose, I guess I'd go with Halloween for two reasons: the music and Donald Pleasence.
Donald Pleasence rulz, everyone else droolz.

John Carpenter's The Thing, hands down. Followed by The Birds, Don't Look Now, and Possession. Also:
Freaks
Hausu
Evil Dead II
Haxan
Alien
Psycho
Night of the Living Dead
King Kong (1933)
Phase IV
Basket Case
Kwaidan
Eraserhead
Tscherkassky's "Outer Space" (if that counts)
It's "Phenomena".
The one where Jennifer Connelly controls bugs and then a heroic monkey murders a woman with a straight razor.
Not exactly horror movies but you should consider checking out those category 3 movies from Hong Kong. They're gory, over the top, and can be downright pornographic at times.
Some of these movies are kind of notorious even in the western world.

I have to say the scariest horror movie I've ever watched is The Conjuring, which I'm sure many people would balk at. The basement scene will haunt me until I die. I wouldn't say it was the best though, because no matter how much I love it when all is said and done it's really just a generic exorcism movie when you get right down to it. Just one that thoroughly got under my skin. I'm still too big of a weenie to give it a second watch. It's my personal favorite horror movie.
I guessed based on what I have seen I would say Aliens is probably the best horror movie. The director's cut in particular. I really want to say Pan's Labyrinth, but that's only a horror movie in the barest of ways. It's really a dark fantasy film with horror elements. But hey, if anyone else thinks it counts as part horror then I'll make that my choice. If not, then Aliens.
Dude, I fucking love The Conjuring. I agree It ain't the best, but it is a good enjoyable horror. I ain't really found anything that's kept me up for a few nights. I thought It would do the trick, but it turns out I like Pennywise.
I made my mate watch The Conjuring. (He don't do horrors, but he lost a bet.) Now he practically shits himself when someone claps.
Now, Pan's Labyrinth is a great movie. It took a while to get round to watch because I have only just started watching subtitled films. Although, I didn't need subs because I speak Spanish. Well, understand it.
Alien is a classic and I adore it. It's a little treasure. That scene where the guy goes down in the vents made me jump out my skin.
Sinister is worth a watch, if you ain't seen it.
I like Jacob's Ladder, but Autopsy of Jane Doe is the only movie that's scared me with something other than cheap jump scares in a while.
