Here were my top picks for the month. And yes, I did play favourites and gave myself some votes!

This is probably the first time that I have had 2 submissions in same monthly voting pool. It feels good to be contributing to the site again :)

Congrats to the winners.

Fleeing the Complex, is a game I would consider GOTY in somewhat in its Genre.

May the power of arts be with us all!

Beacuase I think most voters don't really watch a lot of the nominees. I think in a lot of cases people have only viewed 10 submissions and so those are the ones they necessarily vote for. So naturally the ones that get the most people to click on them will win.

I think the system is broken. I've been running experiments to see if I get selected for monthly voting, and I do every time, even if I've only viewed 5 of the nominees.

It's based on the top cluster of active voters from the previous month so there is no guarantee anyone has watched all or most of the entries - hard to expect people to do that. We'd need to drastically reduce the nominee pool if we wanted to require viewing all of them and then would probably need to require a review as well just to stop people from faking it...

Top cluster of active voters from the previous month, meaning the people who voted on the most submissions? That still seems weird. I didn't vote on a lot of stuff.

Of course I never thought it would be a good idea to make people view every nominee. Here's my idea. Once you've generated the list of nominees, use an algorithm to rank users based on how many of those nominees they've viewed, then allow the users at the top of that list to vote. If you can determine how many nominees a user has viewed, you can even make their votes weigh more based on that number. So a user's vote can count more if they've viewed all the nominees versus twenty or so.

What happens when they still come to a conclusion you disagree with?

Oh, none taken! What I'm trying to get at is that these votes are purely subjective. There is no right or wrong on how the audience votes, because they're being asked who they'd like to win, not how long an entry is, how many colours it contains (things that have some method of actual measurement) etc - so someone will always disagree with or be disappointed by the outcome.

I think it's a mistake to blame how people are chosen to vote, who they voted for, to try and further limit the number of people who can vote, or indeed to think that the people voting aren't somehow qualified to vote, because they voted differently to you.

People will be using different criteria for what they want to see win. Some will vote based on technical merit, others won't know or care how long it took an artist to put together whatever they're voting on, or what's involved in the process - they will be voting purely on what THEY (the viewer) got out of it.

The Clickbait entry was well scripted and well put together and even if people were forced to watch every single entry before casting their first vote, many would STILL rank it at the top of their choices. It was towards the top of my list.

Personally I can't understand why anyone finds David Walliams remotely funny, but there you have it. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm actually more concerned with the Voter of the Month. Every month that passes, I see that the Voter of the Month is a user from around 2003 or prior, which is leading me to believe that it is intentional. Also, can a user win Voter of the Month twice or once they win they are out of the pool?

It isn't intentional, although probably a bad sign that new users aren't engaging as much with voting. We need to make it more exciting for the next generation.

Winning doesn't remove you from the pool.

Thanks for clarifying that TomFulp, I was beginning to lose hope. By the way, do you know the average amount of users that get accepted in the Monthly Voting?

Fleeing the Complex was mega good. I love how PuffBalls is able to squeeze so much entertainment out of such a simple idea. Good on him. He deserved the first prize for games in November.

To clarify, my idea isn't to limit the number of people who can vote. I was thinking the same number of people would be selected, just different people.

Please believe me when I say this isn't about me being disappointed with the winners this time. How could I be? I have no idea which submissions were the best, since I viewed less than 10 of the nominees. And that's the whole point. This is not about me thinking that people who disagree with me are wrong and unqualified. I just think that when the system is potentially picking people to vote who haven't viewed a single nominee, the criteria for picking the voters can be improved upon.

For the first time in years Newgrounds celebrates Santmas instead of winter. And true, seeming like the 90s or something. :)

If that were to happen, I might be inclined to just get up and leave as the submissions play without me & then come back when they're all done and cast the vote I was gonna cast before being forced to sit through a mountain of movies & games I don't care about.
