If it's from North Korea then it's not anime, now is it?

Anime is just short for animation. The fact that people mean Japanese animation when they say it is just an overall misconception. :/

I actually thought the art and animation was pretty delightful... hmm...

Do not refer to it as anime because anime is exclusively japanese.

That's what North-Korean animation is called according to Wikipedia at least. Never heard of the name before. It might just be a translation of 'North-Korean animation' though, in which case it doesn't really differ from the anime abbreviation after all. Manga is definitely unique though...

Except done much better. Western animators don't suffer the curse of SAMEFACE that all Japanese anime do.

The budget for Western animation is probably much higher, thus quality. If you've watched Samurai Champloo, Akira, Ghost in a Shell or FLCL though, maybe you'd think differently though. Anime movies in particular have some of the best animation I've ever seen, much better than the Marvel counterparts IMO.

Ah, I kinda liked the randomness in that, though I mentioned it as an example mostly because of the animation quality, which sets a higher standard for smoothness than most similarly plotted series. It's very smooth and expressive, if you noticed? Randomness is one thing the Japanese are really good at btw, series like Excel Saga and 2x2= Shinobuden are a couple of crazy examples. In a good way. But maybe that style of comedy isn't for anyone.

I will say though, that Studio Ghibli is an exception, even though they're pretty much just a Japanese Disney.

They do make some great movies, though as you say they're a bit Westernized in style. :)

The best thing about Japanese animation is probably the variety. There are series about virtually everything, from golf to bar-tending to... well, everything, apart from the regular plots. There are even more genres of mangas (comics), and only a fortunate few are actually made to anime, most with low-budget. They use a lot of tricks to cut down on workload when making animated versions of the comics, a lot of looping, still faces (as you mention), backgrounds that repeat themselves, etc.

If you like fighting and martial arts, though, it's a treasure-cove. Air Master, Samurai Champloo and Historys Strongest Disciple Kenichi are a few favorites. But if you're looking for a mix of quality/plot then Ghost in the Shell (the movie) is a masterpiece. It's considered one of the most detailed Anime's created. Good plot too.

He should just watch Cowboy Bebop. That show is a great gateway to anime.

Yeah so is TMoHS too, there are a lot....I also recommend Hanasuku Iroha because it is so lighthearted

I dunno about TMoHS, it just doesn't help the misconception that all anime is about schoolgirls at a school doing stuff.
I personally couldn't get into it myself, but that's just me.

It was just so unique though, beside the schoolgirls and stuff, the plot was awesome. I thought the misconception was that all anime has overpowered MCs?

Maybe I should it another chance...

The beginning is kind of dull except for the first ten minutes, then after like 2-3 eps I just got sucked into this world of Espers and Time Travelers (Excuse my cheesiness) So fulfilling yet so empty. Good anime, my favorite ever actually.

I agree, and I also agree that Bebop is a good initiation, plus it's just great in general.

Bebop and Champloo are definitely good starts, along with GITS, Darker Than Black, and the Ghibli stuff.

To go for something that would probably be unexpected for those who don't know about anime, though, these are some I'd pick.

Tekkon Kinkreet

Kemonozume

Mind Game

Mononoke

Tokyo Godfathers

Hundred Stories

Mushishi

Short films get overlooked.

Cat Soup

Neo Tokyo

Memories

Genius Party

Genius Party Beyond
