This has been big news here in the UK as it was also revealed that a number of supermarkets have been selling burgers with as much as 25% horsemeat from this same supplier (unknowingly of course).
Obviously there is a concern that in a country where we do not eat horse meat this is happening, and begs the question what other meat is getting into these products.
But on the whole I don't see the big deal about eating horse so long as it is labelled as such. Lots of countries do eat horse, and I'm sure it isn't the worst meat in the world.

Really? I think it was as much as about 12%, and there was as high as 25% porcine meat.

You're probably right, I'd only glanced at a few articles as frankly I'm not that bothered by it. I no doubt saw the 25 and assumed that was relating to the horse meat. 12% is still a huge amount of something that isn't supposed to be in there at all though!

I've heard of people eating cats and dogs in other countries, but I've never heard of people eating horses. The only time I even heard of that being done deliberatedly is when people ate a horse who were starving. Maybe they have decided that when a horse is used for glue they should simply do something for the rest of it?

It's big in Europe and Japan.
In fact, when american horses got old, we used to ship them to countries like Italy for use in food...but OBama outlawed that practice. Not sure why.
