New Year, not a lot of time, I'm working on getting back to it though.

Also here's a flier I made for a Friday the 13th party in January

Glad you're still bumpin' :). "Main Street" blows my mind. I had no idea you ran a thread. Your confidence and skill are in equal supply -- and no, I'm not sucking up, LOL.

Talk to us about "Main Street". Do you have any wrists left? I can guess at how the others went, but that one... I caught that one and hit fav instantly - initially out of awe, then concern over stress, and then a variety of other feels =D. What's your timeline for something like this (ish)? How often do you pull this type of thing into (edit:) full digital? Terribly curious.

Thanks, yeah lately I don't post too much in it, not a lot of time to document WIPs, and then when I finish after posting to the Portal, Twitter, Instagram, etc I just forget to bump the thread. I keep meaning to do smaller things to add in here, but time is never on my side it seems.

It's all traditional, just a crowquil pen and inkwell, sometimes I'll use fineliners for these, and then a quarter of the way through regret using fineliners - ergonomics and cost are less than ideal.

I've been doing drawings like that for around a decade now, so I'm pretty comfortable drawing them, I don't really draw from the wrist, elbows and shoulder motions for most of the drawing - so wrist is fine. If your method of drawing involves a lot of fine wrist motions, adjust your technique, because that is going to cause damage over years of work.

I don't know how long mainstreet took total, but it was done over the course of about a week in short bursts when I had time to. If I had to guess maybe in the 6 - 8 hour range total. It's all very from the head and not super rigid in anything I was trying to accomplish so those go a lot faster than if I'd had a more concrete vision I wanted to accomplish.

Hard to say how often I do them, but it's probably a few a year, one every other month or so, depending on how we're classifying them.

Here's all of them I was able to find in my gallery going back about ten years (in no particular order)

Some of those like Milkweed and The Lantern are honorable mentions, done on 9" x !12" paper, but they fill the area with a lot of detail so I count them, also they're both Micron pieces.

Incredible. Looking a bit closer, I can reason about your detailing strats a bit better with all of those examples! It's far more appealing than crosshatching everything, to my eye. Also, had to look up what Micron even was, haha. Awesome across the board! Thanks for the time reveal as well - 6-8 hours strikes me as a reasonable goal I/others could shoot for & benefit from. Not quite a speed paint, but not a life-long project either.

This. It's too late for me, but everyone else who stumbles on this thread needs to read the above. Tendinitis / carpal from 20 years of code + physical work = why line drawing is largely a bust for me (also, a bad eye). I can't draw from the shoulders, elbow, or wrist -- they all lock in place and fire audibly like shotguns. Hence Photoshop / etc helpers.

There's really no turning back from that sort of damage. Younger peeps think they can just tough it out, but nope! They need to take your good example + my bad example, compare the two, and take ergonomics seriously. I can easily see how artists would wind up in my position. Don't be me :). Be Jack instead :).

Thanks for taking the time to write!

Has been crazy looking through this thread from P1, really sick that you’re still bumping it 14 years on.

Thanks, dropping in, yeah I mean you know I try to keep it updated, but not a lot of wips.

ALTHOUGH today I do have a biblical angel that was for a project, the commissioner said it was the wrong angel and to just throw Lucifer in instead. If I have time I'll render this guy out a bit. iu_923727_2960153.webp

Awesome, that’s interesting because that’s what jumps to mind when I think “biblically accurate angel” too. I’m guessing they wanted the seraphim style angel but the more eyes the better IMO

That is what I googled for the references, They wanted a human with wingalings.

Anyway here's a quick one, because, fuck man.

That right there with all the eyes I think is a Throne, Seraphims have one big old eye and a pair of wings, and what your client was after was a Cherubim if random YouTube videos have served me well. Funny if your client only knew about cherub angels so far and you just showed him how fucked up they’re actually supposed to look.

They knew what they wanted, but didn't communicate it to me, I think they assumed I was really into this sort of stuff and knew the distinctions. I am not and did not lol.

Anyway, here's a WIP of a thing that I meant to draw yesterday.

In an effort to get some actual art threads up on the forum board.

I’ve been chipping away at a phat commission for a while, so I haven’t been able to get much personal art in.

But here’s a WIP on an old drumhead

iu_1069083_2960153.png

and a WIP of a portion of The Moon Card shot off my screen because I can’t be bothered to export a PNG.

I felt like doing something a bit different from my normal more organic shapes.

Also I need to replace a lot of markers, goddamn.

Original scribble, I still like the shape of the tail more here than in the final. But the format and size of the paper didn't allow it to bow out as much.

Completed the Horns Series

The Art Portal update made it so you can't have multiple submissions with the same title, so I'm kind of bummed they can't all just be Horns like the first three. Oh well.

iu_1192266_2960153.webp

Also got some other work in

No plan, and I kind of lost the perspective at one point, so it's a bit of a mess -- well a bit more of a mess.

My friend found a possum and another friend had two sets of gray Copics that they were never going to use so they gave them to me - so I drew a possum with copics (and some prismacolors for the colored bits).

I just needed to do something quick.

I meant to update this thread yesterday before I finished the ink one and took this photo, so here's a partially inked eyeball thing, with another future drawing.

I’m finally getting around to drawing something I’ve been meaning to draw for like a decade or so. It’s not original, but I think it is neat.

Also I drew the PAC just a bit too far to the left but had done all the details so I had to do the analog version of the nudge tool and bust out the tracing paper. I don’t have to do this too often luckily, but having the little bits of tracing paper around with linework is one of those little process things that are fun about traditional art. And I can just slap this guy into anything in the future iu_1195026_2960153.png
