lmao

Newbies, listen up!!

Creature of the Week (COW) is a forum activity that was popular a few years ago, but stopped, and now I'm reviving it. The idea is that each Monday a theme for a creature is given, and you must draw that creature until the end of Sunday. The next Monday a new COW and a voting thread for the previous COW starts. There is no prize for the winner (except for bragging rights, obviously), but COW is a fun activity to take part in, and you're sure to improve your drawing skills if you participate each week :)

This weeks theme: Snow Creator

Pretty self explanatory. This creature's body somehow creates what we call snow.

Deadline: Sunday, 15th of March

THE RULES (follow these or I'll be sad :( )
-Only one entry per user.
-You cannot post old work. All pieces must be created specifically for COW.
-No human likeness.
-You cannot post a picture of an existing animal, or a combination of existing animals (in other words, no lion monkeys or zebra flies).
-A description for your creature is recommended, but not necessary.
-No MS Paint
- All other Art Forum rules apply.

Have fun! Don't be shy to post WIPs and ask for critiques. We're all here to learn, after all :)

Also, be sure PM me ideas for new themes.

Well, I immediately got to it, so here is the first WIP of my Snow Creator,
Having no other means of defence it shoots a fine vapour out of the nine holes on it's back when in danger. In the cold atmosphere it lives in, the vapour almost immediately deposits and turns to snow, granting the snow creator a means of escape.

I left the skeleton/frame in in this picture. I never used such an elaborate frame for a drawing before, so tell me what you think of it.
Also, is it perhaps too much like an Elephant?

Pretty cool. I like the concept, but yeah, it is a bit similar to an elephant. Perhaps make him generally slimmer? That would kinda makes sense seeing as he uses the snow as a diversion to get away.

Right now I'm messing around with the idea of a creature that shoots its eggs (that we think is snow) into the sky, so that they'd spread out and get to safe places where they can develop (kinda got this idea from how some plants spread out).

I know it's not technically snow, but I think it works with the theme as long as we think it's snow (I did say "what we call snow" in the first post).

I think the rule about no animal combos is dumb and needlessly restrictive. All the creatures I draw are combos of various real animals. All this rule does is make it harder for people to participate in an otherwise fun activity.

Sorry, but I'm not changing that one. I think it adds to the challenge and gets the creative juices flowing, which develops more interesting results. If everyone made stuff like this, it would really ruin the activity.

The Ice Parasite, a creature produces massive quantities of ice from its back, creating storms that it utilises to protect itself from harm.

How is it relevant to the theme? Read the opening post, don't just post some random drawing.

Maybe the creature shoots ice from its eyes while cowering in the darkness of the trees!
Or spits stalactites. Or, shit, something like that.

My monster inhabits hollow trees, the ice created by its body slowly rotting it from the inside. When the tree dies, it moves to a new one.

Its weak mandibles can't chew very well, so it uses its sharp teeth to peel off the soft rotting wood on the inside, and that is what it feeds on.

Taking in moisture through its many elongated scales

Yeah, can't really do that. It got erased as soon as I left the room. I took a screenshot of it with an outside program. A really cruddy outside program, I might add.

That's kinda cool. Reminds me of those Chinese dragons. I'd work on the background and would refine the shadows a bit, though.

Too bad. Just work on it a bit more next time, ok? :)

I'm not trying to offend you or anything, I just don't want people to submit half-assed stuff. I actually quite like the idea behind yours.

Art Rage 2 (I really like this one)
GIMP
Paint.NET (not too fond of this)

All free programs, all better than Paint.

Drawing made in MS Paint are usually really shitty.

Hehe, that's a nifty idea. Just don't make it too human like :)

========

I think I'm done with mine.

The Snow Lizard.

The Snow Lizard is an animal that lives in low temperatures, and shoots it s eggs into the sky so that their young could spread and develop in places hard to reach by predators. These eggs are often times considered snow, since they look and act similarly to snow.

The Snow Lizard has four phases of development.

Phase One: The eggs that are often thought to be snow. The eggs are tossed around in the wind, and most of them end up in hard to reach places like treetops.

Phase Two: The Youngling. In this phase the lizard grows and uses the resources that were given to it by its parent. The youngling barely moves, and sleeps most of the time, letting its body develop.

Phase Three: The Lizard. In this phase, The Snow Lizard is fast, agile and active. The females feed, so that they could have strong and healthy babies, and the males actively look for mates. The males usually die soon after mating.

Phase Four (female exclusive): The Parent. In this phase, the Snow Lizard is overweight, impregnated and dying. The Snow Lizard usually dies in the process of releasing their eggs into the sky, giving all their stored resources to their babies.

I love the idea of the little critter. You've got it perfectly developed. The art is also very very nifty, with clear and smooth coloring helping a lot.
AAAAND I was gonna say: The only downside I see in this illustration is the fact that you left the sketches behind the actual artwork and it makes it kinda messy. No so much that ruins the piece (of course not), but it's just me nitpicking, I guess.
But you've already fixed that so...

Great job, man. Great job!
