I'm not sure if this was his reasoning specifically, but he wanted to be a god.

After he slew the Chimera, he tried to fly to Olympus to sit with the Gods, and Zues was enraged by some low human thinking he was as mighty as the gods, so he threw a thunderbolt at him :D and Pegasus bucked him and flew away.

That's how Bellerophon's life ended (Zeus sent a hornet that stung pegasus) but it's some time after he defeated Chimaera. It is not directly related. so I'm looking for a reason previous.
What was Bellerophon's goal and who sent him and what did that guy try to archieve?
