please take care of this star

Author Comments

Hey everyone, this is my 200th audio submission to Newgrounds.

When I first started producing nine years ago, I never imagined that I'd do anything like this. I mean, I did believe it possible, but right now, I can't even contain my excitement over how I've actually pulled it off. ...What an emotional roller-coaster this one has been.

This is a song ostensibly about a girl receiving a star from her Maker... right?

All vocals sung by your truly, as usual.

The piece was done in 8 days, beginning on Tuesday the 11th at 06:30 BST. I put myself through NGADM / NGUAC conditions, stipulating a deadline of two weeks from the start date.

Full post about the song and its process and its context here.

CW: child abuse.

With special thanks to Led By Donkeys, who inspired this work in part.

Did you know that the queen of our universe

has a crown of twelve stars upon her head,

and that her ways are gentleness and love,

the kind that only a mother

could give her child?

Seeing her golden crown, We have made these stars;

We have made them hover in the deep blue sky.

There are twelve in number, all in all,

and we're giving each star away

to a very special child.

You will share this star with your friends all around you;

you will show them light, help them all to dream;

you will keep its light deep within your heart.

Now I give this to you, dearest daughter of Mine!

Please take care of this star;

it shines so bright,

it's just the way you are!

Let it hover above you

as you bask in its light;

let it lead you,

let it guide you, oh—!

Please take care of this star;

it shines so bright,

it's just the way you are!

Let it banish the darkness

and keep you safe at night,

let it bring forth your happiest dreams!

Still I hear your words in the midst of the strife

hidden just behind the front door of my home.

I have kept it close to my heart

for very many years, but now

it must return to you:

I've been beaten up badly for keeping this star;

(I can hear the thundering of your battered skin!)

I've been pleading with those who want to tear it all apart;

(I can see the tears of blood it shed at night!)

No one sees the tears rushing down my cheeks at night-time,

(And I can see the words that form within your heart)

when I go to sleep alone!

(that silently rise to Me!)

I have shared this star with my friends all around me;

I have shown them hope, I have cherished the light,

but now I risk my all to see it shining right beside me,

so I send this to you, dearest Father, oh please—!

Please take care of this star;

it shines so bright,

it's just the way you are!

Take it gently in your hands

as it flies across the waters

to be with you,

to embrace you, oh—!

Please take care of this star;

it shines so bright,

it's just the way you are!

One day I'll fight my way

to get it back within my hands—!

And it'll shine

into the night

as it brings forth my happiest dreams!

(Commend to My hands your happiest dreams!)

Your song gives a feeling of serenity and liberation. I love the interlude starting at 2:55, its magical! It gives me vibes of silent winter nights, where something fantastic is brewing. Your voice has a good range, and you lead the rest of the song very well with it. It shows that you've put a lot of effort into this.

I particularly like the resonance of the part where you say ''hidden just behind the front door of my home''. It rings true.

Well made!
And congrats for you 200th song!
