City Ruins [AShattered Past] WIP

After I got dropped from the NGADM making music wasn't simple and my interest was really off for it. I didn't really know what to make or post on here anymore. It was only a few days after that a friend asked for my help on a video game project that he and his girlfriend had the thought of making. He knew that I was the only one that could be a possible candidate for the development of their title since I have an editing PC for the job. He dropped down some ideas and wanted me to start working as soon as I can with no date to finish. The game has no title for it and so much is still in the works, like this soundtrack sample. The key here is cinematic music to keep the game going. The inspiration came from listening to the Neir: Automata OST album( which btw is an amazing game). This is only the second time I've worked with such a genre and it get's a bit tricky for me since my usual work is near the EDM genre. Somehow this came out well enough for a post. The song is still a work in progress but hopefully I get to finish up on it. Any criticism is appreciated and let me know what you think to help make this game possible.

I like it!

So, although I am unfamiliar with the inner workings of music meant for cinematic setpieces and such, I'll try to do a think and give criticism (which should be taken with a grain of salt). If the main goal of this piece is to progress and give weight to a certain sequence then I have to say it wholeheartedly succeeds in that regard. You can really imagine this used while presenting wide shots of a decaying, desolate cityscape/wasteland. The dissonance which begins at 1:10 also gives the piece a sinister character, and could be used to introduce certain elements which subtly imply a cause or reason behind the evil that made what was visually presented.

The percussion that enters around 1:29 or so is wonderful for a smidge of tension a scene could use to progress and it adds a whole lot of weight. However I can't give you all my 5 since as you've said, this is a WIP, so I assume there is room for improvement. Maybe a cello squeezin out some sad notes round the parts before the sinister dissonance and chords? IDK really, jus' throwing out ideas that might stick, in the end it's your piece so you do the thing.

Teckmo-X responds:

Thanks for the review. Good to get some positive feedback with a good amount of detailing. You've captured my intentions almost perfectly. The soundtrack is supposed to have a similar sinister concept but as you mentioned wasteland themed. The song was originally supposed to be put into a video game I am working on with some friends and colleagues and it is still being worked on at a slower pace. Usually I'm not the type to make music like this but it was somewhat something completely new to me and it worked out well. My inspiration came from Neir Automatas OST Album with that sort of composition my goal was similar to that. I understand the percussion at 1:29 and so forth but my intention wasn't to make a drop or to reach a climax, it was just supposed to be simple and easy to listen to. I think I might have over done it a little with percussions but as I have mentioned the song along with the game is still in the works and won't be complete for at least another 4 years. It is being optimized for PC on a monthly bases so hopefully we get the game out for everyone to try out or at least a demo. The review is great and I appreciate it. I hope to release a full version of this or maybe something else since we don't want to spoil too much of this

Real best work ! You not missed but this song put on target , i feel this citys ruins ::::)

Teckmo-X responds:

Thank you! I'm actually proud of this one because I've never really made cinematic music before and it's still a process till this day.

pretty nice.

I like the ambient atmosphere, this feels to me like your moving through a densely foggy area with city ruins appearing out of the fog.

I feel like this could use a little more pad orchestration to make it feel more full, currently it feels fairly empty.

The drums that come in about halfway are pretty nice for the atmosphere. you could expand it further and add in subtle cymbals and hi hats. Combine this with a strong pad and you will have a nice sound.

You have managed to achieve both an ambient and unsettling song, which is interesting. Regardless, I still enjoyed it despite it being a WIP.

Teckmo-X responds:

I see what you mean but this is just a sample for my friends Unreal Engine project. Hopefully I can put more work into it and release more new work of my own. I've been off newgrounds a while so let's just see where things go.

Well this song sounds secretly and dark, i imagine more underground like basements, dungeons.
Great work !

In my feelings after half of song you can try amplify (strenghten) the sound as the increasing tension. Surely its my opinion and i dont know you gonna like it :D

Teckmo-X responds:

I've been working on it so don't know how I'm gonna end it up with.
