Hey folks, Trois writing. This is a NGADM 2023 Group Stage entry.

I finished the initial structure, chords, melody, and lyrics of this at 1:53 a.m. BST on 30 July (while it was still the 29th EDT, within the first hour since the results were announced; yes, I wrote our entry that quickly). I imagined it as a song sung in the middle of the night, while contemplating overcoming social anxiety. My mind imagined a video of an informal musical conversation that took place in only two rooms, covering the night-time musings of us both as we looked out the window and into the stars, while contemplating our internal prisons.

I enclose the art I drew on 16 August that conveys this as best as I can.

When he had more energy, Christoph sent it back to me as a condensed guitar structure, a welcome departure in feel from what I'd written -- the initial structure was a morose, sad piece written in 54 BPM; this one was much more hopeful and had a chipper 72.5 BPM, with a to be continued cue at the end that left us both with wonderful feelings in our stomachs.

The rest of the time was spent recording, talking about the emotions and motivations behind this piece, mixing and mastering. Red Hot Chilli Peppers was a huge, huge influence on the mix of this song. I promised I would help elevate Christoph's voice, as he's previously expressed a lack of confidence with his singing voice. I wrote this song because I believe in him and what he can do. I was happy to harmonise with him. Like with MÉTÉORE, this was a song that kept on giving, taking on a life of its own as it gave us new ideas of what to add.

As the lyricist, I gave him all the feelings of my heart in this song based on things he'd previously expressed to me and our friends about social anxiety, about singing, about many things. I wrote the words like there was absolutely nothing left to lose. I cried hard writing the words. All airs of composure have long since gone.

LYRICS

I don't want to be in a prison of my own making,

I don't want to live here while the future is mine for the taking;

these doors are heavy and they won't give way;

what can I do before it only slips away?

The window of this cell opens to a sky of stars;

they shimmer and shine,

oh how beautiful they are!

I want to take my place among those lights.

With you in my heart,

I'll dream my little dream tonight.

CHORUS 1

'Cause I can't hide and be afraid no more;

in every heart that loves me,

there's an open door;

I can't hide now,

I can't run away,

I'll break down these walls and let in the light of day.

And sometimes my heart shall fall,

my will shall falter,

but every thought is a raindrop upon the water;

these things shall pass and I shall be on my way,

these doors shall dissolve,

these walls shall only fade to grey.

CHORUS 2

No, I won't hide and be afraid no more,

'cause with you by my side,

I've broken down the door;

no, I will take my place among the glorious stars,

and there you'll be with me,

the wonders that you are.

i really cant overstate how beautiful and powerful this track is. the guitar solo in the second half is near enough to get me teary eyed. incredible work

I like the smooth guitar at the beginning and the melancholy vocals shortly thereafter. The vocal layering is really nice harmonically, but they don’t always blend together well in the mix. The way the vocal lines are articulated is just slightly different sometimes between the lead vocals and harmonies, if that makes sense. The lyrics themselves are really vivid and evocative. The piece also has a great overarching sense of build-up, between the addition of the strong beat at 1:33 and the guitar solo at 2:24. The production quality is fantastic, and the phrasing and arrangement feel really loose and organic, like you’re both communicating these feelings to me by talking to me rather than through music. Overall, this is a very strong piece, you two! Keep it up. ^_^

While I may not necessarily be in love with the intro to first bit of verse in terms of performance (I feel they could have been a bit more confident is all!) as soon as all comes together with the two of you singing proud, song is gold!

There are a few issues where on multiple takes I can hear dead mic noise. Noise reduction in RX7 or another softwhere which will allow you to learn deadnoise pattern and intelligently remove it from the signal will usually do the trick without damaging the takes as EQ or multiband might. I experimented with my own airconditioner ruined takes, and 2 passes did it, learning the silent portions between for each. The worry prone such as myself will do well to save a copy prior and save over the file with the noiseless version thereafter.

I actually think the balance toward Trois' choral portions could be a bit more open. At present she is hiding in the mix on the bigger vocal sections, when I would really love to hear that free, breathy quality there hiding in the mix. Potentially bring Chris and the guitars down just a tad to make room for her? Hmm..

Beyond that on larger sections the dead noise does come into play where there are multiple takes and cuts, but again you are working with TONS of them in the project so this is understandable. You're doing an older chorus method, overdubs and so on, so there is going to be lots of noise, and it's hard to be rid of all of it!

In terms of instrumentation, composition, and lyrics, and all elements brought to the fore save what I have already mentioned, you two have brought to the table something so, so special. Working absolute magic over there across the pond. Fantastic work, and as always, lovely to hear from you <3

Absolutely magnificent, the highlight of NGADM for me. If I could give higher than a 10 I would. Seriously. The delivery, the emotion behind the guitar solo at the end, just everything culminated into something absolutely beautiful. You two should be proud of yourselves for making something so incredible.

DisOmikron responds:

Thank you so much! I wanted the final guitar solo to be special and feel like it's close to the vocal melody at first but then completely breaking free and doing its own thing! =D

Great work! You always manage to surprise me with a different genre, but this one feels especially different. I think the brighter tempo feels good here…it creates a bit of tension between the lyrics. It would be interesting to hear a version at the original tempo just to see how much that affects interpretation.
Lovely as always!

Troisnyx responds:

Thank you so much!

I do still have the original draft; I'll ask Christoph and see if he's okay with me putting up a link.
